Path team had first site visit to the town hall project. It was an informative day that we meet the project member and acquire the site context of apprenticeship in the town hall project. After the visit, we have a deeper understanding in the history of old town hall and its identity to Manchester. It helps to better shape the approach for attracting potential apprentices to the town hall which will be break down into certain process of planning and the session plan of intensive week.
PATH stands for Project Apprenticeship at Town Hall.
We are aiming to introduce the refurbishment of the town hall project to potential apprentices that are attracting people from all backgrounds and ages. The continuing problem is how to draw the attention of new apprentices although there is profound culture and historical background attached to the town hall. So, the project is considered using the significance of heritage to capture the interest of people who are living in Manchester.
The inclusive way of delivering the town hall legacy is a key component to embody the diversity of culture and it is creating social equality that is providing an opportunity to employ people from all corners of Manchester.
PATH team is collaborating with the City council of Manchester and a list of sub-contractors are involved along with the project. We are delivering the project together with the support from the undergraduate student who would produce different outputs in the different form of communications, such as social media, flyers, posters, etc.
Site visits would be carried out to explore the context of the project.

In the first week, we plan to interact with the children of Manchester and Shenzhen to understand the children's outlooks. Conducting an online workshop for the children where they can display their imagination and creative views of what the city means to them. Which will be incorporated during the design development stages in week 2.
During the 2-week project, we will develop your skills with additional digital, physical, and social skills whilst working through the various stages of design in producing the final output of a proposal for the client.
We aim to enhance your design skill and presentation through various design iterations whilst working with children during the conceptual stages, resulting in the representation of high-resolution renders through a child’s perspective.

Workshops are held to develop drawing and modelling skills digitally and physically. Software used consist of AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop and Indesign. Working with students from Didsbury High School will also allow young people at different stages to learn from each other and to work with each other. Presentations will enable students to share ideas and take inspiration from different backgrounds.
The Architecture School for Children (TASC) are working with students from MSA’s annual programme of student-led live projects, along with Year 8 students from Didsbury High School. We, as young people, will co-design a mobile gallery, in addition to a workshop space, to form a creative space for young people.
Over the past 18 years, TASC has worked with children and communities to bring together people and the wider community to view their environment in a creative persepctive. They aim to develop people’s creative talents from a young age, help children to form lifelong relationships with the community and the city, and raise aspirations of young people to create healthy and happy communities. They have also partnered with organisations (MMU, UoM, RIBA etc.) to engage with architecture students to achieve their aims.
Didsbury High School has a cohort of talented Year 8 students who are eager to learn about architecture. The students are keen to learn and develop new skills about drawing, designing and model making.

Martenscroft Nursery School and Children's centre are an inner-city nursery school in Hulme providing high quality holistic services for children. They work in collaboration with families and partners to address the inequalities that their children and families face. Examples of this are poor and inadequate housing, health (obesity, asthma, poor mental health and well-being) and a below national average of children reaching a good level of development at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
We will be working in close collaboration with them during the action weeks and engaging with the children and their families to explore their desired outcomes for the project. We will also be working at the school to build the 1:1 prototype.
Whilst the two weeks will used to produce design responses of the brief, we would also like to use this time to help you develop skills you wish to learn. Whether it is designing, digital or physical modelling, we will use of individual strengths in architecture to help you develop your skills as a way to represent an impactful social project.
Social change is at the heart of Chorlton Bike Deliveries. They see delivering on bikes as a powerful tool, to offer a free community service, fight food poverty, offer paid work, all whilst protecting the environment. In promoting cycling as sustainable alternative to cars, Chorlton Bike Deliveries aims to reduce carbon emissions and instead create a healthy environment in which the people and children of the community can safely walk, cycle and play in. Therefore, Chorlton Bike Deliveries seek to find like-minded individuals who are passionate in making a social change that has positive impact on the community of Chorlton through design.
Chorlton Bike Deliveries is a non-for-profit cooperative deeply rooted in Chorlton, proudly promoting cycling as a sustainable alternative to vehicles, all whilst serving the local community. The 20 riders that form this cooperative not only deliver bulky groceries to those that are vulnerable but also help locally owned, independent shops and businesses. As if this isn’t enough! Whilst Chorlton Bike Deliveries support the local community and their local economy, the cooperative thrive in protecting the environment. As Chorlton Bike Deliveries successfully expand, they aspire to provide an engaging space that supports the local community but also educates the people of the community the benefits of cycling.
MUD (Manchester Urban Diggers) is a non-profit social enterprise, established in 2019, dedicated to find solutions to existing problems with the local food systems, as a response to an increasing demand for growing services across Manchester and beyond.

MUD is committed to developing projects and creating employment opportunities for our volunteers, as well as providing free services and events for the community.
We are MUD Buddy, a student led team collaborating with Manchester Urban Diggers (MUD).
We will be helping them design a new Men’s Shed structure, including a workshop and new storage unit in Platt Fields market garden, Fallowfield.
Our collective aim is to use workshops and community gardens to create a safe space for men to interact and open up to each other. At MUD Buddy we value mental health and strive to make healthier and happier environments for everyone.
Come join us if you have the same values and would enjoy two weeks of design, workshops, gardens (and sun?)!

Re-purposed as a centre for making and mending, The Boiler House used to be a district power station just a mile from the middle of Manchester. Social enterprise Sow the City signed a 12-year lease on the building and made it the site of a new social community. The Boiler House aims to provide free and low-cost use of tools, equipment and workshop space, to act as a catalyst for people to reach their potential. They also run a variety of skill workshops for the community, including a repair café, held on the last Saturday each month, where people can bring damaged or broken items and have experts help to fix them for free. It’s not just about fixing things, but also about reducing waste and building a community. Such activities could help to provide skills for employment, improve health and wellbeing, develop a circular economy, and promote gender and race equality.

SOCIAL IMPACT
Degrowth is a social and economic movement critiquing the paradigm of economic growth. We can’t continue building how we always did, the time is now to make a statement. The only sustainable growth is degrowth. Our main purpose here at the boiler house is to provide positive social impact through improving mental health and wellbeing through creating and making. We bring members of the community together regardless of gender, age, or race. We aim to combat social isolation, improve confidence, and learn new transferable skills in a safe, welcoming environment.
They are the Debdale Breast Cancer Dragonboating team, every Saturday morning they meet at the Debdale outdoor centre and paddle on the reservoir. Founded in 2012 under the Paddlers for Life banner, they enjoy weekly exercise where we don't need to talk or dwell on cancer, but look at what life has to offer and give each other emotional support. It's about having fun and reaching out for the normal after treatment. They often enjoy tea and coffee afterwards and get on well as a community.
Their activity is not only limited to dragon boating, as they often go on walks, sailing, kayaking and other social events. They are just one of over 200 dragonboat teams dedicated to supporting breast cancer survivors, as the exercise required for dragonboating is safe and therapeutic for those undergoing treatment
