0161 COMMUNITY BUS

The 0161 Community Bus is a community-led multifunctional venue which hosts a mobile art gallery, library and multi-use spaces for all kinds of activities or sports. This project will look at transforming an old bus to a movable venue, both interior and exterior to fit the needs of various events. Students will be working with both digital and manual approaches into visualizing drawings, graphics, sketches familiarizing with the concept of adaptive reuse, socially productive spaces and slow architecture.

0161 Community Bus

The goal of this project is to transform an old bus into a flexible moving community bus and a mobile art gallery, library, and multi-purpose space for all to use and enjoy. Alongside this, an accompanying digital resource in the form of an app will be created to support the work of the mobile space and act as a tracker to provide the community with the exact location of the bus for future community events. The project's community is centered around Greater Manchester, working to unite communities that have been previously torn apart.

Through the provision of a safe space, the project aims to reach a wider audience, focusing on art as a means of supporting mental wellbeing and empowering individuals to take control of their futures. The project will provide a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing within communities across Greater Manchester.

The expected output of the project is a set of visualizations for the bus project and a digital portal interface to connect people through the mobile community hub.

Students involved in this project will have the opportunity to develop a diverse range of skills, including project management, artistic, design, digital, communication, collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, and research and analytical skills.

You will be working with both digital and manual approaches while designing the community bus. Digital softwares that we will be looking at are: SketchUp, AutoCad, InDesign, Photoshop and Enscape. We will be producing illustrative visuals, graphics, sketches, and drawings to communicate our ideas and potential opportunities for the community bus to our collaborator for them to proceed with bringing the project to life.

Through this project, students will be familiarised with the concept of adaptive reuse, socially productive spaces and slow architecture.

Students will gain experiences in developing a website interface and working with our project partner. Through their involvement in the project, students can improve their communication and leadership skills by taking on different roles within the project and workshop activities.

DAY 1 – Online Meet-up

We kick started the first week of MSA Live with an online meeting with everyone in the group. Through this meeting, we had the opportunity to introduce ourselves and got to know each other a little bit better. We talked about our hobbies, personal interests, and our expectations of the group. Next, an introductory presentation was given by the MArch team to provide more information about the collaborator, project, and a run through of the coming action weeks. To wrap it all up, a collage making activity was initiated to expand our ideas on transforming the 0161 Community Bus. Through this activity, we were not limited to any specific requirements but instead got to explore all the possibilities on what an interchangeable bus could look like. The outcomes of today will be discussed together as a group, tomorrow.

DAY 2 – Mixed Media Exploration

We started off the day by having a group discussion on the previous day’s task. Everyone had the opportunity to talk about our own interpretations on what an interchangeable bus could look like. Our personalities were really evident and reflected in the individual collages we’ve produced on Day 1. Next, a presentation was given by the MArch team to introduce the three themes of the bus; library, art gallery, and gym. After the presentation, it was made clear that the idea of an interchangeable bus should be put on hold, to take a step back, and to look at the bigger picture. Instead, we worked on another visualization through a mixed media approach of a bus with a fixed theme for each group. This was to cultivate our creativity in the story telling aspect. Through this activity, we were encouraged to think outside the box and not to converge our focus solely on the interior— we let our imaginations run wild in creating an ambitious visualization of the bus under respective themes

DAY 3 – Spatial Programming

The day started off with a cut ‘n’ paste workshop. Visualisations from yesterday were printed out and combined together to envisage an interchangeable bus. This new visualisation produced together as a group allowed us to make critical decisions on how to combine the three programmes (art gallery, gym, and library) into one flexible moving bus for the community. After this activity, more specific requirements tailored to the preferences and needs of 0161 Community were introduced to the group. After familiarising ourselves with the spatial requirements needed for the bus, we began to lay out our ideas for the spaces through conceptual bubble diagrams. With the bubble diagrams in hand, we were able to produce a 3D version of the spatial programming in SketchUp to execute our ideas better. This model will then be the base model of the bus to be used for future activities.

DAY 4 – 3D & 2D Exploration

Today, the group continued to translate their ideas on the spatial organization of the bus into a 3D model. The group was divided into two main teams; 3D team and 2D team. The 3D team focused mainly in modelling the interventions for the bus while the 2D team worked on annotating the plan, section, and elevation drawings for the bus. The workshop was guided by the MArch team in terms of software handling and architectural drawing conventions. New ideas on added components for the bus was developed further throughout the workshop.

DAY 5 – Stylisation & Visualisation Workshop

Today’s activities mainly focused on post-production. The day started with a stylisation workshop led by the MArch team. This workshop provides guidance in the basics of rendering orthographical drawings through Adobe Illustrator. We learned how to adjust line weights, assign plot styles and patterns to produce a comprehensive presentation drawing. After lunch, the group focused on visualisation renderings as a way to bring the design to life. Each group worked on their individual themes to create different scenarios for the flexible 0161 Community Bus.

DAY 6 – Ideations For App Interface Design

Today, we moved on to brainstorming ideations for the 0161 Community Bus app. A presentation was given by the MArch team to provide the group with some initial information and goals for the app. The main tasks were to design the app layout for a live bus tracking feature, an activity page of each themed scenario, and a bus calendar page while keeping in mind how the app would function in a user-friendly way. In the afternoon, the group progressed to working out the polished versions of the app designs.

DAY 7 – Further Developments For App Design

Today, the BA1 and BA2 team had a mini presentation of their current app layouts. The group made further discussions on areas that could be improved for the 0161 Community Bus app. After the discussion, the group progressed to realising the interface designs. While working to improve the app layout, the MArch team provided guidance in software handling and gave suggestions on the overall scheme.

DAY 8 – Presenting The Outcomes

On Thursday, the group compiled all the work we have made into a presentation slide for 0161 Community. All the outputs executed by the group were presented and discussed together to recap everything and ensure we have produced a comprehensive scheme for 0161 Community. This presentation include the overall design and concept for the interchangeable bus as well as designs and user-functionality of the mobile app design.

DAY 9 – Wrapping Up

On Friday, the BA1 and BA2 teams made minor tweaks to the bus and app design while the MArch team worked on the publication. At the end of the day, the final proposal was handover to 0161 Community.
