WHAT IS CASTLEFIELD?

Castlefield forum are looking to create a stronger brand for the area. Our aim is to create a design package for the client. Currently Castlefield is having an identity crisis. We plan to create an identity and branding package of font style, colours and products for the area, to consolidate and easily identify Castlefield as a place. We hope to provide them as an inventory for the client to distribute.

Day one
Firstly, March students met at the site location to discuss the activities of the day. Then, at 10:00am, the undergraduate students joined, they introduced themselves, and were briefed about the project, as well as the upcoming 2 weeks work. After that, the team went on a stroll around Castelfield in order for the undergraduates to get familiar with the site. Lastly, the whole party went to the pub, in order to get to know each other better.

Today we carried out software workshops on Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and SketchUp for the BA's. We then did a collaboration where we did preliminary sketches for the proposal with group feedback.

Day 3
We started the morning by splitting into groups and focused on producing historical information and context for the site. This included historical maps, land use and defining the designated spaces in Castlefield which we will centre the furniture around. In the afternoon, we finalised the designs for the furniture catalogue in sketch form so the proposals are ready to be draw up on the computer the following day.

Today, we took the next step in our design development for Castlefield by moving from sketches to digitalized versions. We brainstormed ideas and collaborated to create a unique and functional space for the community.
We started the day with a breakfast spread to fuel our creativity. We enjoyed orange juice, delicious croissants, and other treats that gave us the energy to tackle the day's work.
Throughout the day, we worked on creating digital sketches, floor plans, and 3D models of the Castlefield development. We challenged each other's assumptions and refined our ideas to create a design we were all proud of.
Overall, it was an exciting day filled with creativity and collaboration. We can't wait to continue working on Castlefield and see our ideas come to life.

We started to finalise the 3D modelling components for the design catalogue. As a team we collaborated on the bus stops, planters, and streetlights as well as developing pages for use in the publication. Moreover, we tasked a small group with sketching out and creating the front cover for the publication document. In the afternoon we had a design review on today’s outcomes and a group discussion of what we need to progress with tomorrow.
Posted 16 May 2023 10:35
Today, we finalised the 3D modelling and started rendering the final views for the different components. We also finalised the main cover posters, as well as put in place a presentation to show our work to the collaborators tomorrow.
Posted 17 May 2023 10:39
Today we completed renders of our proposed furniture on site. This involved using the models on SketchUp and exporting them to Photoshop to render.

In the morning we finalised the client presentation, making sure all group members were happy with the document. Then, we decided who would speak over each page and did a run through to make sure everyone knew what to say and felt ready for the client meeting in the afternoon.

In the afternoon we had the client meeting at 2pm. The BA1's, BA2's and Masters students each spoke within the presentation and the client engaged very well with the design catalogue which was produced. The client was impressed with the proposed designs and will be emailing us their feedback tomorrow.

Today we finalised the changes which the client had requested we make. This included putting the chosen options of street light and bus stop into the final publication. After finalising the documents, we all went for food together to celebrate completing MSA Live.

Collages were created to express the atmosphere of the area. These were created by the BA1 and BA2 students in order for them to develop a deeper connection and understanding of Castlefield.
Posted 19 May 2023 17:27
Based on the site visit, we did a sketching workshop for the BA1's and BA2's, to design preliminary sketches of furniture for Castlefield. We defined that they should look for precedents to aid their design of street lights, benches, planters, and bus stops.
Posted 19 May 2023 17:34
Early on in the design process, we defined a color palette and font, that were provided by the client, which we used throughout the project. As seen in the image, logos and signage were also designed to help distinguish Castlefield's identity.
Posted 19 May 2023 17:47
These are the final two options for the bus stops, which we presented to the client asking them to decide which option would suit them the best. Both options were quite similar, but in the end, the client chose option 1.

We designed modular benches to allow flexibility in their placement and size. We have demonstrated variations of how the modular seating can be layed out.
Posted 19 May 2023 17:58
We designed two options for street lights. The first option was an updated version of the current street lights in the area, with new paint work, light fitting and a banner logo. The second option, was a completely new design which was inspired by the archways of the Roman Fort, and the viaduct. This incorporated a sleek light fitting, and a smaller logo.
Posted 19 May 2023 18:04
The planters were also done in a modular design, with an inset base, so that they could be stackable. The idea behind doing a modular design was to be able to change their size and arrangement so that they could be adaptable to the site.

We created a template for QR codes which incorporates the new Castlefield Forum logo, for the client to be able to use this accordingly for the historical context of different parts of the site. The QR code attached, goes to the Castlefield Forum website.

Through defining the elements of change for Castlefield, we feel we have changed the project from "What is Castlefield?" to "This is Castlefield".
