GROUP 18

Green Corridor is collaborative collection of students acting alongside The GM Ringway Association and CPRE Lancashire with the simple aim to increase the volume of users along the Great Manchester Ringway walking trail. The project is a circular 200mile walking route around the outskirts of Manchester that links up the city’s greenspaces via 20 distinct stages and encourages the exploration of the outdoors through the use of public transport. The shared aim of the venture between the groups, is to unite new communities in the sharing of the trail - through innovative engagement via architectural interventions, striking signage and public outreach.

FIRST DAY 03/02/2026
Today was the first meeting with our group members and collaborators. During the group meeting, we introduced ourselves and discussed our initial ideas for the project. This included our first impressions of the GM Ringway and our thoughts on its potential. Everyone shared their views openly, and the discussion was active and positive.

In the final hour, we met with members from CPRE and one of the founders of the GM Ringway project. They introduced the background of the project and their expectations. We also exchanged initial ideas between our group and the collaborators.

Overall, the aims of the first meeting were achieved. We look forward to working closely with the collaborators over the next four months and developing a strong project that can attract more people to engage with the GM Ringway.

Hi! I’m Ruth, and I’m a BA1 Architecture student. I love walking, climbing and hiking, so I’m really excited to be involved in developing and publicising Greater Manchester’s Ringway. Having grown up in both big cities and rural countryside, I am enthusiastic about encouraging city dwellers to connect with nature, and look forward to seeing more people on GM Ringway’s walking routes.

Hello, I’m Yisheng Li, currently studying MArch 1 at the Manchester School of Architecture.

I’m not a professional hiking enthusiast, but I enjoy sports and I’m always happy to take part in a long-distance walk or a casual ramble from time to time. I often focus on large-scale architectural projects, so having the opportunity to explore smaller-scale installations is a refreshing and valuable experience for me.

I’m familiar with most digital design software, and I’m confident that I can contribute more on the computational and visual design side of the project. Spending weekends or holidays close to nature, especially on the outskirts of the city, is always a great choice. Therefore, I’m really looking forward to bringing new energy to the Great Manchester Ringway and attracting more people to engage with and become part of this initiative.

The first group of walkers—Noah, Sehar, Yisheng, and Ruth—each completed on-site walking surveys of their selected stages of the GM Ringway. They experienced the current conditions of three different stages firsthand and shared their individual observations, impressions, and identified issues.

Hi, I'm Rebecca!

I'm a first year MArch student at Manchester School of Architecture and grew up in the countryside before moving to Leeds for my undergraduate degree. Living in Yorkshire created a great appreciation for walking and hiking, so I'm extremely excited to be working with Greater Manchester Ringway to encourage more people to walk the routes and get out into nature!

28/04/2026. The plan for this meeting was to review our designs as a group for the five proposed bench types before adding these to the survey and conducting a final check of the survey and its questions, before meeting the collaborator.

Eddy from CPRE met with us to review the specific wording of different aspects of the survey and raised a few issues and suggestions he had which was extremely helpful!

30/04/2026. A productive Zoom meeting yesterday was conducted with Eddy from CPRE Lancashire after sharing the survey with him to distribute out in his organisation. I confirmed our next steps forward with the engagement event and answered any questions he had.

Hi I'm Freddie,a first year undergraduate student and an infrequent hiker. Despite this I love the outdoors as my grandparents live on a farm and I grew up visiting the countryside consistently throughout my childhood, despite living in the heart of Birmingham. This gave me a unique experience of loving the countryside and the city and so, I’m excited to be working with GM ringway to be able to promote the outdoors to all the city lovers. I hope to use my skills in BA1 to get more people using these trails to share my love for the countryside with as many people as possible.

11/05/2026. We met up as a group this morning to finalise our route for distributing the flyers. We plan to conduct this engagement event to chat to the public about the GM Ringway and encourage as many survey responses as possible!

Hi, my name is Karl Gellamucho, a first year Master student in Architecture. I also did my undergraduate degree here in Manchester at MSA. I love the outdoors and mainly play basketball. MSA Live is one of the great aspects of the course as it allows students from all levels to work together on a project which will hopefully please the client. Through this module we will gain some industry perspective
