Action Weeks- Day 4

Today was a break from the norm as we embraced our inner artists! With our project focusing on an art center and us being Team Open Canvas, it seemed fitting to have an artsy day.

We brought out all sorts of supplies—paints, brushes, canvases—and let our creativity flow. The result? Some seriously amazing pieces that capture the vibe of the site, the gallery, and our collective ideas.

From bold splashes of color to intricate details, each artwork told a story and gave a glimpse into what our art center could be. It was a day of inspiration, collaboration, and lots of laughs.

Day 4:

Today's activities kicked off with further refinement of each massing iteration developed on day 3. In the morning we started reviewing the 3 different options created, and worked on developing these with considerations such as access points, refuse disposal areas and fire strategies.

Using simple tools, we started to arrange each living unit on a site plan, to best test each possible arrangement to maximise the site's potential. The day ended with two strong proposals, with each design beginning to be fleshed out with exterior sketches and floor plans.

Day 3:

Building off our site analysis, each group on Day 3 began developing their design proposals for the site. We began testing the spatial arrangements for each 'accommodation unit', learning about the spacial requirements needed and thinking about what amenities are required to help the homeless live independently and start getting back on their feet.

Students then began creating 'site strategy plans' to further develop their designs, coming up with basic massing forms, and establishing the relationships between the accommodation units and the other elements of the site - testing and defining the boundary between private and public.

Day 3
Interaction with students from Bradford University. The group learned their views, current problems, and the loss of connection to the city centre. The site is perfectly poised between the Bradford University campus on one end and two iconic entertainment venues on the other, favouring it with significant potential redevelopment opportunities.
It was important for each student to understand this and analyse it for their specific section of the street facade.
Followed by a tour of the City Town Hall, City centre public spaces and the famous Alhambra Theatre. We also had the opportunity to visit the refurbishment works of Bradford Live, which is currently under construction.
Afternoon 4:30:
To wrap up the day, we had a quick summary. Students had to take away what they had learned about the history, culture, students, and our site, Great Horton Road—directions for the work to be done next as we left for Manchester.

Day 3
It was a beautiful day to visit our site in Bradford
We have two groups working at two different sites in Bradford, the (Heritage Action Zone) and (Great Horton Road Reimagined) travelling together for the site visit.

Here's a brief overview of how our day unfolded...
Morning 8:20
Early start. Bus from MTC to Bradford site.
Our collaborator Jade (Bradford City Council Culture Department) welcomed us at the Alhambra Theatre, followed by a presentation and overview of the Bradford City of Culture 2025 presentation.
A representative from the culture department provided us with information regarding the history and purpose of the buildings on the street.
Later, students walk along the stretch of our site on Great Horton Road, taking notes, photographs, sketches, observations, and discussions on existing built facades, vacant spaces, street use, and possible interventions…

Day 4 - Analysis of the Internal Space

On the fourth day of their active week, the students engaged in a focused effort to adapt the internal spaces of the old library. The interior space was carefully divided into three distinct areas, each identified for improvement based on feedback from one of the collaborators involved in the project.
To express their ideas and opinions effectively, the students utilized sketches and zoning techniques. Through these visual aids, they were able to articulate their vision for transforming the interior spaces of the library.

Action Week: Day 4

Today, we took another step towards the future of the Hulme Hippodrome. BA students, along with M.Arch and MA AR leaders, came together to brainstorm and discuss ideas for the new facade design of the Hippodrome. While there were many great ideas, and designs that considered the significance the Hulme Hippodrome held for the local residents in the past, the building's features and its relationship with the surrounding urban context resonated with everyone. The new facade will feature a grid-shaped frame with various plants growing, and the newly installed screens will showcase films, event videos, and more. The plants visible on the new facade will complement the adjacent garden center, and together with the garden center, Hulme Hippodrome will play its new role well, especially during events for the residents.

Action week: Day 4!

Hello, here is Keming. This is a blog of Friday.

I'm happy to say that we're making very good progress. Because of the good arrangement in the past few days, we are carrying out our respective tasks in an orderly manner.

Today, we will design in two separate batches. Part of the design was completed yesterday, so the completed cad will be taken to the B15 for cutting today.

The rest of the students went on with their mission. We all put this project on the top of our list, so we all take it seriously.

Day 4 - Portfolio advice

After lunch, we looked at some of the BA2 portfolios and projects and offered advice and software support for their upcoming submission. Overall, we were very impressed by the standards of the BA2 students portfolios! Some of the areas that the BA2 wanted particular help with concerned 3D modelling and also their visual renders, so we offered some advice on how to model more organic shapes on Revit and how to elevate existing renders using Photoshop.

Day 04: Banding Together

Today, students from both teams began to comprise their designs together to formalise conclusions as we move into next week where the teams will aim to realise their intentions beyond their sketch concepts.

In addition to this, students were offered the opportunity to further their own designs outside of MSA Live, allowing for the MArch1 students to cast their input and sharpen any skills on show. Not only does this allow for the betterment of the BA Students' output, but also tailors these skills for an intensive (and fun!!) design week coming up in MSA Live.

This morning, we dove into our first meeting with the client! Our day started with a Teams meeting, linking up with the developer working on the High Street Regeneration project in Stockport. BA Members of our MSA Live team took turns presenting our temporary and permanent designs. Thankfully, both presentations hit the mark and we earned valuable feedback from the client on key areas like management, security, ownership, storage, and vandalism prevention.

Post-presentation, we huddled to mull over the feedback, brainstorming ways to adapt our designs. These tweaks will set us up for success as we dive into the technical design phase, leading up to our booklet presentation next week. It's all hands on deck as we refine our vision for an in-between space of Stockport's revitalised High Street!

Day 3 - 3D model progress

This is the progress of the 3D model of the existing Youth Zone by the end of day 3! The team also began exploring what to change in the interior in preparation for tomorrow's meeting with the architects.

Some of the initial ideas for the interior improvements include moving the storage room in the art zone to the north to maximise the amount of natural light in the space along. They also played around with eliminating the balcony space as it is unusable and unsafe for kids and extending the room footprint into the balcony instead. Additionally, a potential break of the curved wall and insertion of glass panels might create visual connectivity between the art room and central area of circulation.

Action Weeks - Day 3

Day three took our project to the next level as we zoomed into the finer details. We printed out the big plans and got into the nitty-gritty details of our project. Everyone split into three groups, each focusing on a different part: the entrance, the elevation, and the reception area.

With plans spread out everywhere, we started tracing and sketching directly on them. The challenge? To tweak and improve our designs without straying too far from the original blueprints. It's all about making those small, smart changes that add up to a big difference.

Stay tuned to see how our ideas evolve as we keep pushing our designs further!

-Day 2 & Day 3-

A busy few days in uni this week for Group 4! Our undergrad students have been working hard in developing initial concepts for the thermal sauna and surrounding site - the tracing paper and markers have been out and we're seeing some great collaboration between the students.

A slight change of plan to our action week, instead of community outreach on Wednesday, we have moved to displaying the students' work on the site on Friday for a pre-planned event due to low footfall in the site. Looking forward to seeing everyone's presentation boards and hearing people's feedback -- hopefully this will be good guidance for next week.

Action week: Day 3!

Hello, this is a blog of Thursday.

I am happy to say that we are on the right way to reach our goal. After introducing our project, '' Kingdom Life Church'' and our proposal of our design, we had divided all the students into two group. One is supposed to design the church while another is reusing the Youth Centre.

We focused on the hand-drawn drafts first. Try every possibility through the efforts of everyone. We don't impose our ideas on undergraduates, we guide them to design. After the efforts of these few days, we can get the size of the interior layout after the design today.

Chris's presence here today has also given us a lot of encouragement and help. He talked to every student and gave his opinion.

We are going to make a physical model tomorrow.

Day 2

Morning: This morning, everybody had some independent time to do some research in order to develop ideas for their plots on Great Horton Road. People had been getting busy looking at the site's history, analysing their specific section of the street façade, and coming up with some great ideas.

Afternoon: After lunch, we began with a quick overview of the project objectives we had developed previously, then an example of a physical model to inspire our own modelling of the street. We moved on to some, informal presentations of ideas and analysis - discussing any ideas collectively and providing peer feedback on the work. Up next visit to Bradford site!

3rd May

Fraser has been arranging the details of our site visit on Thurs 9th with our collaborator, and it become clear that extra assistance from the council would help our team understand what is already happening in Bradford.

Fraser spoke informally over the phone with the Landscape Architect and Team Leader for Landscape, Design and Conservation at Bradford Council, Dr Saira Ali, about other projects such as the Darley Street Market and the Bradford City Village scheme. We agreed to expand on this discussion on Thurs 9th but this provided a much needed overview of what the students needed to be aware of before visiting the site.

We discussed the following schemes:
• Transforming Cities Fund
• Heritage Action Zone
• Townscape Heritage Scheme
• City Village residential scheme
• The new Darley Street Market

We will produce Serial Visions, Masterplans and Axonometric of our interventions.

This is assembled into a publication, with descriptive text, which will match the style and typeface of our poster.

Breaking down, in detail, our aspirations for each day. Week 1 will include research and preparation as younger students familiarise themselves with Bradford, its heritage, and various plans to improve its built environment.

Later in Week 1 we will visit the site, giving students the opportunity to reflect on Bradford and choose specific buildings, sites and streets, taking notes and making sketches.

March (multiple days)

As a team we produced a poster to represent our project and conveyed our key aims and approach, as well as letting the younger BA students know which skills are to be expected to be used or taught by us.

Wednesday 21st February

While our project site is distanced from Bradford university itself, we are eager to consider young people’s usage of the city in our scheme. Bradford is the youngest city in the country, so addressing this demographic is key.

Wednesday 21st February

We attended a presentation on Bradford City of Culture 2025. The fourth city to win this opportunity, Bradford will host 12 months of festivities celebrating art, culture and its own sense of place.

We will situate our own interventions within this – attempting to add to and enhance multiple placemaking and improving schemes.

We also discussed other overlapping projects, such as the Townscape Heritage Scheme (coming to an end) and the Heritage Action Zone, which we will unpack more when we visit the site with our BA students.
