Hello, I'm Quan Wei, originally from Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

I completed my undergraduate studies at MSA. Before my master's degree journey, I spent a year as part 1 architecture assistant at RDC Arkitek in Johor. I am a member of & atelier now!

Beyond architecture, I enjoy immersing myself in computer games, traveling to new destinations, watching anime and competing in dodgeball. An interesting quirk about me is that I find focus by listening to loud EDM music, especially during late-night work sessions.

Our site is the Moss Side Millenium Powerhouse, a multi-service youth hub located in the heart of Moss Side.

Through their large variety of spaces, ranging from a recording studio, a youth zone and more, the mission of the Powerhouse is to empower young people to reach their full potential.

During this site visit, Lisa gave us a tour of the building, while also highlighting the key spaces of the building and where the interventions could be useful to improve either the thermal performance or internal layout of the building. This particular discussion and site visit helped form the foundation of our project!

I initially pursued a major in Graphic Design during college but later switched to Environmental Design. Eventually, I decided to study Architecture in graduate school. Throughout my academic journey, I found great pleasure in creating physical models using various materials. And I am good at spatial narrative, digital modelling, planar collage and morphogenesis. I often collaborate with other majors to do interdisciplinary research, and have studied the use of fabrics and machinery in architecture. I’m looking forward to working on the Friends of Victoria Park project and how we can come up with creative ways of providing a safe and fun space for children in Stretford.
Skills: Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Enscape.

SITE VISIT – JAN ‘24
We had our first group site visit to Stockport on January 29th, where we were shown around the Underbanks area by Peter, our collaborator at Stockport Council.
The group touched base with Peter at St. Petersgate Bridge in the Little Underbanks area, a key local landmark that will feature right at the heart of the project going forward. The tour then took us to our first ‘gap site’, these being vacant plots in the old town centre that have been earmarked for low-cost, low-impact development. Peter explained that the council were looking at different potential uses for the site such as a pocket park or bin storage for the nearby shops/bars. We then moved onto Lower Hillgate where we visited our second gap site. This one, however, has complicated level constraints which will therefore require a careful and considered design to fully maximise what the council aim to get out of the site.
Following the introduction of the two gap sites, Peter led us along the route back towards the Redrock entertainment complex, outlining the key developments that were taking place along the route that we would be producing ideas for. We were kindly invited into the co-works offices ran by Kelsall Architects who discussed their ongoing nearby projects, highlighting completed works on a scale model of Stockport using bright orange pieces - this helped explain the shared vision that the practice has in partnership with the council in developing the town into a new cultural centre for northern independents.
To round off the site visit, Peter introduced us to the Merseyway Shopping Centre and Market Place, giving us a good understanding of where the largest footfalls were in the town centre, shedding light on areas that would need to be linked into our new wayfinding route through the town. Overall, the site visit gave a good introduction to Stockport and our client, helping us understand the need for a project of this kind.

Hello, I'm Shreya!

I am from India. I hold a bachelor's degree in Architecture from CMR University School of Architecture, where I explored architecture through physical model making. Following my undergraduate studies, I gained valuable experience by working for a year at Design Front Architects, contributing to the execution of five residential projects. Currently, I am pursuing my Master of Architecture at MSA as a part of CPU Atelier. This has been an enriching experience, allowing me to explore innovative computational design methods and acquire proficiency in new modelling software like Rhino and Revit.

The Flag Lane Baths project is an exciting opportunity for me to immerse myself in the challenges and creativity of repurposing a historically significant building. I am eager to explore how this structure, with its rich history, can seamlessly integrate into and contribute to the community.

I am enthusiastic about the prospects of this project and eagerly anticipate the unique learning experiences it will offer.

I come from China and finished my undergraduate study in XJTLU. I have interned at the city Planning Bureau and private architecture studios during the past.

I'm interested in the redesign and reuse of the site, making the abandoned site become revitalized again which is very exciting and changing the use of the site will bring a new experience to people. Our task now is to build a new pocket park on the ruins of the original building, which we hope will make a difference to the residents of Stockport!

Our second meeting at the Central Library Manchester, and the Hulme Hippodrome again !

We visited the Central Library to gather data on the Hulme Hippodrome. With the assistance of the Special Collections' staff at the Central Library, we reviewed and scanned old architectural drawings and official documents. After completing our data collection, we revisited the Hulme Hippodrome to reexamine the details we may have missed during our first visit and engage in discussions about what imaginative additions could be made to the facade of this magnificent theater building.

After completing all the meeting schedules, some members of the group visited the Hulme High Street Library to explore the physical building model created during last year's MSA LIVE project.

The first meeting with our enthusiastic cooperators at the Hulme Hippodrome !

Visiting our MSA LIVE site, the Hulme Hippodrome', we were able to explore a historic and magnificent theater following the guidance of the collaborators. It was a time to imagine how beautifully this place could be reborn as we looked around both the interior and exterior of the building.

Meeting day!

Hello, I'm Keming and you can also call me Komin! I come form Guangdong province which is located in the southern China.

Actully it is not the first meeting for us but we attach particular importance to this meeting because it is the first time that we have all the people here with our collaborator Chris.

Our project is Kingdom life church. It is located in the Old trafford. We have made two times site visit before and have investigated the current site conditions and scale as well as the internal structre of the church and youth centre.

We felt very motivated because at this meeting we explored a lot of what we were going to do afterwards and how we needed to do it. Now we’ve come up with a plan, and we’ll get down to producing the work. Everyone got their own tasks. I will add blog posts each week about the work we’ve done.

Our Site!

The Flag Lane Baths project is situated in the heart of Crewe town. Our site visit consisted of an investigation into the current site conditions and scale as well as a general tour of Crewe so we could better understand the community feel of the place.

A trip to the local library to kickstart some initial research highlighted the historical impact the Crewe swimming baths once had for many living there, and made apparent to us the strong sense of camaraderie behind the project and from our collaborators.
