Hi I’m Miwa, from Japan and did my undergrad at Tokyo Metropolitan University.
I’m in the Architecture and Adaptive Reuse course. I especially like building retrofit. I'm excited about working on this project with new group mates in MSA Live.
Lymm Hall is situated in the heart of the historic village of Lymm, Cheshire. Many of the local residents and
heritage organisations care deeply about preserving the hall, which has a history of more than 400 years on this
site. Beyond the residents of Lymm, this project is of interest and importance to groups invested in sustainable
building and heritage preservation, such as the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings (SPAB),
Historic England, The Greater Manchester Retrofit Accelerator, and Association for Environmentally Conscious
Building (AECB), and Passivhaus Trust.
Our collaborator ‘FOR TYLDESLEY’ are a foundation, involved in the heritage action zones programme: a national initiative aimed at revitalizing historic high streets across the UK. Through its involvement, ‘FOR TYLDESLEY’ is contributing to the improvement of the high street, creating a more attractive, engaging and vibrant environment for people to live, work, and spend time in the town. The programme is being funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, with additional support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and is being run by Historic England. The High Streets Heritage Action Zones Programme is centered around three main components, including physical works to buildings, cultural activities and events, and local community involvement. Through these strands, the programme aims to support the repair and reinstatement of lost features of historic buildings, facilitate cultural activities and events to celebrate the history of the high street, and provide a platform for local communities to have a say in shaping the future of their high street. FOR TYLDESLEY's involvement in this initiative underscores its commitment to the revitalization of high streets and its dedication to improving the quality of life for local communities.

Before it all kicks off in May, we got together with our lovely collaborator Louise who showed us the centre. We got talking about the main areas that need some compassionate upgrading, meeting some local users of the facility, the volunteering staff and even got to witness the space being used for an English class. Today gave us a great insight into the way the centre operates, and we are really looking forward to getting stuck in!
Project Aims:
- To give students, both participating and overseeing, an opportunity to partake in a live project that challenges them to think differently about how a design can be presented to both a community and to financial investors.
- To connect with the staff and users of a successful community centre and to design with a set of real actors and needs.
- To create a proposal that maximises the functionality of the community centre that is conscious of budget, but at the same time is expressive and effective.
- To understand the reality of project phasing, and how each phase influences each other to create a smooth and helpful project timeline.
- To enjoy these two weeks of active, engaging design. To experiment with alternative techniques and to explore what you enjoy as an architect!
Project Outputs:
- A realistic, effective proposal to rearrange the internal layout of the centre, to rethink the landscaping around it, and to think ahead to potential future developments to extend BCC Salford’s community and demographic outreach.
- Plans, section, and elevation drawings to formally communicate the proposal to potential financial investors and for use in planning applications and to develop for future building regulation proposals.
- A financial estimate of the works to help create a funding application.
- Lots of visuals to express the project’s concept. Will this be a set of 3D model renders? A video flythrough? An expressive video adverts? A set of massing models? Perhaps an intersectional combination of the above?
- Two presentations to deliver your proposal. The first to refine an initial draft proposal in a practise-like open design discussion, and the second to sell your project as a fully presented project.

The main agenda of this project is to create an exploratory play space for children to have a first-hand experience with nature at Moston Brook. Located close to a school, it becomes an ideal location for kids to explore nature. We will be developing a masterplan for the wider area, but also working on-site to create pathways, bridges and locally sourced wicker dens for children to play with.
During our 2 action weeks we will be producing a design response to the site and brief, but we would also like to use this time to help you develop skills you wish to learn. This could be general design/ site planning principles, digital or physical modeling, sketching, collaging, or rendering, or preparing presentations. We will use our individual strengths to help you develop your skills, and hopefully in group working, we will learn some skills from you as well!
Our next posts are a series of introductions to the 5th years individually. If anything here sparks your interest, or you have any questions, please get in touch!
Moston Brook has a vast variation in habitats that include marshy grasslands, woodlands and reed beds. It has become an oasis for wildlife to escape the bustle of the city. The rare wildlife that can be seen here are mink, snipes and kestrels. During our site visits, we came across longtails, robins, bluetits, jackdaws, goldfinches, magpies, sparrows and blackbirds. At the end of this project, we intend to continue to boost the biodiversity at the brooks. We plan to create bird boxes to help create a safe atmosphere for the birdlife in the site.
Kingdom Life currently resides in this church and community centre, in Old Trafford. In our initial visit here we toured the building and grounds, and could quickly see the care and effort that the community have put into the site so far, and the ambition for the masterplan we will be developing in the 2 action weeks.
Site Address: Kingdom Life, Chorlton Rd, Old Trafford, Stretford, Manchester M16 7WQ
The site is a sloping terrain with dirt, clay and cobble stones that cover approximately 400 m2. It requires multi-functional structures that can host a variety of activities, including pavilions, installations, and other forms of art. The proposed design aims to create a space that is open to people of all ages and abilities to explore their potential creativity.
Skills that you will learn:
In the two weeks together, you will have the chance to develop an understanding of various core architecture software. Throughout the project, we will be engaging in collaging, perspective illustrations, and orthographic drawings, through which we see an opportunity to teach you the various aspects in the design workflow.
Aside from the digital components, this project will allow you to engage in experimental model-making, sketching and illustrations, as a process to explore and test ideas. The project will provide an opportunity to research and develop an understanding into sustainable design interventions, focusing on growing pavilions and temporary installations.
To top it off, a presentation with our lovely client will be a great chance for pitching and presenting, with the possibility of being involved in on-site construction that may happen separately in the summer.
Social Impact:
The Rural Art Hub has nurtured a community by engaging in art through various experimental and playful means. The development looks to elevate this nurturing and to further provide a platform of growth particularly for the children who visit the Mothershippon. The Rural Art Hub has a focused mission towards sustainable living and finding creative solutions towards a better future, and we look to amplify this mission by focusing on how our interventions can have a lasting influence on sustainability through upcycling and adaptive interventions.
We encourage the use of a wide range of mediums for the presentation of our design proposal. These are the main skills we possess, however we would encourage you to engage with the project from a personal level and create a proposal that is able to speak not only financial investors, but to the community that the project is catering to. Alternative mediums such as photography, painting, performances and other forms of expressions are encouraged to help create an engaging project that everyone enjoys.
This was our initial meeting with Aaron, Sam and Nigel where we discussed who are Kingdom Life, who are we as students, and our collective goals for this MSA Live project. After meeting the group, we all found that our collaborators’ enthusiasm and energy was infectious, and we are super excited to work on this project together!
Action Plan -
To summarise our plan for the action weeks, we will be organising a site visit to engage with the young people from Gorse Hill Studios in the first week. We will be working with them on sketches/ collages to get an idea of what they imagine the garden space to be. Both the temporary and permanent proposals will be further developed after the site visit to adapt to their needs. We will then be working with computer softwares for general arrangement drawings and digital models. A physical model will also be built for the temporary prototype.
