THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENE BY SYAHIRAH HANIS (M.ARCH STUDENT)

This page looks into highlighting prominent people behind the realization of Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square as well as the heritage dotted around the area. While it is important to remember and give credits to the pioneers in the 19th century, it is also essential to showcase people who work hard behind the scene today in the 21st century through the Our Town Hall project, which one day will go down in history as well. As it is a project with the local community at its heart, the Mancunians are especially important as we invite them to share their stories with us at our proposed visitor experience centre in Albert Square.

Today, the research team members were presented with a design challenge where each student had to come up with a layout for WOAH's mobile website that is designed and optimized for hand-held devices, such as smartphones and tablets. The students came up with impressive layouts for the mobile site, which is a great way to understand the design's key functionality before its implementation on the website. This design exercise enabled the students to share ideas and to receive critique to help refine their designs and learn from their peers.

Day 8 – Presentation from David Rudlin

David Rudlin gave an introductory presentation on urban design principles. This was important for helping towards the development of our master plan within Marple. In his talk, he highlighted the difference between architectural and urban design, suggesting that unlike buildings urban spaces are designed from outside to inside. While architecture considers the practical dimensions of humans to ensure ergonomic spaces, urban design focusses more on people as a collective and the activities they do as a community.

David mentioned some key readings including The Image of the City by Kevin Lynch, The Concise Townscape by Gordon Cullen and The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs. He then divided the urban landscape into three key areas: spaces (areas between buildings), places (identity of an area) and life (human activities within that area). After exploring some key urban case studies from all over the world, David laid out the 9 key points from the National Model Design Code. Overall, this provided a practical framework which we could apply to our site. Notably, this included exploring the hierarchy of spaces and streets around the park, reducing the focus on parking and ensuring an appropriate level of urban density within the park.

Craig Dick, the Environmental Sustainability Manager from the Manchester Town Hall project explained the process of sustainability case study of the project in relation with Circular Economy. The circular economy is based on three principles: Design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, regenerate natural systems. With these principles Craig and his team worked on the reclamation of different materials in the construction site.

THE WIDER MANCHESTER BY ELLIOTT TAYLOR (M.ARCH STUDENT)

Elliott's page focuses on the wider context of Manchester, whereby the shift in focus to the rich cultural and historical diversity of it's people can be reflected within the proposed design installation to be constructed on Albert Square - a new space intended to associate specifically with Mancunians in a contemporary setting, and provide an alternate social approach to the area that promotes inclusiveness for local communities, as opposed to the more pristine, and rather elitist surrounding monuments.

Day 8: Finalising Drawings.

Today we have been finalising our drawings ready to collate into the booklet tomorrow. We have been working with the students on styles and presentation skills using a variety of watercolours, hand drawing, photoshop and illustrator. We provided a workshop on illustrator for the students to gain some tips and tricks for creating some quick and effective renders.

We are all really excited to see everyones finished drawings collated in the final presentation tomorrow!

Day 8

What has the 'modularity' group doing today?

"After a few days of strategic and planning design, we were able to build a 3D model on SketchUp, which, although it will consume a lot of time, will help us to quickly recognise and understand what our design will look like in reality, while being able to contribute significantly to later section drawings, floor plans and renderings. We are also continuing our research into materials and lighting."

Todays task was to continue developing both group's designs to the point of achieving a core selection of visualisations. The day began with the fifth years giving advice as to how concepts can be showcased beyond just using rendering software. The goal was to understand how other mediums of producing work can be utilised to achieve stylistic, impactful results. The day's task encouraged both an understanding in the value of establishing an individual style of work as well as pushing beyond our comfort zones.

We kicked off today with a talk from our external guest speaker, Evelyna Hadass. Evelyna studied an Architecture BA but has worked in both architecture and graphic design. The talk and Q&A gave great examples of how work can be presented, in preparation for our presentations to Grizedale Arts on Friday.

After the presentation, our two groups continued working on their proposals. Both of our teams have started to collate ideas and design through sketching and model making, whilst taking into consideration the local area and the needs of the Farmer’s Arms.

Feedback Session with our Collaborators

Today we had an interesting discussion with our collaborators. We presented to them our initial ideas and gave them the chance to comment on them and tell us if they wanted to add something and hear their feedback about what we have produced so far. We all felt extremely connected with the design and we really look forward to make the alteration they suggested!

Great kick start of the day with the team, really impeccable work was shown and further design ideas have been discussed as groups and individually, to go over any missing details of each project. The overall input from the groups and the team have exceeded expectations and the level of thought and architectural interventions were thoroughly communicated through a series of sketches, 3D drawings and conceptual models. In general, the work was compelling and brilliantly developed.

Many questions were asked as they engaged and smiled during the presentation. What a successful day with the PowerTrip team!!

OMI Live Talk // Inspire Bradford were joined this morning by Aaron Coey from OMI Architects. Aaron introduced the team to a selection of precedents of work completed under the theme of building reuse and retrofit. Sharing approaches and experiences, Aaron spoke of the enthusiasm we can apply to working with the constraints of existing structures. He focused on three particular precedents which he considered relevant to our project in Bradford. One of these included the Mustard Tree renovation in Manchester. Aaron spoke of the importance of a building’s significance which isn’t always related to “how it looks”. The project solved the permeability of the building, using a new entrance canopy and bright shutters to identify the entrance and tackled problems relating to circulation and surveillance. The project gave us an insight into the further work we could complete within Little Germany and the next steps on from our masterplan.

We would like to again thank Aaron for his time and advice this morning, we thoroughly enjoyed learning about the work of OMI and the conversations relating to our project!

Day 08: Photoshop Session

After a brief photoshop workshop, we encouraged the BA students to take the 3D design produced in SketchUp and experiment with material choices and presentation style. This gave our BA students the opportunity to practice developing their photoshop skills and expanded their understanding of the tool options available on the software. Their outputs demonstrate their understanding of how material choices can impact the the use of a space. We aim to create site accommodation which encourages its users to respect the space provided by producing quality and cost effective solutions.

We have decided to use panelized CLT frame for the houses due to its sustainability and ease of construction. This is different from the lightweight steel structure used the apartments due to the scale of each building. These CLT panels will be sourced sustainably and transported to the site for construction. For the facade we are using brick slips to align with the heritage of the local Manchester area. We then modelled the structure of the panels to explore the connections and building techniques.
