COMMON GROUND

Our project focuses on supporting the work of the Wigan & Leigh Community Charity through designing an inclusive youth hub that responds to the social, creative, and wellbeing needs of young people in the local area. The proposal explores how architecture can provide safe, welcoming, and flexible environments for learning, mentoring, recreation, and community connection. Through being inspired by the charity’s commitment to opportunity, resilience, and engagement, the design will prioritise accessibility, visibility, and adaptable multi-use spaces that encourage participation and foster a sense of belonging. The hub is envisioned as both a social anchor and a creative platform, strengthening relationships between young people, families, and local organisations while contributing to wider neighbourhood regeneration. By embedding sustainability, affordability, and community collaboration into the architectural approach, we aim to create a long-term resource that empowers future generations and reflects the everyday realities, aspirations, and cultural identity of the Wigan and Leigh community.

ATELIER: SKN

Hi, I’m Sam.
I’m a 5th-year MArch Architecture student in the SKN (Some Kind of Nature) atelier.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, I completed my year out as an Architectural Assistant at Arcadis where I worked with colleagues on a global scale.

Outside of architecture, I keep myself ticking over by playing football, weight-lifting and running, all exercise that helps me balance a love for food. I’m really excited to be working with Wigan and Leigh Community Charity to help provide meaningful outreach programs to a youth community in need of new facilities. I hope to get out of this project a deeper understanding of what it means to work with locally run charities and gain some skills along the way.

Post University I hope to apply knowledge gained on sustainable and circular economy practices into the fabric of my work, and will hope to narrow my focus on socially led projects in addition to designing for those with cognitive impairment.

AMANEE MIAH

Hi, I’m Amanee.
I’m a first-year BA Architecture student at the Manchester School of Architecture, based in Manchester.

Before university, I studied 3D Design, where I developed a strong interest in architectural interiors and exteriors, particularly those influenced by classical and refined aesthetics. I’m inspired by cities, visual culture, and fashion, especially the way proportion and texture create identity. I’m particularly drawn to French architecture, including Haussmannian buildings, and the balance of order and ornamentation within those environments.

In the future, I’m particularly interested in exploring fashion-led spatial design, including runway set design and immersive environments.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy baking, visiting art galleries, and playing tennis. Through this project, I’m looking forward to exploring how thoughtful design can positively impact local communities.

WALAA OSMAN

Hi, I’m Walaa,
I completed my undergraduate degree in Architecture at the University of the West of England, where I developed a strong foundation in design thinking, technical knowledge and creative exploration. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture, specialising in Adaptive Reuse at the Manchester School of Architecture, a collaboration between The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. My studies focus on reimagining existing buildings and spaces, exploring how their life can be extended in ways that are sustainable, meaningful and socially responsible.
I also gained valuable professional experience working in Sudan, where I developed a deeper understanding of architecture within different cultural, environmental and economic contexts. Practising in my home country shaped my perspective on resourcefulness, climate-responsive design, and the importance of community-led solutions. It strengthened my belief that architecture is not simply about buildings, but about people, identity and place.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy walking in nature. Exploring landscapes, observing natural patterns and spending time outdoors inspires my creativity and reminds me of the importance of designing in harmony with our environment.
I look forward to combining our diverse perspectives, skills and ideas to develop creative and impactful proposals that genuinely connect with and benefit the local community.

HARRIET AKERS

Hi I’m Harriet!
I am currently in my first year of architecture at MSA. In my free time I like to draw and paint, play the piano and get fresh air by going on small hikes.
Moving to Manchester and starting university has presented me with many opportunities within my social life and my future. Which made me realise how limited the small town I grew up in was for younger people, making me excited to work on this project. We hope to find a solution that can enhance the neighbourhood whilst supporting a local charity. Through doing this project I aim to learn new skills and use this experience to help me in my future.

ELLI-ROSE DOUGLAS

Hi, I'm Elli.
I am currently studying my first year of university at Manchester School of Architecture. Throughout my life i have found joy in immersing myself into artistic and creative aspects of life. This early interest heavily influenced my academic path, leading me to study design focused subjects throughout school and college, and now architecture at university. I also pursue creating art and paintings in my own time, as well as a small business creating personalised cards and small items, or sketches.

My hometown of Stockport is one that has been subject to neglect in the past, however now it is getting the attention it needs and is rapidly developing. I hope to bring these revitalising aspects that surround me at home towards this project, turning the site within Wigan and Leigh into one that provokes inspiration to the younger generations, like my home town has had for me!

Day 1- The Icebreaker - 03/02/26

Our first session marked the beginning of our collaboration as a mixed-year team, bringing together BA1 and MArch students. To break the ice, we shared our educational backgrounds, design interests, and individual strengths. This helped us understand what each person could bring to the project, whether that be model-making, CAD, research, graphic communication, or critical thinking, and how we could distribute roles in a way that both builds on our strengths and encourages us to develop new skills.
We then turned our attention to the project brief. Working collectively, we highlighted key themes and unpacked its core objectives, mapping out ideas on a whiteboard to visualise potential directions. This early discussion allowed us to identify priorities, questions, and possible opportunities within the brief.
In preparation for meeting our client, David from Wigan & Leigh Community Charity, we drafted a structured set of questions to ensure our conversation would be focused and productive. To maintain clarity during the meeting, Tom was appointed as spokesperson while others took on note-taking roles, allowing the discussion to flow in an organised and professional way.
The first day focused on establishing a clear direction and ensuring that, as a team, we approached the project with a shared understanding of its aims and context.

- Creating a Poster

Our poster began through a series of quick hand sketches, where we explored composition, scale and how architectural forms could sit alongside people-focused imagery. Early on we discussed colour palette carefully, choosing tones that felt both local and welcoming, drawing from familiar materials and street colours found across Wigan and Leigh.

We then brought these ideas together digitally, layering the sketches, textures and graphics into a single composition. Rather than presenting a finished architectural proposal, the poster reflects the character of the existing built environment while emphasising collaboration. The aim was to visually communicate a shared effort, showing how small contributions, conversations and actions can collectively support and strengthen the Wigan and Leigh community.

Day 2 - Pre-project Admin - 17/02/25
During our second meeting, we regrouped to review progress across the different workstreams. The poster team shared updates on their developing visuals, while the blog team presented the current structure and direction of the written content. This check-in helped ensure alignment across the group and highlighted areas that required further development.
Our discussion then shifted towards gathering meaningful insights from the local community. As a team, we explored potential approaches to engagement, including identifying which site to prioritise and considering the value of conducting a visit to Wigan. We discussed how direct interaction with local residents, youth groups, and community stakeholders could help ground our proposals in real needs and lived experiences.
Building on these conversations, we began outlining a clear strategy for moving forward. This included recognising the need to prepare a risk assessment for any site visit or public engagement activities, alongside developing an initial budget plan to account for travel and material costs. We also acknowledged the importance of establishing a realistic time plan to coordinate research, engagement, and design development effectively.
Day 2 marked an important step in shifting from initial understanding towards structured planning, ensuring our next actions are both responsible and well-organised.

Day 3 - Planning and Project logistics - 03/03/26

Our third meeting focused on organising the practical elements needed to move the project forward. The group split into smaller teams to work on key preparatory tasks, including the ethics documentation, risk assessment, time planning, and an initial project budget. These discussions also highlighted some logistical challenges, such as the cost and coordination of travel to Wigan, which we began working through as a group.
Alongside these tasks, we continued developing our plan for the proposed site visit to Wigan. The aim of the visit is to gather insights directly from the local community and better understand the area we are designing for. As a team, we discussed potential activities for the day, including speaking with local residents and observing the surrounding environment.
To support this, we identified several questions and requests that needed to be confirmed with our client, David from Wigan & Leigh Community Charity. These included whether it would be possible to visit local primary schools, access the proposed building site, and obtain resources that are not publicly available online, such as floor plans of the existing building.
By the end of the session, our spokesperson had prepared to contact David to seek permission and clarify these details, helping ensure our planned visit and engagement activities can move forward smoothly.

The Research Round- 17/03/26

Today our team met up to discuss and review survey questions aiming to gather ideas and interests from students in Wigan for the youth club. We discussed how to design clear and engaging questions that would help us to understand what locals of Wigan would benefit from the space. We also took some time to research our site: St Nathaniel's Church, exploring its location, accessibility, facilities and potential to create a welcoming, safe environment for future youth activities.
With that being said...

Trip to Wigan- PART 1
Future of St Nathaniel's Church- 31/03/26

Our visit began with a discussion with our collaborator, David, who gave us more insight into Wigan's neighbourhood context as well as the value of bettering the community for the future. We then headed to St Nathaniel's Church where we were met with Lisa, a member of the Church community who shared invaluable insight into the realities of running activities on the site today. Several challenges were mentioned including: multiple entrances making supervision difficult, potential fire safety concerns with locked doors, teenagers sometimes arriving on e-scooters, raising safety and behavioural issues, antisocial behaviour and security being an ongoing concern and many families connected to the church facing complex social challenges including substance misuse issues affecting parents.
This conversation stood as a reminder that designing a youth space isn't just about architecture but about understanding people, safe guarding and creating an environment that supports community needs. With that in mind, we reviewed architectural plans, analysing how the building's existing layout could evolve into a space for different users and age groups. Some practical ideas discussed included: flexible hall with fold-away chairs, dividing walls to allow activities to run simultaneously, dedicated storage areas and improved circulation and clearer supervision zones.

Having observed the rooms within the Church and its interior and exterior make-up, it was time to propose our concept and ideas to deputy headteacher of Platt Bridge Community School, Carly. We shared initial thoughts on how the space could evolve into a flexible youth centre whilst also listening to how the school currently supports its students beyond the classroom. Having spoken to the community and spent time understanding the site, our next step entails exploration into potential spaces for the community.

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Trip to Wigan- PART 2
31/03/26

Towards the end of the day, our group gathered in a meeting room to brainstorm ideas for the proposed community space in St Nathaniel's Church in Wigan. We shared ideas on how the Church can be reimagined as a flexible and welcoming hub for the youth. Ideas ranged from a library or book swap corner to an arts and craft workshops later turned into exhibitions, roller skating, dance sessions, movie nights or even a sports hall. We also considered the possibility of using breakout rooms for skill learning workshops to connect generations, support those who are lonely and ultimately break barriers across the community.
Using our online survey, we hope to explore the outcomes of responses from students and stakeholders and how their feedback will shape the design direction.

Intensive Week Day 1: 11/05/26
We started off the day setting out a clear, organised plan for the rest of the week. We allocated people to different sections of the pamphlet, and a few of us made their way to B15 to work on the site model. We then discussed concepts and ideas for which activities would take place within the church, and designs that would facilitate these. To explore and consider each other's ideas, we created bubble diagrams and rough sketches which highlighted a variety of design initiatives.

After lunch, some of us focused on developing a weekly timetable for when each activity would take place, taking school hours and age ranges into consideration. We also started developing a sketchup model of the church, and began developing a layout for the pamphlet.

To end the day, we reflected on the work we'd done throughout the day and discussed how we would use our time the next day.

Intensive Week Day 2: 12/05/26
We started the morning by planning our visit to the primary school and organising how we would run the activities throughout the day. As a group, we discussed how we would introduce our project to the children and created a presentation to clearly explain our ideas in an engaging and accessible way. Alongside this, we developed worksheets and supporting idea sheets that the children would use during the activities.

Throughout the day, the group split into smaller teams to continue developing different aspects of the project. Some focused on the final presentation for Friday, while others worked on the SketchUp model of the church and began producing renders to support the proposal. In B15, model making also continued, including a site model, a simplified scaled model of the church, and a 3D printed model.

We also created practice examples of the activities we planned for the children, testing the worksheets ourselves through drawing, colouring, and assembling them. This helped us understand how the activities would work in practice and allowed us to refine them before the school visit.
Posted 13 May 2026 14:25
Intensive Week Day 3: 13/05/26
We began the day by finishing the renders of the church proposal. Once these were complete, some of us started sketching directly onto the renders to visualise how the spaces could be used, adding elements such as a basketball court, food pantry, and social areas to make the project feel more realistic and engaging.

At the same time, others completed the physical models in B15. The simplified church model was designed so that the children’s mural designs from the workshop could be inserted into the structure, helping connect the community activities back into the architectural proposal.

Throughout the day, we also continued developing the final presentation by organising images, sketches, renders, and resources gathered throughout the project so far. Towards the end of the day, we held a trial presentation session where we planned who would speak during different sections for both the primary school workshop on Thursday and the final presentation on Friday. We wrote and practised scripts to help improve the flow and confidence of the presentations.

Before finishing for the day, we printed and prepared all of the materials needed for Thursday morning’s trip back to Wigan, ensuring the worksheets, presentations, and activity resources were organised and ready to use with the children.
