Group 31
PUTTING MARPLE ON THE MAP

We are a student led team working closely with the Marple Civic Society to reimagine and revive Marple’s Swimming Pool at an urban scale. As community is at the heart of the project, we will be delving into Marple's rich heritage and looking at techniques to translate and communicate architecture to non-architects. Adaptive reuse, adaptability and parasitic architecture strategies will be employed to uncover ways of altering Marple’s townscape. The main objective is to produce a site model of Marple for the collaborators to utilise at their summer exhibition. A range of skills will be implemented into the action week period, from digital modelmaking software to creating a final physical model.

The first week of Action Week will focus on a variety of outputs, which will contribute to the final publication, namely site analysis research and design development of the existing building. A site visit to Marple will help inform students' understanding of the context, which will be integrated into their design. Optional workshops centered around 2D and 3D software will be provided, in order to guide students in the right direction of the desired design outputs.
Preparation and assembly for the final physical model are the key components of this week and will be achieved and completed through various stages: AutoCAD prep (for lasercutting) and assembly. The 1:200 physical model, will be at a workable scale and sufficiently flexible, so that you will have the opportunity to play with the interiors and explore the ideologies connected parasitic architecture.

The second week will focus primarily on consolidating the final chosen design and visually expressing these through 2D drawings and 3D renderings, for which we will be more than happy to help guide you and give you software tips. The workshops from the first week will also be helpful for giving you a headstart on software you may not be the most familiar with. Finally, all the outputs completed in the first and second week will be collated into the final publication.

The site is Marple's very own swimming baths, which was opened in 1931 and is located along Stockport Road's high street. Now, an out of use building, the swimming baths served a vital community aspect, and invokes fond memories in its residents, who had gone their as children and had taken their own children swimming there years later. The aim of the project is to restore the nostalgia bought upon by the building.

Meet our lovely collaborators - The Marple Civic Society. The members on the committee are dedicated to retaining the character and heritage of Marple and are excited to see students ideas of what they reenvisage Marple Baths to be.

Throughout the action weeks we'll be holding workshops for the BA students on various 2D and 3D digital software, so that the students can develop their visualisation and presentation skills for our collaborators and the people of Marple.

Week 01, Day 01
We kickstarted the action week with a visit to Marple. Students were able to get a firsthand understanding of the Swimming baths and then ended the visit with a trip to the pub

Week 01, Day 2
After the Site visit, BA students studied and analyzed the site and its context and they were able to explore a range of ideas through different techniques for the project design activity.
Posted 13 May 2023 23:48
The students began by discussing and developing design ideas in small groups following on from day 2 activities. A few students went to the B.15 model workshop to laser cut pieces for the site model. In the afternoon we ran a Rhino workshop, where we 3D modelled the existing swimming pool building, demonstrating how Rhino can be used. We finished the day by having a group discussion about the preliminary design ideas the BA students had began preparing in groups.

We commence day 4 by everyone taking part in assembling the site model. Once we had finished assembling the model by mid-afternoon we encouraged the students in their groups to carry on developing their design ideas. We discussed with each group what they were most interested in incorporating in their designs and suggested precedent studies to look at.

Week 02, Day 01
Commencing week two we were keen to start moving towards a final design resolution. We spent the morning reviewing the 3 groups of BA students design concepts. Each group presented their design development so far to everyone and as a collective we reflected on key parts of the design idea which could be taken forward to the final design output. In the afternoon we directed the students to a concept for the final design output, which would encompass the key elements discussed in the mornings review. The BA students then dived into two groups who would then be focusing on their respective part of the swimming pool building moving forward.

One of the main outputs we are producing for our collaborator is a physical 1:200 scale site model. In week one we began preparing the physical model by assisting a few of the BA students in setting up a CAD file. We used Digimaps to work out the surrounding building dimensions and used our existing plans and elevations for the swimming pool. After the file had been prepared for all the pieces required, we went to the B.15 workshop to laser cut the pieces for the model. Finally, as a whole group we started to assemble the laser cut MDF pieces to make the site model.

Week 02, Day 03
We started the production and post-production of the first designs through various software such as AutoCad, Rhino and Illustrator with great attention to the project design process.
Posted 18 May 2023 19:49
Week 02, Day 03
A few more final changes to the design to then finish the papers and get ready to do the lasercut activity for the physical model.
Posted 18 May 2023 19:51
Week 02, Day 04
We spend the day preparing the final developed design drawings and images. A few students went to the B.15 model workshop to laser cut the pieces for the new proposed scheme of the building to be placed on the site model.

Week 02, Day 05
As a group we spent some time assembling the proposed swimming pool physical model to be placed on the site model and then we took pictures of the model. In the remaining time the students worked on finalising any drawings while we worked on finishing the publication.
