Day eight:
The clock is ticking, and it's time to buckle up and get ready to showcase all the hard work we've put in.
We were in the final stretch of finalising the renders for the master plan, and the BAs were working to finish up the rendered views of each pod individually.
After that, we got to work putting all the final outputs into the publication template.

I enjoyed learning about the context of the site in Chorlton and looking at examples of meanwhile projects. I also enjoyed exploring how different types of materiality can be incorporated into projects.

I have learnt new ways to express and illustrate concepts and iteration for projects and how to incorporate and evaluate precedents in my projects.

In future projects studio projects I will explore different types of materiality and concepts of meanwhile projects.

Day 6: Research/ Mushroom team

The team spent the day working on the Mycelium specification document in Grosvenor East. Compiling and visualising all of the rich, hands-on content that we have been involved in last week at The Boiler House. The document that we are producing for The Boiler House will include information and statistics on the alternative uses for Mycelium and the sustainable benefits of its production. It will also compare data on the thermal capacity, embodied carbon and material lifespan of Mycelium with current industry equivalents. We hope this document will encourage potential investors to think GREEN and support The Boiler House’s aim to upscale the production of Mycelium as an eco-insulation.

I’ve enjoyed the fact that community engagement has been at the heart of this project from the start. Developing concepts around temporary, playful architecture has also been a refreshing change of pace from the usual studio projects, and the framework we’ve developed here will hopefully allow the stakeholders of Chorlton to implement their own ideas, which feels like a genuinely useful tool that will serve the community in the months and years to come.

I think it would have been nice to create some more models or perhaps a 1:1 intervention as an example of what can be achieved.

I’ve learned a lot about how to structure community-led projects and seeing the impact small, cheap and/or temporary architecture can have on spaces has been very eye opening. I’ve also picked up some valuable tips for Photoshop and InDesign.

I definitely want to focus community engagement in my future studio projects and I now feel like I have the framework for achieving this. I’d also like to experiment more with this kind of low impact architecture as a means of creating interventions that do not require a large economic or carbon cost to implement.

I enjoyed collaborating with students with greater experience and skills. It was great to talk through my ideas and iterations with members of the group. I quite liked the broad project brief- it allowed us great freedom in decision-making. The subject matter was also quite intriguing.

I was involved in the making of the Laser cutting file and have therefore developed my knowledge of AutoCAD.

I want to develop my skills in digital design, so I aim to use Photoshop as well as AutoCAD in my next projects as I have only used PowerPoint up to this point.

Over the last two weeks, I have really enjoyed working with students from different years with more knowledge and experience than me. It was very helpful and insightful to be able to turn to them for guidance and advice throughout the project. I really enjoyed contributing to the site model in B.15 and learnt many skills there, using the bandsaw for the first time. I will definitely carry these skills into future projects. The community focus of this scheme has definitely helped inform my Studio 1.2 project. It has been very rewarding to work on a live project where you can visit and return to site, and I am excited to see the positive impact of future interventions in Chorlton’s vacant spaces.

I really enjoyed doing this project because it made me develop new skills. Thanks to this project, I deepened my knowledge in photoshop and discovered how to cut wood blocks using a bandsaw. It was quite unfortunate I didn’t start the project with much information but after the first day, I understood the task and as a team we worked brilliantly. I will definitely try to use bandsaws in the future for site models and make better collages with my newly acquired photoshop skills.

I've enjoyed meeting people in other years and the insight they have provided. It has been very easy to talk to everyone and the project was made more interesting due to the skills I learned with help from the masters students particularly.

I finally learnt photoshop after avoiding it all year. This was due to the help of the masters students. I've also learnt how to survey a site and delegate work to others when working in a team.

As a wrap up session and a big thank you for collaboration ,we asked all BA students to submit a reflection on the past two weeks. These will be popping up on the blog throughout the day! Starting with India's...

I have enjoyed collaborating with a team across different year groups. I appreciated working with two members of Praxxis which is the atelier I would like to go into in third year. All the MArch leads have brought different expertise and I have learnt new skills from them. The project has been exciting and rewarding as it is based in the community that I live in, Chorlton.

I have learnt new skills in photoshop and illustrator, how to produce a site model from data download and AutoCAD. On site we were able to measure using a laser distance meter which I hadn’t used before. Most importantly I have learnt how to implement a client’s needs within a community setting in a creative way.

Along with my skills and positive experience, I will take forwards the advice and insights that the 5th years gave about part one placements.

Printing

In preparation for the public consultation, we took the important step of printing all the design proposals onto A1 boards. This allowed us to present the students' work in a visually impactful and professional manner, capturing the attention and imagination of the audience.

We also recognized the value of engaging with the local community and creating a lasting impression. To achieve this, we printed mini-sized postcards featuring highlights of each design. These postcards served as a tangible takeaway for the people of St Helens.

DAY 7

DONE AND READY TO MOVE ON SITE. The base of the model is completed and the next task will be implemented on site, in which will be the planting of the flowers and ivy.

This proposal actively supports the community by providing them with a platform (quite literally) to take ownership of their adversity through sharing their stories, thoughts, and experiences. The platform is brought to life through the Hygieia goddess sculpture which represents the communal trauma that exists in the community and how they can wear their trauma as their Armor, rather than locking it internally and letting it manifest inside of them. The sculpture is to be reflected to allow everyone to see themselves in her, whilst the wings will represent the freedom the community can access through processing their past and freeing themselves from the shackles of their trauma. The sculpture is a reminder to the community of their strength offering a source of inspiration and protection.

WEEK 2 // DAY THREE: We caught up with the design/build team to check the progress of the prototype exhibition panels – they’ve created the timber hinges which are looking great! The prototype is successful so far. The curation team reflected on Sue’s comments from the previous day and came up with some titles for the exhibition at Florence Arts Centre. To take a break from putting together exhibition panels we designed some seating for the exhibition and did a little sketch up tutorial on modelling the seating designs. Some of the design/build team continued constructing the prototype whilst others began to create the construction sequence so the process can be copied to easily create more panels in the future. We have begun to discuss the lifecycle of the exhibition and ideas for its repurposing after multiple exhibitions.

DAY 5 Masterplan Design – Signages and Gnomes Making

Two students showed initiative in developing the mystical theme present on the existing Brook. One student created a windchime from Metal offcuts and a wooden block. Another student spent several days building gnomes and mushrooms to place around the site. These were painted and varnished to make them weather resistant. The gnomes are intended to be kept by the council and used during activity days. Meanwhile, the classroom group marked pathways on-site, plotted trees and started the masterplan drawing in preparation for the mulching of the pathways on day 6. The workshop group continued working on the birdhouses and fairy doors on day 5.
Posted 17 May 2023 15:09
DAY 4 Birdhouse Construction and Laser Engraving

Following the NSPCB specifications for birdhouse designs and the conceptual birdhouse designs on day 3, the workshop team started work on 3 birdhouses and 2 bee boxes to encourage wildlife inhabitation of the site. This involved sanding down and gluing the pallets together to form 150mm wide planks. These were then cut, drilled for the nesting holes and nailed together to form the birdhouses. Both the birdhouses and bee boxes were stained a dark brown to be blend in with the natural surroundings. The bee boxes followed a similar process with small holes drilled in large offcuts. Some of the remaining pallets were laser cut to create signages describing the local wildlife. Wires and posts were attached to allow for easy placement around the site.
Posted 17 May 2023 15:09
DAY 4 Precedent Studies and Publication Preparation

Once the on-site spaces were arranged and formalized, we were able to establish a clearer idea of how many birdhouses and signs were needed and determine whether further material was needed to create these. Diagrams, collages, and axonometric site-analysis drawings were developed alongside precedent studies and an early iteration of the publication. This too was helpful in clarifying the outputs, both on-site and for the publication.
