Course: MArch 1
Atelier: Infrastructure Space

After completing my undergraduate studies in China and gaining my Part 1 experience through professional practice, I developed a strong interest in how architecture responds to real contexts. An internship in the Nujiang region was especially influential, deepening my understanding of the relationship between nature, landscape, and the built environment. I am currently part of the Infrastructure atelier, exploring architecture through systems, public space, and ecological thinking. Through MSA Live, I am excited to work with the Canal & River Trust on a Grade II listed heritage project and further develop my skills in collaborative design.

Hi, I’m Diona, currently in my first year of the MArch, having graduated from Manchester School of Architecture in 2025. I grew up as an Albanian in North Macedonia before moving to Manchester for my undergraduate studies, which shaped my interest in how architecture carries history, identity, and cultural memory across different places. During my third year, I completed work experience in a conservation practice, which strengthened my focus on adaptive reuse, historic building repair, and conservation-led design.
Outside of architecture, I enjoy travelling, photography, and sketching the places I visit (and eating lots and lots of good food), as these experiences influence how I observe buildings, streets, and everyday urban life. I’m really looking forward to working with the team and developing ideas together through the project.

Hi, I am Muchen, a Architecture and Adaptive Reuse student from China.

During my undergraduate architectural studies, I mastered Rhino and SU modeling skills, D5 rendering skills, and gained a basic understanding of Grasshopper. I enjoy making handcrafted models and have tried working with various materials for models.

The oversaturation of the Chinese construction industry has led me to consider and act on a shift towards the professional direction of reusing existing buildings. Now my research focuses on the reuse and adaptive transformation of abandoned buildings, and the preliminary research based on community and geographical context is also very important in this field.

My knowledge of South Sudan comes from a relative who was a member of the Chinese peacekeeping force stationed there. I was deeply impressed by the destruction of architecture and even social culture in conflict areas. This has made me very interested and motivated to help with the reconstruction of post-war areas and the reconnection of culture and architecture.

3/2/26

SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION

Today we had our first meeting as a group getting to know each other and where our journeys have taken us so far. Each of us have varied backgrounds and are at different points in life which was useful in seeing what our skills are best adapted to. We made sure to get everyone involved in design ideas for our initial task of producing a poster for our project, which was very successful combining multiple ideas into one.

Before meeting with our collaborator Mark Busby who works in The Counselling and Family Centre, we wanted to have an aim on what we would ask him to get a better understanding of the purpose in redesigning the café is. Having this information going forward will help us move forward with concepts for a poster and later ideas for the design of the café itself.

We hope to plan a site visit within the next week, meeting with Mark again and getting a sense for the building and what could come from this. For later tasks in the project, we hope to join together again to create some amazing work as a team.

Habari!

My name is Angela Ndori. I’m originally from Tanzania and grew up mainly in the UK, and I’m a Foundation year architecture student with a strong passion for vernacular architecture and sustainable design in the built environment. I previously worked in Kenya with a company focused on green housing and sustainable agriculture, where I gained practical insight into environmentally responsible design. I’m especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of architecture, exploring how it connects with sociopolitics and history to shape communities and spaces. I’m eager to keep learning, collaborating, and developing design approaches that respect culture, climate, and context while contributing to a more sustainable future through thoughtful, people-centred architecture as I grow professionally.

This project with our collaborator, United Didsbury Methodist Church, directly reflects these interests. It offers an opportunity to apply my passion for sustainable and community-focused design to a real setting, where architecture can meaningfully support inclusivity, accessibility, and environmental responsibility. I’m particularly excited to contribute ideas that help transform the church into a more flexible and welcoming space that serves both its congregation and the wider community.

MArch 1 - Ziyu Liu

Hello everyone, I'm Ziyu Liu, currently a first-year Master of Architecture student. I'm from China and grew up in central China.

I completed my undergraduate studies at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in a 2+2 program, spending two years at the University of Liverpool. This experience gave me insights into architecture from both China and the UK, and allowed me to experience the differences that two distinct cultural backgrounds bring to the architectural industry. After graduating, I spent a year adjusting, interning at a design institute and traveling to various places to see different landscapes and architecture. This year helped me understand myself better, ultimately leading to my decision to pursue further studies in architecture.

Leisure spaces are a direction I haven't explored in depth before, and I'm very interested in designing public spaces where people gather. I look forward to collaborating with the Life Leisure team on a new challenge!

- Creating a Poster

Our poster began through a series of quick hand sketches, where we explored composition, scale and how architectural forms could sit alongside people-focused imagery. Early on we discussed colour palette carefully, choosing tones that felt both local and welcoming, drawing from familiar materials and street colours found across Wigan and Leigh.

We then brought these ideas together digitally, layering the sketches, textures and graphics into a single composition. Rather than presenting a finished architectural proposal, the poster reflects the character of the existing built environment while emphasising collaboration. The aim was to visually communicate a shared effort, showing how small contributions, conversations and actions can collectively support and strengthen the Wigan and Leigh community.

Group 13: Meeting the Client

During an initial meeting with our collaborator, we met Dave Payne, a Board Member at Withington Baths. Dave provided a detailed overview of the Baths’ history and outlined the broad range of possibilities we could explore through this project.

A key element of the brief he emphasised was the need for a new gym, to be delivered as an extension to the existing building. He encouraged us to think beyond a single-use addition, suggesting a mixed-use approach that could incorporate social housing, event spaces, and communal facilities, among other opportunities.

To help contextualise these ambitions, Dave shared previous design proposals, which ranged from modest two-storey interventions to more ambitious four- and five-storey schemes spanning the entire site.

Group 13: First Site Visit

During our first site visit, we began by exploring the baths independently, taking time to observe and experience the space as both visitors and Withington locals might. This initial walk-through allowed us to understand the complex circulation in and around the site.

We were then invited on a guided tour by a member of staff, who generously enriched our visit with historical insights and anecdotes. Her commentary helped us appreciate not only the architectural character of the baths but also its longstanding role within the community.

One of the highlights was the opportunity to go behind the scenes. We explored the basement level beneath the pools, gaining a deeper understanding of the building’s operational infrastructure. We also gathered in the courtyard (the proposed site for the new extension), where we began to imagine how much needed additional space might integrate with the existing fabric.

We were surprised by the building's diverse range of users: students attending a yoga class, young children taking part in early-years swimming lessons, and professionals making use of the co-working space. This inclusivity underscored the baths’ continued relevance, not simply as a leisure facility, but as a dynamic community hub.

BA 1 - Ivan Broussy

Hi, I'm Ivan and I'm in my first year of BA in Architecture. I'm French, but over the course of the past 19 years I've lived in Moscow, Barcelona and Singapore. My eyes were first opened to Architecture when I was 8 years old, living in Barcelona, and my parents showed me the plans of the renovation of our home that they were undertaking. Looking at these plans, and being able to track recognise the changes to the spaces that would occur in my home captivated me. From there I didn't look back, and soon became enthralled with the ability to represent space through drawing, and particularly through the use of perspective. As a result, being able to now take part in designing and renovating of the exterior spaces around Life Leisure Avondale into a vibrant community-led social space through the MSA live program is particularly exciting. I am enthusiastic to put my drawing and sketching skills to use, but more importantly, to advance my skills in other areas of Architectural representation such as physical modelling and CAD skills by working closely with the Master students in my group who have far more advanced skillsets.

Day 1- The Icebreaker - 03/02/26

Our first session marked the beginning of our collaboration as a mixed-year team, bringing together BA1 and MArch students. To break the ice, we shared our educational backgrounds, design interests, and individual strengths. This helped us understand what each person could bring to the project, whether that be model-making, CAD, research, graphic communication, or critical thinking, and how we could distribute roles in a way that both builds on our strengths and encourages us to develop new skills.
We then turned our attention to the project brief. Working collectively, we highlighted key themes and unpacked its core objectives, mapping out ideas on a whiteboard to visualise potential directions. This early discussion allowed us to identify priorities, questions, and possible opportunities within the brief.
In preparation for meeting our client, David from Wigan & Leigh Community Charity, we drafted a structured set of questions to ensure our conversation would be focused and productive. To maintain clarity during the meeting, Tom was appointed as spokesperson while others took on note-taking roles, allowing the discussion to flow in an organised and professional way.
The first day focused on establishing a clear direction and ensuring that, as a team, we approached the project with a shared understanding of its aims and context.
Posted 18 Feb 2026 15:39
Yesterday, we met during the scheduled group session and had another productive catch-up. We managed to complete the tasks set earlier that morning and clearly delegate who would be responsible for the four required outputs, due on the 6th of March. We also spent time talking through what the final project might look like and how we can break tasks down as we move towards the exhibition in June. On top of this, we went over the final tweaks for our poster to make sure everything is coming together. Overall, the meeting felt focused but relaxed, and it was good to see how well we’re continuing to work together as a group.

ELLI-ROSE DOUGLAS

Hi, I'm Elli.
I am currently studying my first year of university at Manchester School of Architecture. Throughout my life i have found joy in immersing myself into artistic and creative aspects of life. This early interest heavily influenced my academic path, leading me to study design focused subjects throughout school and college, and now architecture at university. I also pursue creating art and paintings in my own time, as well as a small business creating personalised cards and small items, or sketches.

My hometown of Stockport is one that has been subject to neglect in the past, however now it is getting the attention it needs and is rapidly developing. I hope to bring these revitalising aspects that surround me at home towards this project, turning the site within Wigan and Leigh into one that provokes inspiration to the younger generations, like my home town has had for me!

I’m really excited to be working with Wigan and Leigh Community Charity to help provide genuine value to a community in need of new facilities. Drawing on both my professional and academic experience, I hope to offer fresh external insight into how we can adapt the area’s abandoned spaces and create meaningful places for young people.

Hey! My name is Stephnine (or Steph), I am a BA1 student in Manchester School of Architecture. I chose to study architecture as I love how the evolution of the world can be shown through buildings. Needless to say, I enjoy learning about the history of architecture, and how things have changed through time and I aspire to have a hand in shaping the future. For this project, I am most excited to learn about different customs and cultures in Sudan, using them to lead our creative direction. Loreto College is more than just a school for the students in Sudan; I can’t wait to have a part in such a meaningful project.

Hi, I’m Milia from Malaysia. I completed my undergraduate degree there before coming to MSA. Having studied and lived in different places, I’m interested in how context shapes the way people use and experience spaces. I’m drawn to architecture that focuses on everyday use, and this project is a chance for me to explore how design can make knowledge more open and engaging.

MArch 1 - Maream Merza

Hi, I am Maream Merza currently in my first year of my Masters of Architecture. I grew up between the Netherlands and the Middle East and with that experienced life in architecture on many different scales without realising I was going to choose this path.
I did my undergraduate at UWE Bristol which is very different from the way things run here which makes this course all the more exciting! My 2 years of corporate practice has given me invaluable knowledge on how practices are run and what entails bidding processes in the public sector and also helped figure out where my own architectural interests lie.
Leisure spaces are probably one of my favourite parts of travel when you encounter a place where people are dancing near the River Seine, or walk the High Line, a disused space now full of life and people in New York or even eating ice cream in a plaza in Milan. I’m looking forward to working with the team on what is getting to an exciting start on tackling another one of these unique challenges!

Our session commenced with an attempted dictatorship takeover from a specific group member and a threat of being an observer for the project if their poster wasn't selected. Once the dust settled and the pitchforks had been put down, a vote to decide poster design was carried out and we made our selection. We then met up with the clients Mike and Alexandra, who agreed with our vision for Dandelion church, and helped us develop our ideas further. Rob then joined us for a discussion, that featured a little bit of direction for our project, as well as many, many examples of his own work in which he believed would be of use in our project.

Hi, I’m Luiza a first-year student at Manchester University from Crewe. I have spent the first semester learning a wide range of skills and developing all techniques. I have varying interests such as my love for pencil drawing and reading. I also enjoy sports such as volleyball and netball and occasionally running. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and baking for people. I love how architecture can affect people and how it can be used as a tool for greater change.

For this project I am excited to help create something for a community which will cause a positive change for the children and people living there. I would like to learn various skills from the people around me and try to pass on my skills and ideas to others also.

Hi I’m Laiba! (BA1)

I am currently a student at Manchester school of architecture, and am interested in projects mixed with arts, creativity, and historical value.
I chose to participate in the Withington baths project as it had an ongoing community role and was centred around offering an opportunity to explore adaptive reuse, whilst still respecting the cultural significance

Last week we met with Ben Atha, a Young People’s Worker at Trafford Council, who works closely with Talkshop in Sale, Manchester, to clarify exactly what he wants to achieve from the project and where improvements are needed. After preparing key questions ahead of the meeting, we were able to align on his goals, identify areas to strengthen, and agree on clear next steps. It was a productive conversation that laid a strong foundation for delivering a meaningful proposal for the young people using the service.

We are group 12 and we are rejuvenating the Talkshop in the Trafford Centre, Sale. Since covid, the number of young people visiting the TalkShop has dwindled, and the current proprietors think of the space as out of date. Our mission is to upgrade the main reception area according to the vision of those who regularly access it in hopes of enhancing their experience. An exciting new rebrand would also help in attracting new foot traffic and create some excitement around the space, hopefully increasing awareness and encouraging more people to take advantage of the services.

9 Strangers in a room

Our first meeting on Tuesday, 3rd February, involved discussing potential project names, developing initial poster ideas, and just breaking the ice. Hard Hat Café was the brilliant outcome raised by Samira, with no help at all from ChatGPT. As excited as we were to meet the collaborator, unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances delayed our initial discussions.

The poster team produced a strong range of drafts, and we collectively decided to move forward with Yuxiang’s idea, which emphasised our group’s design intent. We discussed visiting the site, and although we would ideally all like to go, Pendle (East Lancashire) is too far for us each to take the venture out (we’re thinking of sending a small strike team instead).

Since the meeting, Michael from In-Situ has reached out and helped to communicate their expectations, and we’re excited to meet him in person after the February half-term.

//I’m from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but I’ve moved around quite a bit - studying in Shenzhen and London. Being immersed in different cities, buildings, and people shaped how I think about architecture, pushing me toward a more functional and rational approach focused on improving urban issues and everyday spatial experience.
//My favourite thing to get in a cafe is a fruity, acidic, medium-roast filter coffee, or a matcha or fresh juice, depending on the day.

//I grew up in Weihai, Shandong, China. My path to architecture was shaped by a dual passion: I have loved painting since childhood, but I am equally fascinated by the logic of mathematics and physics. During my studies at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, I realized that architecture is the perfect discipline to bridge these interests - it is where artistic sensibility meets scientific rationality.
//My favourite thing to get in a cafe is a classic Iced Latte. I don't have a specific go-to spot, but an Iced Latte is my consistent choice no matter where I am.

//I grew up in Ripon, North Yorkshire (almost in the middle of nowhere), and I think constant exposure to beautiful heritage buildings, fountains abbey in particular, is what led to my interest in architecture.
//My favourite cafe is Tiny Tiny in Newcastle, where a flat white and the huevos rancheros will sort you out on a Saturday morning!

//I grew up in Leicester, East Midlands, and my first inclination to building design was actually through the video game Sims 3! Instead of playing the actual game, I was obsessed with designing the houses which sparked my interest in architecture as a career.
//My favourite cafe is Junction in Manchester, their truffle fries are banging!

//I’m an architectural professional who cares about how buildings affect people and everyday life. I’m interested in how cities grow and how good design, at any scale, can make a real difference. Alongside my work in architecture, I’ve been involved in my local community since the age of 11 through kickboxing, starting as a student and later teaching my own classes. That experience taught me discipline, confidence, and the importance of giving back. I enjoy working with others, learning on the job, and turning ideas into well-built, thoughtful spaces that have a positive impact.

/Oliwia Żytowiecka
//I’m from Poland and grew up in a very touristy coastal town. I think my interest in architecture began when I saw many beautiful old buildings being demolished to make way for new developments, which gradually caused the town to lose its character. At the same time, I was surrounded by a sense of nostalgia from older residents, who often spoke about how special and beautiful the town used to be - a version of it that I unfortunately never experienced myself. That contrast between memory and reality of what has been lost made me more aware of how the built environment shapes identity and belonging. On a lighter note, another huge influence was playing The Sims!
//My favourite café is my close friend’s family’s restaurant, where I’m always greeted with a new coffee or tea to try!

Starting the day with the lecture, we were briefed on risk assessments, budget plans, project timelines and the ethics application. We then had a lunch break and gathered to have a meeting. We first discussed our deadlines and recap the lecture. After completing a draft of the budget plan, we moved on to exploring our individual research conducted from last meeting. Since last meeting, the client has sent us specified sites, so we decided to discuss that further before creating 3 different groups for site visits in a week’s time. Despite narrowing our site during last meeting, we still want to explore the different sites and keep our research wide-ranged. With the dates for the site visits set for 1st of March as the kickstart, we have created a programme for the rest of the project, compromising and respecting each person’s deadlines as promised in our contract, where we also completed the ethics application and the risk assessments.

3/2/26 Client Meeting

Katie & Hilary from The Friends of Worthington Park introduced the proposal:

Site - A quiet orchard between the playground and park edge wall visited by dog walkers, children, and volunteer gardening groups
Funding & Organisation - Finances managed by park treasurer but Friends of the Park fundraise via markets, picnics, quiz nights, scouts events, carols and grants/ material donations
Proposal - Edible plant life, bug hotels and stumperies, visually integrated composting

3/2/26 First meeting

In our first meeting we introduced ourselves to the group and began learning about our site, Worthington Park, and client, The Friends of Worthington Park. As the orchard is not yet shown on park maps, we decided to plan an in-person visit.

Throughout the day we researched precedents, learnt about the current recreational areas and community events, and developed themes for our group name and poster, outlining four keywords: Orchard, Volunteer, Reuse, and Community. These inspired our name concepts (“Apples and Pears” and “Seeds to Seats”), our poster design sketches (pictured above), and our initial Proposal: a layered, staircase-style seating design that integrates reuse, composting, gardening, and community food growth. The
seating and planting systems would be built through volunteer-led DIY processes.

Poster Team Meeting

Following our earlier meetings, the poster team met up for a focused brainstorming session to develop our initial ideas. This session was all about getting our thoughts down, exploring different directions, and beginning to shape how we wanted the poster to communicate our work, whilst considering the research teams site analysis. We sketched rough layout ideas, discussed possible titles, and decided what key information needed to stand out on the poster. As the session continued, we assigned roles based on each person’s strengths, with some focusing on design and others on refining the written content. This helped us to organise our work clearly and move forward with a shared plan.

This day marks our first meeting with each other, upon arrival group 24 got to discuss our different backgrounds, experiences, strengths and weaknesses to help better understand the group’s dynamic and workflow. We then shared potential group names, poster ideas, our interpretations of the brief provided and briefly researched the site’s context. Our following meeting with the collaborators was the highlight of the day as we got to thoroughly understand what is expected from us while getting to know John and Michelle, who are well settled in the industry. From then, we knew this collaboration with them would only teach us more.

Group 22 met this afternoon for our second check-in meeting. After a quick catch-up and taking some time to admire the progress of our poster team, we discussed our agenda to ensure we covered everything we needed to. We began by delegating responsibility for the timeline, ethics form, and risk assessment to specific team members and clarified the expectations for each task. While planning the timeline, we discussed how our individual schedules aligned and how they fit alongside BA1, MAAR, and MA1 commitments. We also cleared up any confusion surrounding the ethics form and risk assessment to ensure everyone felt confident moving forward. Budget planning was then addressed, and we decided to finalise spending decisions at a later date. However, we agreed that the budget would likely go toward office supplies and that we would enquire about additional funding for transportation, as many of us are excited about visiting the site in person. After discussing logistics and practicalities, we shifted our focus to the main part of the meeting designing our engagement activities. We identified the key groups interacting with the site, particularly school children and general visitors. Our collaborator noted that many museum visitors already know about the space and what to expect, prompting us to carefully consider how to gather meaningful insights. We explored different strategies to collect useful information. Ideas included asking participants to rank exhibition spaces based on accessibility and enjoyment to help us identify layout issues, and having teachers map the paths students take during visits to better understand movement through the space. Reviewing the examples list, we found ourselves drawn to more creative methods, as they tend to avoid predictable or surface-level responses. At the same time, we discussed the limitations of more traditional approaches, such as surveys, and considered ways to make them more effective. To conclude, we agreed on our deliverables for both this week and next, and we set a date for our site visit. Overall, it was a very productive and focused meeting.

Today marked our first session as a group. We started with some icebreaker tasks where we introduced ourselves and our interests within architecture. We then began studying and interpreting our brief before discussing important questions we would later need to ask our collaborator.

Later we started to divide up tasks, with small groups working on either: poster design, blog or project description. Before the end of our session, we shared what we had come up with and any ideas we had within our groups.

Hi, I’m Wanrou Song(Kiki). I'm from China and obtained my bachelor’s degree in architecture there.and I’m interested in sustainable architecture design and hope to work in the field in the future. At the same time, I have a strong interest in how biomaterials can be integrated into architecture. In this project, I hope not only to design an architectural installation that showcases the biological research institute, but also to incorporate biomaterials so that people can directly experience the presence of biology itself through the architecture.

This is my first time working with students from different grades, and I’m really excited about this opportunity.

Personal Paragraph:
Hello, I am Cristina, a BA 1 Architecture student in the MSA. My passion for Architecture started from an early age, observing all the buildings surrounding me and understanding the different architectural types. My experience working in an architectural firm for a short period of time helped me to understand the real purpose and methodology of how to work and communicate your ideas, as an architect.

My deep interest in Architecture; sketching, model making, in combination with my love for volunteering and getting involved in the community, will provide me with skills, drive and enthusiasm for this project. I believe architecture has the responsibility to respond sensitively to its users. Through volunteering and community engagement, I have developed empathy and active listening skills, which I hope will allow me to meaningfully engage with Hyde and understand the needs of the children we are designing for.

I am really excited for our collaboration with Hyde for this project. I have always wanted to design sports facilities and communal spaces, in addition, I’m happy to work with the children and try to meet their needs. I’m inspired by Hyde’s cause and my goal is to meet their needs and wants for this project. Collaborating with MArch students presents a valuable opportunity to observe different design approaches and levels of critical thinking. I am eager to contribute actively while expanding my understanding of the design process through interdisciplinary teamwork. I am particularly interested in how architecture can create inclusive and empowering environments, especially within community and youth-focused projects such as this one.
