BLOOM WELL

Blossom is a charity located in South Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park that focuses on community well-being through its many acitivities. We want to support Blossom in achieving its long-term vision of becoming a low-carbon, zero-waste horticultural hub. Bloomwell aims to create a phased, sustainable, refurbishment strategy that Blossom can implement to improve insulation within reaistic financial constraints, while keeping nature and community at the heart of the project.

Day 1

Today marked the beginning of MSA Live 2026! We received our project briefs, got together in our groups to do some ice-breakers and begin organising the project, and met our client. Safe to say that Group 27 are very excited to work with Kay from Blossom Charity in Wythenshawe Park over the coming months!

Site Visit

Following our meeting with our collaborator, Group 27 took a visit to Wythenshawe Park to visit Blossom Charity. We were welcomed by Kay and her colleague John, who both gave us an in depth tour of the various facilities at the horticultural centre. The charity is home to a wide range of plants, and supports people facing disadvantages in life by offering them the opportunity to help maintain these plants. As well as this, Blossom offers cooking and food-growing classes. These activities help people by building their confidence, providing them with company, and improving their health. Kay has outlined that Blossom needs environmentally friendly and cost effective renovation ideas for their greenhouses and classrooms, and it is now up to us to help her achieve this. The site visit inspired us, and we are all very excited to get started!

Poster Team Meeting

Following our earlier meetings, the poster team met up for a focused brainstorming session to develop our initial ideas. This session was all about getting our thoughts down, exploring different directions, and beginning to shape how we wanted the poster to communicate our work, whilst considering the research teams site analysis. We sketched rough layout ideas, discussed possible titles, and decided what key information needed to stand out on the poster. As the session continued, we assigned roles based on each person’s strengths, with some focusing on design and others on refining the written content. This helped us to organise our work clearly and move forward with a shared plan.

Workshop planning

Today our group got stuck into planning an engagement workshop, sketching and combining concepts to create a task that will actively involve the site's community while giving us valuable insights about the site. It was exciting to see our ideas start to take shape and come together. We wrapped up by delegating and running through the necessary tasks, leaving the session feeling motivated and ready to get stuck in!

GREENHOUSE MEASURE-UP

Today our group visited Blossom’s greenhouses to take accurate site measurements using a laser measurer. We recorded key dimensions of the greenhouse structure to help us map the layout correctly. We left with a clear set of measurements and photos, ready to turn into scaled drawings and start developing our first birdhouses design proposals.

Workshop visit

In today’s group meeting, we reviewed the documents needed for our upcoming submissions. We then visited the B15 workshop to ask about material costs and the best way to create birdhouse templates. This visit helped with our budget proposal and next steps for planning.

Workshop prep

Our group met again today, powered by good vibes and even better weather. We discussed our upcoming workshop activity, agreed on a date, and set out clear action points for the next few weeks to help us prepare. We also received feedback on our timeline, budget proposal, and risk assessment. By the end of the meeting, the group split up to refine and finish these documents.

Beard Houses Models

Today we headed to B.15 to review our physical models. We refined the designs, made a few adjustments, and gathered useful feedback while testing them ahead of this week’s workshop. Several improvements were made to ensure the models are easy to assemble and durable enough for the beards to use.

Safe to say, we’re feeling well prepared for the workshop and now we’re just hoping the sun shows up and blesses us with some Vitamin C on the day ☀️

Birdhouse Model-making Workshop

Yesterday, our group hosted a birdhouse model-making workshop at Blossom Charity. We began the session by showing the volunteers the plan of the space, and invited them to share their thoughts about the space by using coloured stickers and Post-it notes. It was nice to understand what they like about the space, what they want to improve, and what needs more attention.

After this feedback activity, we guided the volunteers on how to assemble the birdhouse by using the pre-cut wood pieces that had been prepared earlier in B15. We also provided them with some acrylic paints to decorate the birdhouse. Some beautifully painted cacti on it, while others decorated theirs with rainbows.

It was such a fun, hands-on workshop filled with laughter and meaningful engagement. So grateful to everyone who joined and contributed their energy! 💛🌱

Post Workshop Meeting

In todays group meeting everyone was in a positive engaging mood after a successful workshop with the volunteers at blossom. During the meeting we sat down around the site plan and carefully discussed each comment made by the volunteers, identifying key themes that emerged from the feedback. It was a truly productive session that helped us move our project forward ready for the action week.

During our first meeting during Enhancement Week, we focused on completing our individually assigned publication tasks before reviewing them collectively to ensure consistency across the final output. This collaborative review process allowed us to exchange feedback and refine the work together. We also analysed previous MSA Live publication examples to gain insight into effective layout, structure, and presentation approaches.
