Group 10
HYDE COMMUNITY COURTS

This project collaborates with Hyde Young Peoples Enterprise. HYPE are a community charity provide support to young people to develop their skills and provide them the capabilities to participate in society, economically and socially. They do this by finding new and innovative ways to help youths begin their journey into society and the working world. Our task is to help their vision of a new community hub come true; padel courts, a skatepark, and a climbing wall. Through a phased approach, we are transforming the site into a sports complex for the community.

Session 1 – Meet the team & the Collaborators
Hello! We are Group 10. We are collaborating with Hyde Young People’s Enterprise (HYPE) where we are working to create a youth sports complex for the Hyde Community. We are looking forward to getting stuck into this project and exploring our creative ideas to bring a positive change to the community.
In our first session today, we began with an icebreaker! We got to know one another and learnt about our background, architectural interests, hobbies and skills that can contribute to this project. We quickly discovered that putting our skills together will allow us to perform to high standards and create a collaborative working environment for the duration of this project.

Atelier: &rchitecture

Hi! I’m Alex, I'm from North Wales and I'm an March1 student within the &rchitecture atelier here at MSA. I spent the last year at AEW Architects in Manchester and continue to work there 2 days a week alongside my Masters. There I have gained a wide range of skills and experience whilst working on retail architecture. The extremely fast paced nature of the work has helped hone my communication skills alongside time management and quality control.

Looking ahead in my career I have a keen interest in community projects, specifically spaces that serve multiple aspects of the community – something I have been able to explore through my work in the &rchitecture atelier. As an atelier we explore non-standard methods for revitalising and engaging the communities affected by our designs.

I’m looking forward to getting involved in the project with HYPE as it allows me to further explore my interests of working with individuals in the community to create something that serves them as best as possible.

Course: MArch 1
Atelier: CPU

Hi! I’m Batool, an MArch 1 Architecture student in the CPU atelier. With over a year in practice at Associated Architects in Birmingham, I worked on educational and community projects, developing a strong understanding of designing for specific users and, more importantly, designing around people, through DfE standards and SEND school design.

Community projects allowed me to explore accessibility, interiors, civic identity, working within existing contexts, and navigating council constraints and budgets - giving me a grounded understanding of practice beyond education.

That’s what draws me to the CPU atelier. Focusing on Complex Planning and Urbanism, we explore how large-scale urban conditions shape architectural decisions, using iterative and generative computational processes to create resilient, smart, and sustainable buildings that serve people at the urban scale.

MSA Live feels like the perfect bridge between practice and my Master’s - a chance to work with real clients, apply my academic and professional experience, and design something meaningful for Hyde Community Courts that genuinely supports its users and community.

Atelier: Infrastructure Space

Hi, I’m Sofia, a first year MArch student at the MSA, and originally from Limassol, Cyprus. On my year out I practised primarily on residential projects. During this time I developed strong skills in Revit and 3D digital modelling.

I completed my undergraduate degree at Newcastle University, where I explored reuse- retrofit projects, and physical model making. Through these projects I developed a practical approach to formulating design concepts and understanding how architecture can respond to existing contexts.

Within the Infrastructure Space atelier, we focus on data driven mapping and analytical methods to improve community and user experience. I am particularly looking forward to collaborating with Hyde Young People’s Enterprise, contributing to their aim of improving access to sports environments for young people in the community. I am interested in understanding how design can encourage participation, support wellbeing, and make shared spaces feel welcoming and easy to use for everyday activities.

Course: Master of Architecture
Atelier: Praxis
Hey I’m Holly. I started my masters at Manchester School of Architecture this year. I have one year of experience working in a small residential practice in Hertfordshire, working on a range of projects from loft conversions to house extensions to new build homes. During this year, I learnt the importance of communication with clients and how to make architecture personal.
From being a part of the Praxis atelier, where we focus on designing through an intersectional feminist lens, I’ve developed my thinking to create safe and inclusive spaces, focusing particularly on the community.
I have always been interested in working with the community, on projects that benefit those who live there. I am excited to collaborate with Hyde Young Peoples Enterprise on this project, increasing accessibility and availability of youth facilities to the community. Everyone in the community should have access to sports and exercise facilities, and I am excited to improve these for the community in Hyde.

Course: BA 1 Architecture

Personal Paragraph:
Hello, I am Cristina, a BA 1 Architecture student in the MSA. My passion for Architecture started from an early age, observing all the buildings surrounding me and understanding the different architectural types. My experience working in an architectural firm for a short period of time helped me to understand the real purpose and methodology of how to work and communicate your ideas, as an architect.

My deep interest in Architecture; sketching, model making, in combination with my love for volunteering and getting involved in the community, will provide me with skills, drive and enthusiasm for this project. I believe architecture has the responsibility to respond sensitively to its users. Through volunteering and community engagement, I have developed empathy and active listening skills, which I hope will allow me to meaningfully engage with Hyde and understand the needs of the children we are designing for.

I am really excited for our collaboration with Hyde for this project. I have always wanted to design sports facilities and communal spaces, in addition, I’m happy to work with the children and try to meet their needs. I’m inspired by Hyde’s cause and my goal is to meet their needs and wants for this project. Collaborating with MArch students presents a valuable opportunity to observe different design approaches and levels of critical thinking. I am eager to contribute actively while expanding my understanding of the design process through interdisciplinary teamwork. I am particularly interested in how architecture can create inclusive and empowering environments, especially within community and youth-focused projects such as this one.

Session 2 – Engagement activities and necessary documents!

In our second session, we focused on engagement activities and worked through some key documents. To keep things organised, each MArch1 student was given a task, supported by a BA1 or Foundation student. It worked really well - we were able to learn from each other’s strengths while keeping everything moving at a good pace.

The documentation included a Project Timeline, Ethics Application, Risk Assessment, and Budget Proposal. The budget task especially pushed us to think more creatively about engagement. We started brainstorming how we could make our activities interactive and enjoyable for the users of the site, particularly the kids at HYDE Community Courts.

This session helped us understand how much thought goes into planning meaningful engagement, and how important it is to design activities that people actually want to take part in when we head to site!

Session 4 – Engagement Workshop

In Session 4, we visited the HYP Youth Centre in Hyde, Manchester, where we delivered an engagement workshop with the children to better understand their wants and needs for the final project.

Prior to the session, we prepared a series of activities to support this process. These included a questionnaire, a drawing activity, and an interactive mapping exercise using a laser-cut site model with movable pieces to encourage participation, spark conversation, and help the children express their ideas in an accessible and creative way.

We also ensured that all ethical requirements were met in advance of the workshop. This included obtaining the necessary approvals and carrying out risk assessments.

After introducing ourselves to the children and vice versa, enthusiastic discussions developed and ideas began to be shared about how their youth centre could evolve. They confidently expressed their aspirations for the space, describing how they would like it to look, feel, and function which helped us understand how to design for both themselves and future users.

The activities and discussions not only provided valuable insight for the project but also sparked a wider interest in architecture as a potential career, encouraging the children to think about their own future aspirations and possibilities.

Finally, we visited the site in order to understand how the space looks in reality, explore current conditions and begin the design process.

Action Week day 01- 11/05/2026

Today we began Action Week by working out the design and planning for the site, preparing to start the physical model for our presentation. We also researched precedents and explored the materiality of the design.
After lunch, we organized a list of tasks for the day and divided them among the team to maximize efficiency. We completed the context buildings on the model and started modeling the floor plans.
This session helped us realize how teamwork contributes to time management and organization when working towards tight deadlines.

action week day 02- 12/05/26

In this session, we decided to resume the same work pattern as before by dividing tasks.
We had one team working on adding more detail to the site model, such as the surrounding context and landscape elements, while others continued work on the 3D modelling of our site and the technical documents for the building. Alongside this, we made the site/ contextual analysis and focused on bringing everything together for the main presentation and publication.
In addition to these major tasks, we made final refinements to the design poster and reviewed our progress with our collaborators at HYPE.

Action Week day 03 - 13/05/26

In today’s session, we were only two days away from the final presentation, so the team focused on refining and completing the remaining detailed aspects of the project.
For both the physical and digital modelling work, the focus was on refining and developing the remaining details of the project. The physical model involved laser cutting the final building massing pieces and adding more structural detail. At the same time, the 3D model was mostly complete in terms of the site amenities, including the main pitch, landscaping, car park, and surrounding facilities, with the remaining work focused on refining the building model itself and producing the final rendered visuals. The architectural floor plans were also nearly complete, requiring only minor adjustments and final detailing.
In terms of documentation, the presentation had been completed, allowing the team to continue work on organising the publication content. By the end of the session, many of the foundational and technical aspects of the project had been resolved, bringing us significantly closer to the final output.
