Personal Intro: Hey there! I love to travel. Visiting and knowing all parts of the world is what I truly live for. I believe experience comes with growth, doesn't matter if it’s a good or bad experience, we still grow from it. Architecture has truly taught me a lot of life lessons and as I dive deeper I realised that Architecture is actually a form of designing life too. Can't wait to work on this project with everyone soon!
This project provides a great opportunity to engage with a myriad of skills critical to aspiring architects. Workshops and collaboration sessions will be held to either learn new or improve existing software skills such as the Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign), Rhino for 3D modelling, and Vray for rendering. Physical skills such as hand drawing and physical model making will also be explored to communicate design ideas. Finally, there will be an opportunity to present the proposals to the collaborators, thereby applying verbal communication skills in a real-life setting.
The project directly supports the local community by upgrading the space which would further facilitate social interactions. By enriching its appeal for commercial hire, the Centre can better reach out to the community by providing more classes, activities, and events at a subsidized rate.
Previously designed as a Parish hall by local architect James Medland Taylor in 1897, Birch Community Centre is an unlisted building that serves the community by providing educational, recreational and leisure opportunities. Working with statutory and voluntary organisations, they host various activities such as yoga, martial arts, a shared reading group and a monthly pub-and-pizza night. One of the most striking features of the community centre is its main hall, with a high vaulted, wooden hammer beam ceiling that can seat up to 120. The Centre offers its space for private hire at commercial rates to subsidise the cost of hosting socially beneficial events for the community. To further enhance its commercial value and appeal, the Centre aspires to enhance its interior and exterior lighting, with the former celebrating the architecture of the main hall’s ceiling and the latter serving as a visual cue to direct visitors to the main entrance. Additionally, they want to improve the building's circulation and programming by providing access and utilization to a presently inaccessible attic space in addition to providing alternative access routes to smaller meeting rooms alongside the main hall, which are currently only accessible through the main hall. These modifications are a valuable asset that ensures continued support to the community.

Our collaborator, Joseph Schneider, is an artist whose practice, though centered on the processes and objects of painting, is multi-disciplinary. As part of his practice, he founded and runs the Rural Art Hub and continues to use the Mother Shippon studio to work alongside and collaboratively with participants of workshops at the hub. He has a BA in Philosophy (University of Sussex) and an MA in Painting (Royal College of Art). He has facilitated interdisciplinary and skill-building workshops across art, play, and social history at a diverse range of organizations including WM College Camden, South London Gallery, PACE, Frieze, Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths University, and Greenwich University.
Rural Art Hub is focusing on climate change and sustainability and intends to use creative solutions to address the lack of creative thinking about sustainability in the community. They believe that this initiative will help them achieve their goals and offer opportunities for local communities and visitors to get involved sustainably, both in theory and practice.

To address the challenges frequently associated with the areas' high unemployment, poverty, and conviction rates, IIFC offers support and campaigns to bring young boys together by offering communal football to those who might benefit health-wise. Health and well-being are significant concerns in our project, and physical activity is proven to improve both physical and mental health. We want to make community football available to everyone, but especially to those who are most at risk in the community, those who would benefit from being on a team in terms of their physical and mental health, and those who may have previously encountered obstacles.
Skills:
The skills you will learn or develop in the project UTOPI-AGE can be divided into three parts responding to the three project phases. During the stage of the previous research, we will be engaged with a client brief, site survey and precedent study. And the specific actions include brainstorming, diagramming, comprehensive macro site analysis and an age-friendly housing workshop. During the design exploration, we will mainly focus on the collaborative working mode in which we will develop our communication skills with our partners and relevant personnel. You will learn iteration skills in a method of physical collage to explore various possibilities. Coming to the final stage of visualization of outcomes, with the help of the team and your peers, you will learn and apply various software including Rhino, Grasshopper, Adobe Suite, AutoCAD, V-Ray, Lumion and so on. You will have a chance to study the whole working flow and gain some precious experience from our students.
Social Impact:
The project is a part of the vision for Ryebank Fields, which is a proposed sustainable, socially and environmentally responsible, residential development. The proposed scheme aims to provide high-quality and affordable homes to meet the needs of the local community, as well as promoting community engagement through physical connections, walkable and accessible features, and the ambition to achieve biodiversity net gain. As for MSA Group 32’s age-friendly housing project, we will focus on three aspects of the big picture:
- Establish a community network to improve social connections
- Pay attention to aged people's physical and mental health by manipulating the residential environment
- Promote equality among different groups of people
HOBBY: Films, Coffee and consistently failing in baking
FUN FACT ABOUT ME: I have a pet African grey parrot at home; and three cats who have decided to leave their neighbors for my home, so now it's a part-time cat Airbnb. I have a soft spot for all things Studio Ghibli and Pixar. Grew up with comics and movies and for me, it's DC > Marvel.
A FAVOURITE FOOD: I grew up eating 'Haleem'. Now either it's the nostalgia of my mum making it, or the meat and barley brothy goodness with that hint of ginger and chili that sends you to the next dimension, that makes it unrivaled.
HOLIDAY DREAM: It's the dream of seeing Bruges and a trip through Japan that takes the student pain away.
Site:
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) own a 4.69 hectare site to the north of Longford Road, Chorlton. The current vehicle access to the site is from the junction of Longford Road with Ryebank Road, with further pedestrian access onto Ryebank Road to the north. In 2019, the University decided to sell the land to a suitable developer as part of its strategy to consolidate onto a single, sustainable, city campus. The University has now chosen a partnership between Step Places and Southway Housing Trust to develop the site who have shared their initial vision for a sustainable, community-led residential development for the land .

Louis and Paula took control over the neglected former miners wash house in 2012 and have spent the last 10 years transforming the building into the vibrant community hub that it is today. Louis and Paula took over the building which had no water or electricity and have since, with the help of friends and volunteers, revitalised it. They run the organisation along with 8 volunteers who manage the café, events, and weekly clubs they host. As the organisation expands, they require outdoor decking which we are looking to design.
The Miner’s centre was formally used as a pit head bath for Moston Colliery. It was used for miners to clean after working in the Moston Colliery. The coal mines were closed in 1950 and the building became used for a working man’s club until it was left derelict and neglected of years. In 2012 the building was repurposed and turned into a multifunctional community hub which entertains and educates hundreds of people within the community. They host a series of workshops and events to improve to social inclusion within the area. There is a café and bar which hosts music events and there is a cinema and gym in the back. The project started as a place for people with mental health issues but has since become a refuge for anyone within the community.

Infinity is working in partnership with the community in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester on a project called Infinity Initiatives Football Club. Infinity was founded in 2015 to assist persons who were caught in the "revolving door" of support, moving in and out of agencies or falling between ever increasing thresholds. Soon after, they expanded the team members, offering various services and Infinity as part of the platform for the community, particularly across Greater Manchester and North Wales. The members comprise an experienced specialist and multi-skilled team associated with volunteers and clients. The main strategic aim is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for individuals and to offer bespoke support without timeframes and thresholds.

Architectural interests: I am interested in information about the system's functionality, data structures, interfaces, processing logic, performance characteristics. Throughout my architectural school, I have tried to make a conscious effort to approach design as a process rather an end product which has in turn inspired me to always try to look for the most holistic and cognitive solution to the design problem. In practice I worked on various large scale residential and commercial buildings.

Architectural interests: I am interested in place-making practices, looking at how a queered view of architecture embodies an intersectional approach to design. In practice I worked on sensitive residential extensions to listed barns and bespoke house renovations in Cheshire. I enjoy working with light, shadow, material and texture in order to create specific spatial qualities for specific user experiences.

Dissertation: How have post-‘Thatcherism’ housing and planning policies contributed to the UK housing crisis that is evident today? A case study of Manchester City Centre.
Architectural interests: I am interested in intersectional participatory design approaches that are focused on producing quality spaces for communities to thrive. I believe in engagement practices, over consultation, and like to embed this into the design process from the very beginning. In my Part 1 placement I worked on several community schemes and social housing refurbishments, employing retrofit first perspectives to maintain the important fabric and character of existing buildings.
Spare time: I’m an outdoors person who enjoys hiking, cycling, and camping. I also enjoy attending music gigs, exploring local book shops, and making pancakes 😊
As a group of 5, we are collaborating with the Chorlton Traders Association to address vacant spaces in Chorlton to start their regeneration with temporary architecture. We will be mapping out these vacant spaces and derelict pieces of the urban grain like buildings, shutters, electrical boxes etc; creating an argument for why a rapid intervention is needed. We’ve planning a variety of workshops, including working in-situ, giving opportunities to brush up on research abilities, surveying, AutoCAD, model making, Photoshop and Sketchup skills.
We kicked off our project with a day on site! Alan - our collaborator from the Chorlton Traders Association - gave us an insightful tour around our area of Chorlton. We identified the abandoned and derelict spaces we will focus on and chatted about the opportunities which introducing temporary use will unlock. It was great to have a chance to experience the atmosphere of the place and feel so close to the tight-knit community. We’re so excited to be working in Chorlton!!!
Students involved in this project will have the opportunity to develop a diverse range of skills, including project management, artistic, design, digital, communication, collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, and research and analytical skills.
You will be working with both digital and manual approaches while designing the community bus. Digital softwares that we will be looking at are: SketchUp, AutoCad, InDesign, Photoshop and Enscape. We will be producing illustrative visuals, graphics, sketches, and drawings to communicate our ideas and potential opportunities for the community bus to our collaborator for them to proceed with bringing the project to life.
Through this project, students will be familiarised with the concept of adaptive reuse, socially productive spaces and slow architecture.
Students will gain experiences in developing a website interface and working with our project partner. Through their involvement in the project, students can improve their communication and leadership skills by taking on different roles within the project and workshop activities.
Hard Skills: SketchUp, AutoCad, InDesign, Photoshop, Enscape, Hand Sketching
Soft Skills: Teamwork, Problem solving, Communication, Adaptability, Critical thinking, Time management and Interpersonal Skills
The goal of this project is to transform an old bus into a flexible moving community bus and a mobile art gallery, library, and multi-purpose space for all to use and enjoy. Alongside this, an accompanying digital resource in the form of an app will be created to support the work of the mobile space and act as a tracker to provide the community with the exact location of the bus for future community events. The project's community is centered around Greater Manchester, working to unite communities that have been previously torn apart.
Through the provision of a safe space, the project aims to reach a wider audience, focusing on art as a means of supporting mental wellbeing and empowering individuals to take control of their futures. The project will provide a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing within communities across Greater Manchester.
The expected output of the project is a set of visualizations for the bus project and a digital portal interface to connect people through the mobile community hub.
