In the first week of the project, the participants will focus on research and concept designs after the site visit. In the second week the participants with be placed into groups to work together to further explore and develop these ideas. They will be encouraged to explore their designs through model making and sketches. At the end, we will collate and produce a presentation that the participants will present to our external collaborators.

Health and wellbeing in relation to physical and mental health is the main focus of our project, in an area where there are many people living on a very low income, who are less likely to be physically active. The area has issues with social isolation, mental health and addiction issues. Our project is supporting local residents to get involved in gardening to support mental and physical health with personalised gardening support and creative approaches, supporting local community gardening leaders to build their capacity, supporting local residents to feel more pride in their neighbourhood and to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.
Waymarking C.I.C. is working in partnership with community garden leaders in Miles Platting in East Manchester on a project called Seeds of Joy (SOJ). This is a place-based community regeneration programme connecting/enhancing green spaces for health and wellbeing. SOJ is supporting local residents on low incomes to get involved in community gardening/to spend time in gardens for physical and mental health/ grow food to eat/enjoy nature and socialise in an outdoor community space.

The other one in the duo behind Make Space for Girls, Imogen Clark was a lawyer for many years, before leaving the law for opportunities in the charity sector. A life long feminist, Imogen studied for a post graduate certificate in gender studies at Birkbeck, University of London, which reinforced her belief that if we want to change the unfairness we see around us, we need to campaigning for structural change.
One of the duo behind Make Space for Girls, Susannah Walker is an author and former TV producer, who was outraged when she realised that not only had her local council only provided outdoor facilities for teenage boys, but they didn’t propose to do anything about it either.
THE TEAM
Our team is comprised of a group of six: two collaborators and four Master of Architecture students.Make Space for Girls was set up by Susannah Walker and Imogen Clark. The students are comprised of Sally Ho, Hanjun Kim, Reeni Dzulqanian, and Writushree Saha.
THE COLLABORATORS
Where most parks, play equipment and public spaces for older children and teenagers are male dominated, with an unlawful lack of consideration of space intended for femme occupation, Make Space for Girls campaigns for public spaces designed with girls in mind.
Research & Analysis: case studies that implement a feminist intervention on public parks would be investigated, and a framework would be derived framework to form the basis of the intervention to be applied to our local park. To tailor this framework to a local context, the opinions and ideas of local teenage girls will be collected to take into consideration.
Mapping & Sketching: A site visit will be arranged to the park, and a talk held by a member of the council will showcase the considerations the local council will have to account for in a project of this nature.
Modelling Dioramas: We have two sets of desired outputs for the project: individual investigative dioramas modelling concepts to be included in the final proposal, and a collective diorama representing the agreed interventions that could be applied to the local park
The social impact of this project is focused on Gender Equality as well as Good Health and Well being. Our work will contribute to ending discrimination against women and girls. Better access to parks for teenage girls provides opportunities to increase activity levels, vital to setting healthy patterns of activity for later life, reducing premature mortality and promoting mental health and well being. In addition, our work will contribute to providing universal access to safe, inclusive, green and public spaces, in particular for women and children.
Part of the vision is to create a social impact that would principally consist of the creation of collaborative living and eating arrangements for older people. The aim is to allow residence to age actively in a mutually supportive environment but also contribute to sustainable cities and communities by releasing under-occupied family-sized homes. Furthermore, the scheme will ultimately contribute to the realisation of savings in health and social care costs.
Furthermore, the scheme will help bring isolated and potentially lonely people into a supportive, community based environment in which they can maintain their independence at the same time. Residence will be also able to find assistance from internal and external groups to support their wellbeing and mental health needs and so continue to thrive.
The MUCH team are active, values-based elders and the results of the live project will hopefully recruit likeminded people to collaborate with MUCH to bring their vision into reality.
The skills within our project can be developed upon or learnt from scratch as we will provide small workshops on Photoshop, Indesign and 3D digital modelling at the start of the two weeks. We will always be on campus too if anybody needs to ask us for any help while carrying out their tasks for the project. If you are confident in any one of the skills on this poster then we encourage you to join our team as you can develop your skills and learn new ones as you work with us.
For the 2 weeks will have a small team to work on the digital model and video walk through. However, we will also be making lots of creative conceptual images and story boards for potential residents, whether that be by hand drawing or by using photoshop to create fun diagrams, collages and renders.
If this sounds like something, you will enjoy doing then please join our team!
MUCH, Manchester Urban Co-Housing
MUCH is made up of a group of individuals who have a collective vision for a sustainable co-housing scheme within South Manchester where people over 50 can move to when they feel they no longer want to live alone, have potentially retired or are just looking for a home within a close-knit community. The scheme will encourage interaction and social activities between its occupants, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere to call home.
The scheme will support independent living by providing self-contained apartments but also community areas and co- workspaces where members can socialise and host events. Mutual support and additional external support will allow members to sustain an independent lifestyle and support individuals’ well-being so that they can continue to thrive. The design of the scheme will also ensure that homes and shared indoor/outdoor spaces will be able to meet members future mobility or other needs.

We are working with Hulme Community Garden Centre to re-design a children’s mound at the garden.
Promoting sustainability: Re-design of the children’s mound would involve the use of existing materials on-site to create play structures. The project also involves using permaculture design methods to create these play structures.
Promote Well-being: Re-design of the children’s mound at the garden would encourage children to engage in physical activities in a natural environment. The project would aim to create a play area to stimulate children’s imagination.
Re-design of the children’s mound involves promoting horticulture and involving local community.
Within the 2 week project, we will help you learn new digital, physical and social skills in addition to helping you improve on any software or physical skills you may already have in regards to architecture.
Furthermore, we will be going through different design stages to help produce a final output of a construction manual for the client. We aim to help to develop a design all the way from a concept stage to a final design which will include construction detailing and modelling (physical and digital.)
The 2 Week Program also hopes for you to explore interaction with the local community, the client and being able to use different mediums to convey your ideas.
