DAY 3 Mulching of General Area

A team of five people went to site to meet Oldham Council and discuss the Glade locations and pathway arrangements. The group then started to formalise these layouts with mulch provided by the council. As the specific location of trees and pathways were largely speculative up until this point, this helped to formalise the layout and suggested further possible uses of the space. The group could then decide on locations and quantities of birdhouses and signs for the workshop group to start building.

Day Seven – Finalising The Design
A brand new day has arrived, and we are filled with excitement as we approach the finalisation of our design. In the morning, we gathered at the Geoffrey Manton building, eager to conclude our plans for both the building and the moat, following our productive discussions from the previous day. We have successfully completed the floor plan drawings for the building using AutoCAD and are now transitioning to constructing the 3D model in Rhino.
To foster collaboration and gather valuable input, we projected the model-making process onto a big screen, allowing everyone to observe and share their opinions. This interactive approach enables us to not only receive feedback but also encourages the exchange of new ideas. It proves to be an effective method of involving everyone in the decision-making process and gathering their final thoughts.

Day 5: Developing Ideas

Today, BA students tried out the school computers in the CAD lab to start individual group tasks.
Team A cut their first truss and laser cut today in B15.
Team B started brainstorming about the lighting designs for the interior of the building based on a variety of reference images found on Friday. One group used hanging lights, which can effectively reduce the distance from the light source to the floor and improve the light conditions in the interior. The MArch team used a combination of both types of light, which was both practical and innovative.
According to the brainstorming session on Friday, Team C started to turn the paper drawings into electronic drafts. In addition, the BA students created a total of 4-5 options for the placement of the staircase and the design of the loft space, which was very feasible, and the MArch students also designed implementable solutions through their knowledge of the site and internal regulations.
Posted 17 May 2023 11:27
During the 6th day, the participants took advantage of various software tools to propel their project forward. they had the freedom to choose the tools that best suited their needs and preferences, enabling them to showcase their creativity and unique perspectives. In order to ensure smooth progress and a cohesive final outcome, the class engaged in discussions regarding program coordination. These discussions allowed them to have a clearer understanding of the overall project direction. Specific responsibilities were assigned to each team member to facilitate efficient teamwork and accountability. This task delegation aimed to leverage each individual's strengths and expertise, ensuring a balanced distribution of work and promoting a sense of ownership among team members.

The completion of these essential documents set the stage for the next steps in theAcouSkate project, bringing the vision of enhanced sound treatments at ProjektsMCR skatepark one step closer to reality. We are now ready to move forward in constructing the 1:2 model of the module.
Posted 17 May 2023 09:41
Once the 1:20 scale site model was complete, it served as the canvas for the placement of the 1:20 scale sound modules. The team strategically positioned each module within the model, paying close attention to factors such as line of sight, proximity to skating areas, and optimal sound distribution.

This exercise allowed the team to visualize the spatial relationship between the sound modules and the skatepark, ensuring that the placement would not only enhance sound quality but also seamlessly integrate with the overall aesthetics of the site.

The project is located in sale manchester, the project idea stems from many factors, one the ability to create a wider connection to the urban district from within our small scale topology. The project will involve in creating multifaceted complex modulated systems congenially working and blending with each other. Interactions of different agents will need to be simulated in order to find the best outcome for each modulated geometry which will help to provide internal Articulation and flow.
Posted 17 May 2023 00:50
The project will be approached in the form of a design exercise, where participants will develop key skills including basic 3D modelling. A great focus will be put into communicating with and fulfilling real clients' needs.

15.05.23 - DAY 5: After a successful and productive Week 1, we continued to follow the action plan and aimed to finish furnishing the 3D model and working on the visuals to present to the collaborators. So far, we have made lots of progress and we are on schedule to present to the community on Wednesday the 17th! We finalised some moodboards too that we will add to our presentation to show our design process to the collaborators.
Posted 16 May 2023 23:32
One of the main outputs we are producing for our collaborator is a physical 1:200 scale site model. In week one we began preparing the physical model by assisting a few of the BA students in setting up a CAD file. We used Digimaps to work out the surrounding building dimensions and used our existing plans and elevations for the swimming pool. After the file had been prepared for all the pieces required, we went to the B.15 workshop to laser cut the pieces for the model. Finally, as a whole group we started to assemble the laser cut MDF pieces to make the site model.

Day 6: Build Team
Today the build team started cladding the timber frames we built yesterday with OSB. Prior to that they had to be coated with timber preservative to protect from decay and insect attack. Cladding with OSB helped strengthen the timber frames, and we all became more comfortable with using a track saw. After this was done the rest of the timber we order was delivered and we were able to create a timber frame window using a recycled window. One of the eco-shed walls had to be modified to fit the frame. This also had to be soaked with timber preservative. While the window was being made some of the team started putting the walls together with corner posts. It was really exciting seeing everything start to come together. With two of the walls up we started cutting 3x2 treated timber for the floor. It was important to get treated timber to protect the floor from future water damage, and other things that can lead to decay and rot. Today was an exciting and productive day, with everyone becoming more comfortable and skilled with the various tools we are using. Tomorrow will be very exciting to see more and more of the eco-shed come together. And eventually the lean-to shelter.

With some of the walls up it is easier to imagine the exposed mycelium insulation that will fit between the timber studs. While the research team may not be contributing to the eco-shed physically they are helping with the research that will help make the space warm and comfortable. All together the eco-shed and research will help show funders the power of mycelium and showcase the benefits of adding mycelium insulation to the Boiler House building.
