Our first visit to Alder Grange School!

Upon arrival at the school, the five of us were provided with visitor IDs for the day to access the campus.
Here's our fun-little take on them!

P.S. Of course we changed our photos xD

First of our many brainstorming sessions!

After meeting the students of Alder Grange at MTC along with their tutor, we got together on a Teams call to speak to them to understand their vision for the program. We spoke about our plan of action to ensure it aligned with COYO's brief for shaping up the best possible interactions with the students.

Later, with the help of AI, we came up with ideas to design our poster to capture the essence of MSA Live. This was the first step to bringing our ideas on paper and seeing how the poster may shape up to be.

Hello, my name is Isaac.

I’m from Nigeria, I completed my Part 1 in Canterbury at the university for the creative arts. Then I moved to Birmingham to work for GNA for just over a year. I am currently in FLUX atelier at MSA. My architectural interests are mainly inspired by community development as well as housing and sports focused projects.

During my year out and undergrad, I have picked up 3D model making on various softwares, as well at sketching out ideas and creative realistic visuals. I am also a big fan of adobe creative suites as I love producing diagrams that can communicate ideas graphically.

Outside of architecture, I love watching sports and being involved in sports and activities like taking long walks and exploring the outdoors. I am also I big gamer when I have free time.

I look forward to meeting you all to work on this exciting project for the community.

Hello everyone!
We are collaborating with 'Class of Your Own' to deliver workshops to Level 3 Design Engineer Construct! students at Alder Grange Sixth Form who have a keen interest in the construction industry. Our brief is to support these students on their real-life project - the renovation of St Nicholas' Church, located in beautiful Sabden, Lancashire.

In the 'Action Weeks' of May we will divide ourselves into 2 teams to hold our own 1-week design competition to renovate the church and later present it to the students. It is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in a real life project, creating diverse and exciting material for your portfolios while uplifting your design skills by working with students.

Hello!

My name is Tom and I am an M.Arch-1 student in &rchitecture. I completed my undergrad at the University of Huddersfield. My work experience was centered around education buildings, including projects at the University of Nottingham and Phase 2 of the new Manchester College building opposite AO Arena!

I enjoy various sports, having raced bikes around the country however at the moment the focus is running as I have entered Manchester Marathon this April. Aside from these, you can usually find me at the Etihad.

I have developed various skills in my architectural journey so far. Aside from the usual 3D modelling and Adobe Suite, I think my communication & people skills are the most valuable to our MSA live project.

Hello! I'm Hana.

I'm from Brunei, but I completed my Part 1 here at the Manchester School of Architecture. I took a little under 2 years out to work in practice before coming back to Manchester to start my Master's in the PRAXXIS atelier.

My interests in architecture revolve around creating meaningful community and user-centric architecture with a social agenda alongside participatory design. My architecture skills mainly lie in Revit, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) and AutoCAD though I have some experience with Lumion.

Outside of architecture, I also love to travel, eat, binge watch series and read.

I'm looking forward to being able to work with both the community and collaborators in order to come up with creative ways to improve the fabric performance and internal spaces of the Powerhouse. I'm excited to meet everyone and see what we come up with!

Hi , I'm Gehao Ye

I graduated from Wenzhou university. My undergraduate degree was in environment and art design. But my current major is architecture and adaptive reuse because I really like buildings with historical flavour. Many of today's buildings are in need of maintenance, preservation, remodelling, etc. That's another reason I'm interested in this.

Outside of architecture, I also really enjoy traveling, and I will record the interesting things that happen during my journeys.

Thank you very much for meeting each other in this field.Hoping that our future collaboration will continue to be wonderful.

Second Client Meeting

Our team met with our collaborators last week to update them on where we've got to with planning our action weeks. We sent them our proposed poster to get some feedback, discussed the project name, then walked them through what we are hoping to produce. We discussed what outcomes they were hoping to achieve, how we might meet those goals, and the content we were anticipating for our publication.

Our collaborators are keen to drive up interest in the project, and we discussed some strategies from their system that we could be using, such as a public noticeboard style site, and presenting to a wider reach in Tameside Borough Council.

Site Visit

Our project aims to connect the heart of the city - the city center - with its main transport hubs: the main railway station and bus station. Through site visits, we've identified the challenges that residents and visitors face when navigating between these key points. Our aim is not only to streamline these pathways but also to enliven the city through innovative planning and design, enhancing urban vitality and accessibility.

Our approach is to create an intuitive and engaging route that makes the journey from the city center to the train and bus stations a pleasant experience. We plan to incorporate a variety of amenities along these routes, such as comfortable seating, fun children's play areas, and multi-purpose activity spaces. These features will cater to the daily commuter as well as offer tourists the opportunity to explore Hyde's unique charm.

In particular, we will focus on revitalizing the town center square by introducing outdoor shops and activity spaces to reactivate the area's commercial and social potential. Our design philosophy emphasizes sustainability and community engagement, ensuring that the project not only meets current needs but is also adaptable for future developments.

Throughout the delivery process, we will work closely with community members and government agencies to ensure that our planning reflects the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders. Through this project, we aim to add a vibrant touch to Hyde's cityscape while improving the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Hello there! I'm Alex, a currently MArch 1 student from Romania, from the CPU atelier. Before joining this course I did my Architecture undergraduate course also at MSA, followed by one year of practice in London.

As a CPU student, my architectural approach consists of multiple iterations based on holistic analysis of the brief requirements and the client needs.

During the past years I gained a set of skills in 3D modeling (SketchUp, Revit & some Rhino) and rendering software (Lumion) as well as Adobe Suite (InDesign & Photoshop). I thrive on solving problems in our current society through client engagement and creative design solutions. Also, my organization skills gained during practice will be beneficial to this group as this project.

Outside architecture, I enjoy my free time travelling and swimming as well as occasionally mountain biking and hiking when I visit my home country.

I am looking forward to meeting the entire team in May in order to have a productive and amazing time.

It was great to meet Sally and Ecaterina from SHOP Preston CIC, a small-scale community event space in the offices of the North West Design Collective (nwdc). Established to create an affordable venue for cultural and social activities, SHOP is constantly evolving and looking for new ways to provide functional spaces for a variety of users of the space, including painters, musicians, photographers, sculptors, workshops, pop-up shops and more, all within a two-week period.

We had a great chat about the project and aims, and look forward to working with them over the coming weeks!

Refining the Brief

Meeting with Sally and Ecaterina at the site, we talked through some initial ideas of ours to develop the brief and define the outputs. We were able to see how they currently use the space as well as tell us of any challenges they have, or places they feel need improvement.

Site Analysis

A site visit in the first part of the year really helped us familiarise ourselves with the space at SHOP, taking measurements and understanding how the building operates to make sure we can create usable multifunctional furniture that fits into the space.

Heyyy :D

My name is Dakun Wang, a Chinese. Currently, I'm studying Architecture and Adaptive Reuse, which makes me so excited! Actually, this programme is my interdisciplinary learning experience after my bachelor. I graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in home product design.

In addition to my extraordinary interest in architecture, I am so good at model-making. I have done some nice LEGO MOCs for rereading the real life. Of course, there are many prototypes for my projects as well. Beyond the study experience, I'm also a big fan of movies and Nintendo. That is why I chose this topic, I know the value of innocence and the endless possibilities it can bring.

Hey guys!

I’m Maega from Chennai, India. I’m currently doing my first year of MArch with &rchitecture. I'm fascinated by the potential of architecture and its capacity to impact the dynamic of a space. To me, architecture isn't just about designing buildings but creating spaces that influence our lives and everyday environment.

Apart from architecture, I’ve always loved spending my time indulging in dance and music. Dancing, singing and playing my handy little guitar are my go-to hobbies. I believe that creativity is manifested in many different ways, and it often shines the brightest through a child's unbridled expression. I am really excited about this project and look forward to making it a huge success.

Client and Site

The site is located on the corner of one of the oldest streets in Preston. Previously the offices for an iron foundry over the road from the late 1800s to 1960s, a charity shop took over the premises and became well known across Preston. Charity Shop Rwanda occupied the building until 2020, when SHOP was established, keeping the letters from the previous sign.

The building and studio are now a colourful, versatile place that adapts to each new user, reusing and reapplying materials throughout.

SHOP Preston is looking for a set of multifunctional display units/furniture to fit in their window that will suit all the events they cater for from exhibitions to workshops and pop-ups, able to adapt and evolve as their needs change. As part of this brief, we will be producing a 1:1 prototype of our design that we create over the two action weeks.

OUR SITE:
Our site, Marple, is located close to the Peak District and surrounded by beautiful views to the countryside and canals. Located in the Stockport Council district, it has a rich industrial history and a strong community spirit, with a huge variety of community groups who are committed to enhancing the town and its surroundings.

OUR BRIEF:
The project provides an exciting opportunity to reimagine the future of Marple, enhancing the existing vibrancy and community spirit of the town whilst embracing ‘big ideas’ and creative thinking.

The core brief is a public realm enhancement scheme, designing a series of interactive installations throughout varied and exciting sites in Marple, which will establish a new route through the town, creating new incentives for increased use of the public realm and strengthening the social fabric. The proposals will additionally enhance and celebrating the existing assets in the town, including the beautiful park overlooking the Peak District, pedestrianised shopping streets and picturesque canals. The project may involve street furniture, sculpture and planting proposals, but the collaborators are keen to embrace any inventive ideas regarding alternative proposals. Our collaborators are hoping that the ideas generated from our project will fire up the imaginations of the residents of Marple, to encourage them to think outside the box about the potential of their town.

As the project is primarily about communicating big ideas which will generate enthusiasm within the community, it will encourage full creative freedom to push the limits of architectural thinking and presentation skills. The project will also facilitate development of software, visualisation, presentation and model-making skills.

OUR COLLABORATORS :
Marple Civic Society was formed in 1961 with a vision of ensuring that Marple would be a ‘good place to live, work and visit’. The organisation takes an active role in shaping the future of the town and ensuring that Marple will be an increasingly vibrant and sustainable place in which to lead fulfilling lives, through projects such as consultations involving the Marple Leisure and Community Hub, and tree planting initiatives. As residents of Marple, our enthusiastic and inspiring collaborators - Joe, Andrew, Greg and Phil - are invested in the potential of our project to spark new conversations about future possibilities for Marple.

3. Upon this visit we were fortunate enough to engage with the users of the centre and really immerse ourselves within the Seedly community! After a morning of measuring our site and sketching our initial ideas, we had a masterclass in croquet from members of the Seedly Croquet team.

4. It was a lovely opportunity to play a series of matches with them and improve our croquet games. We learned how people tended to visit the pavilion 1-3 times a week, and regularly enjoyed it as their social space. The pavilion really caters to all, from croquet to musical evenings and bingo too.

It was lovely to meet everyone and we are excited for our next visit back, particularly all looking forward to another game of croquet in the summer time.

1. Our site is the Seedly Pavilion community cafe and gardens Buile Hill Park. It is the oldest park in Salford and has a busy community hub for local residents. The community consists of a true mixture from the affluent houses to the north of the site, to the social housing and affordable housing schemes to the south. The area of Seedly has featured high on the deprivation index for many years.

We are all eager to contribute to this community, and help the facilities which cater for the locals who use and love this community centre.

2. Upon our first site visit we walked the grounds and met with our main contact and lovely guide, Mark. We scoped the site and were able to have a look at the existing facilities and understand the desired improvements. Finally, we wrapped up with a lunch which Co-op kindly gifted the Growing Togetherness CIC for us!

First Team Meeting

On February 6th, our group convened for our initial team meeting. Each of us had prepared ideas for the designs related to the specific functions required for the site. These ideas were presented on a screen to ensure that everyone in the group was informed. Towards the conclusion of the meeting, we assigned distinct roles to each team member. Simultaneously, we initiated the planning process for our action week, specifying the time required for each activity and identifying the deliverables due by the week's end.

Once all the details were settled and our plans were in place, we progressed to our subsequent meeting with our tutor. During this session, our tutor provided valuable suggestions for us to incorporate in our upcoming weeks of work.

Site & Users

The site is situated in a residential neighborhood in Stretford, Manchester, and is part of the beloved Victoria Park—a widely cherished communal space within the community. Within the park, there is currently an empty grass field serving as a communal garden and a children's playground.

On January 17th, we had the opportunity to meet with Jane from 'Friends of Victoria Park,' an NGO actively involved in the development and planning of the park. This organization not only conducts weekly activities for park users but also operates a cafe that contributes to the financial needs of the office. During our site visit, we explored the park with Jane, gathering insights and information.

Our designated task is to transform the existing grass field located at the south side of the park into a space that is SEN (Special Educational Needs) friendly. The envisioned space aims to incorporate key features such as a community garden, a storytelling area, and a playground specifically designed for SEN users. To better understand the needs and requirements of the park's users, we engaged in discussions with Jane and some other individuals who frequent the park. Thorough notes were taken during these interactions, and our planning process has since commenced, guided by the valuable information gathered from the site visit.

Site Visit —— Station South

On January 17, 2024, we met our collaborators at the site – Station South!

Station South cafe in the heart of Levenshulme. It is located directly above the fallow field cycle loop. Whilst offering cycle classes, a repair station in addition to planting beds are also provided for the community to promote a greener and healthier lifestyle.

Our group members were guided by our collaborators to visit the Station South. We started from the indoor bike repair station, where many kinds of bikes are placed there, such as adults’ bikes and very cute children's bikes. Then we went outside, where collaborators showed us the several points, including two bicycle warehouses, a children's learning playground, an allotment and some rest areas for visitors. Our collaborators also shared some landscape design ideas with us. They hope that this healthier lifestyle will be known to more people.

Later, we discussed our preliminary design goals, including overall landscape design for the site, bicycle storage facilities for visitors' convenience, and promotional efforts for the project. We were all looking forward to a series of interesting changes that will take place at this site!

Hi everyone!

I’m Hayley McCaffer and I am the Population Health Programme Officer for Physical Activity and Ageing Well at Tameside Council. My role focuses on working with organisations and residents to develop projects and initiatives to help residents move more, more often, and help make Tameside a great place to live, work and grow older in.

I believe that all communities should have access to green spaces and opportunities to be active in the places they live, and this is why I asked the MSA team to design a more accessible Chadwick Dam. Movement is for everyone, and using a place-based approach involving the local community will help reduce existing health inequalities in that area.

Making Chadwick Dam an accessible place where everyone can be active, socialise or spend time being mindful will have physical and mental health benefits for the whole community. I am excited to see what the MSA students create!

The friendly and harmonious atmosphere of the community is reflected in the park. I am very excited about the theme of improving the overall practicality of the park through small renovations. I hope that people in the community can enhance their happiness through these renovations.
