Site & Client Visit

The Trafford Music Service provides opportunity for children across Trafford to learn how to play music, whether that be orchestral or popular. The Service teaches more than 1000 children, with 400 more on the waiting list. That, as well as 1000’s of instruments, means the Service is starting to outgrow its home.

The Service is excited to work with the MSA to develop a scheme that can support their success. This LIVE group will have the opportunity to visit the home of the Service, the Claremont Centre, and work collaboratively to create a scheme for practice and storage spaces, while developing skills through physical model-making and digital software.

In preparation to the live project, we have been to visit the site and the client to better understand the spaces we will be working in. You will get to visit these spaces as previously mentioned but this is just a preview to some of the spaces you will be designing!

Skills: Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Sketch-up, Enscape, Lumion

About: Hi, my name is Ollie and i’m a current student of the Continuity atelier on the MArch course. I’m enthusiastic about sustainable design in the modern context which is something I would wish to share with you. That along with an eye for detail are two main drivers of my creative process.

I did my undergrad at Manchester school of architecture in the Continuity atelier so the transition to masters has been easier. I have worked at an award winning practise in Manchester for a year and a half before returning to complete my masters now.

Outside of architecture i’m very into sport playing multiple different ones on a weekly basis.

We conducted a case study in the afternoon. We explored the organizational arrangements and stage positions of the orchestra. We also conducted preliminary verification of the feasibility update for the expansion of the existing auditorium.

In the morning, members of the group travelled together to trafford music service to conduct venue research. The group discussed remodelling options with staff and used a laser range finder to map data in the auditorium as well as storage spaces.

In the late afternoon, we had some initial practice with the feasibility of expanding the auditorium, experimenting with scale at the pre-expansion site to get a better idea of the overall size. Laying the foundation for modelling later.

By creating models, BA students can experience the scale of architecture and begin to conceptualize preliminary design ideas.

In the afternoon we completed a 1:20 scale model of the storage room, studied the dimensions of the various musical instruments, and generated a preliminary plan for the renovation of the storage space.

On Friday we continued to delve deeper into the design portion of the project and explored the adaptive reuse portion of the building, examining the meta and structures that can be preserved around the site.

A new week has begun!
During the first two days of this week, members of our group continued to refine the design feasibility and created new structural models. They drew technical floor plans and promptly summarized and optimized any issues that arose during the process.

On Wednesday we continued developing the sketch model for the storage rooms, and refining the extension ideas for the final presentation on Friday. Diagrams and images include construction details for the shelving designs, and the interior and exterior visuals for the concert hall.

On Thursday, we used digital drawings for the final plan, renderings and elevations. We also worked on the overall design content and logic in preparation for the upcoming presentation to the client.
