Project Description: Petri of Play is a proposed collaboration between MSA Live Group 03 and The University of Manchester, to bring community, nature, learning and play to the area outside Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. Our site is currently tucked away from the main road, disconnected from its surroundings and subject to vandalism. Together, we aspire to create a space for people of all ages to enjoy, somewhere to sit, with planting and interactive educational displays showcasing the work of Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. We hope to collaborate with a local primary school to educate on topics such as biodiversity and climate change, through the medium of play.

This week we met on Wednesday the 11th in MTC to discuss our contract and brainstorm ideas for our poster to best represent our project. Discussion around the table began with a mockery of a poor BA1’s lunch, however developed further into a more in-depth discussion once bourbons and initial poster ideas and sketches were brought to the table. Most of our ideas came with an idea of processing cores and technology, trying to incorporate CORE’s logo into our own poster. Once we signed our lives away on the contract made by a genuine lawyer (only made through nepotism), we agreed to bring a couple of finalised poster ideas to our next session and choose through a vote which one we go with.

Course: Foundation Architecture

My name is Ritchlaine, and I am currently a foundation student at the Manchester School of Architecture. I originally lived in Sunderland before moving to Manchester to pursue my university studies.

During my course, I completed a placement week where I developed my CAD skills using Revit and gained valuable insight into what working in a real-life architecture office is like. This experience helped me better understand professional practice and strengthened my technical abilities.

In my free time, I enjoy being creative, particularly through drawing and model-making as a side hobby. I also love engaging with new communities and meeting new people, as I believe collaboration and conversation are essential parts of both personal and professional growth.

Our project commenced with a series of icebreakers, a great way for us to get to know each other on an architecture and personal level, leading us to discover the groups unanimous decision of coffee over tea.

To figure out how we could work best in collaboration, we followed with analysing our own strengths and weaknesses and giving the opportunity for people to work on factors they enjoy or push themselves and learn from others if they desire.

The final part of the day ended with meeting Mike and hearing more about what he wanted from us to help bring his plans and ideas to reality. We bought up questions and discussed plans moving forward, ending the day with a clear plan and a meeting with Alexandra booked.

Course: Master of Architecture
Atelier: Praxis
Hey I’m Holly. I started my masters at Manchester School of Architecture this year. I have one year of experience working in a small residential practice in Hertfordshire, working on a range of projects from loft conversions to house extensions to new build homes. During this year, I learnt the importance of communication with clients and how to make architecture personal.
From being a part of the Praxis atelier, where we focus on designing through an intersectional feminist lens, I’ve developed my thinking to create safe and inclusive spaces, focusing particularly on the community.
I have always been interested in working with the community, on projects that benefit those who live there. I am excited to collaborate with Hyde Young Peoples Enterprise on this project, increasing accessibility and availability of youth facilities to the community. Everyone in the community should have access to sports and exercise facilities, and I am excited to improve these for the community in Hyde.

Atelier: Infrastructure Space

Hi, I’m Sofia, a first year MArch student at the MSA, and originally from Limassol, Cyprus. On my year out I practised primarily on residential projects. During this time I developed strong skills in Revit and 3D digital modelling.

I completed my undergraduate degree at Newcastle University, where I explored reuse- retrofit projects, and physical model making. Through these projects I developed a practical approach to formulating design concepts and understanding how architecture can respond to existing contexts.

Within the Infrastructure Space atelier, we focus on data driven mapping and analytical methods to improve community and user experience. I am particularly looking forward to collaborating with Hyde Young People’s Enterprise, contributing to their aim of improving access to sports environments for young people in the community. I am interested in understanding how design can encourage participation, support wellbeing, and make shared spaces feel welcoming and easy to use for everyday activities.

Atelier: CPU

Hi! I’m Batool, an MArch 1 Architecture student in the CPU atelier. With over a year in practice at Associated Architects in Birmingham, I worked on educational and community projects, developing a strong understanding of designing for specific users and, more importantly, designing around people, through DfE standards and SEND school design.

Community projects allowed me to explore accessibility, interiors, civic identity, working within existing contexts, and navigating council constraints and budgets - giving me a grounded understanding of practice beyond education.

That’s what draws me to the CPU atelier. Focusing on Complex Planning and Urbanism, we explore how large-scale urban conditions shape architectural decisions, using iterative and generative computational processes to create resilient, smart, and sustainable buildings that serve people at the urban scale.

MSA Live feels like the perfect bridge between practice and my Master’s - a chance to work with real clients, apply my academic and professional experience, and design something meaningful for Hyde Community Courts that genuinely supports its users and community.

Atelier: &rchitecture

Hi! I’m Alex, I'm from North Wales and I'm an March1 student within the &rchitecture atelier here at MSA. I spent the last year at AEW Architects in Manchester and continue to work there 2 days a week alongside my Masters. There I have gained a wide range of skills and experience whilst working on retail architecture. The extremely fast paced nature of the work has helped hone my communication skills alongside time management and quality control.

Looking ahead in my career I have a keen interest in community projects, specifically spaces that serve multiple aspects of the community – something I have been able to explore through my work in the &rchitecture atelier. As an atelier we explore non-standard methods for revitalising and engaging the communities affected by our designs.

I’m looking forward to getting involved in the project with HYPE as it allows me to further explore my interests of working with individuals in the community to create something that serves them as best as possible.

We kicked off our first session by getting to know the team, sharing our architectural backgrounds and sharing our individual strengths, interests and perspectives. After getting to know eachother, we turned our attention to the brief. We spent time analysing the online resources and diagramming the project scope, identifying not just the bare minimum outcomes expected from us, but where we could expand the project by adding extra creativity and value.

Then, we worked on the collaborative design of our project poster. After sketching individual iterations and going over them as a group, we synthesised our ideas into a final draft that represented our collective vision. With several project names in mind, we headed into our first stakeholder meeting with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The presentation by the TfGM team was incredibly insightful, outlining the project trajectory and specific expectations. A productive Q&A followed, clearing up any potential ambiguities. As a group, we are really proud of the synergy we’ve built in such a short time, and it was rewarding to see that our excitement is shared by our client.

Today marks our first meeting at the MTC! Firstly, the group decided that from today on, we are ‘The Mobeelity Hubs’, combining the bee-like movements and connection of Manchester’s transportation, mascot and the brief. To warm up our brains, we started with completing our group contract and signing it together before sharing our ideas on our poster design draft, presenting our own interpretations of the brief. Seeing each other’s poster design will inspire the final product, elevating the poster with new and combined perspectives. Moving on to the core of our project, we discussed the relevance and key points of each person’s suggested precedent studies, reflecting each one against the brief. After getting into the design headspace, we started to discuss the advantages and disadvantages and decided to bring our focus to Oldham road as our site amongst other potential corridor locations.
With this, the first official meeting ended and we all set of to individually research the site to then merge our knowledge together next meeting.

Last week, we held our first group meeting together with our collaborator, Steve Hodgkinson. This initial session was an opportunity to get to know one another, align our expectations, and begin familiarising ourselves with the project. Steve introduced the brief, which was intentionally open-ended, giving us a great deal of creative freedom in how we choose to interpret and develop it. We left the meeting with a shared understanding of the project’s potential and agreed to reconvene the following week to bring forward ideas and begin shaping a clear direction collaboratively.

SESSION 01: MEET THE COLLABORATOR

The team gathered for their first meeting, which began with brief introductions and an insight into the stages each of us was at in our architectural journeys. It was interesting to see just how varied our specialities are, and it provided an opportunity to understand the diverse array of skills each of us could bring to the project. We then delved into the brief, gaining a broad understanding of the requirements, the site and our collaborator: The Common Land Collective (CLC). With many questions still in the air as to how we could best approach the project, we broke into pairs to gather more information on a specific aspect of the project to later discuss, share and build a common understanding of the project's potential. In the hour before our meeting with our collaborator, we discussed potential team names, poster design, and questions we had for the CLC.

During our meeting with the CLC, we were given a presentation by two members of the organisation which covered the details of the site, the projected timeline, and their ambitions. We were all thoroughly engaged and met them with equal enthusiasm, asking many questions that gave us a clearer vision for the project. Finally, we attended to the last matter of business: the team name. After thorough consideration and a tough voting campaign, we landed on the name The Eco Dens Collective.

Overall, the first meeting was a rousing success and gave us the running start we needed. We look forward to the project's future and hope the sessions moving forward continue this momentum to achieve our collective ambitions.

Hi I’m Lily! I’m a first-year student in the Bachelor’s programme at MSA. I’m Egyptian, and I’ve grown up between Dubai, Switzerland, and London. Having experienced different cultures and environments, I’ve developed a strong interest in how architecture responds to diverse social and urban contexts. I’m excited to further explore these ideas through my MSA Live project, Growing Togetherness.

Group 22 met for the first time for an introductory session and a deeply productive debrief of our task for the following weeks. After introducing ourselves and getting acquainted, we put forth the skills we thought we could bring to the group, breaking down the dynamics among BA1, M.Arch1, and MAAR and opening everyone up to the discussion. We exchanged interpretations of the brief, Ideas for the poster, idea on how to run the project, and formulated the questions to ask our collaborator later. We briefly exchanged views on roles and assigned current tasks, including who would design the poster, how it would be done, and what to do during the meeting with the collaborator. Later on in the day, we met with our collaborators from the Silk Museum in Macclesfield. Our discussion was very insightful; all our questions about outputs and the site itself were cleared up, and a date was set to visit the site next week. Our first meeting was definitely a success. We left with a clearer idea of the project, a group chat and drive, and a great group dynamic.

Site Visit

Following our meeting with our collaborator, Group 27 took a visit to Wythenshawe Park to visit Blossom Charity. We were welcomed by Kay and her colleague John, who both gave us an in depth tour of the various facilities at the horticultural centre. The charity is home to a wide range of plants, and supports people facing disadvantages in life by offering them the opportunity to help maintain these plants. As well as this, Blossom offers cooking and food-growing classes. These activities help people by building their confidence, providing them with company, and improving their health. Kay has outlined that Blossom needs environmentally friendly and cost effective renovation ideas for their greenhouses and classrooms, and it is now up to us to help her achieve this. The site visit inspired us, and we are all very excited to get started!

First Introductory Meeting -

Today marked our first time each other as well as the collaborator. We hit the ground running at the first instance to the point that two icebreaker sessions in, we didn’t need them anymore as we were comfortable with one another to share our experiences as well as assess our strengths and weaknesses to harness further down the line.
We also worked on understanding each other’s schedules, establishing communication, points of contact and slowly the group went through the norming stage with quite ease even though we didn’t know each other 3 hours before the session.
As we went through trying to understand the brief and its requirements, we were also brainstorming some ideas for project names that could fulfil the key principles that the Life Leisure stands for. Seeing that the project name needed to be incorporated into the poster, there was a separate group established that would be working to create the design with development sketch ideas provided by all members of the team.
After meeting with the Life Leisure collaborators, our first stance with the principles involving the words Accessible, vibrant, community, greenery and cross generation has made it abundantly clear.
And therefore I introduce to you, Active Axis and its members that will be working on it. Check next blog pages!

FIRST DAY 03/02/2026
Today was the first meeting with our group members and collaborators. During the group meeting, we introduced ourselves and discussed our initial ideas for the project. This included our first impressions of the GM Ringway and our thoughts on its potential. Everyone shared their views openly, and the discussion was active and positive.

In the final hour, we met with members from CPRE and one of the founders of the GM Ringway project. They introduced the background of the project and their expectations. We also exchanged initial ideas between our group and the collaborators.

Overall, the aims of the first meeting were achieved. We look forward to working closely with the collaborators over the next four months and developing a strong project that can attract more people to engage with the GM Ringway.
