STOCKPORT POP UP

Pop up digital arts workshops will be delivered in locations across Stockport between Jan-March 2024 which can be used for similar activities in following years and serve as a mini pop up cultural teaching space for Stockport Council. We are Group 34, MMU FutureEverything has been commissioned to support the evolution of Stockport Town centres cultural provision. We have identified a range of communities in Stockport who don't engage with creativity, or the town centre at all. What we need to do is to bring arts activities to them and gradually inspire them to engage with the new offers in the town.

First meeeting in Stockport!

On 01/31/24, we meet our collaborator Jonathan on our site, Stockport.

Stockport is an industial town, and popular for its market now. They are looking to develop a new city centre in order to attract people through cultural exhibition events, which highlights the purpose of our project.

We were guided around the town by Jonathan, our collaborator from Future Everything from newly developed area to the old town with a cultural route to learn the history of the town, visit existing cultural centres and understand the atmosphere between different areas. A more detailed discussion about the requirement, theme of the project took place at a local cafe. We discussed precedents and initial ideas for the following weeks. We are all excited and looking forward to working on this project, hope it is a fantastic journey :)

Our Pop-Up Wednesday Meetings - where we engage in brainstorming sessions focused on revitalizing Stockport town through our design proposals for the exhibitions. We're a hands-on group, passionate about sketching and sharing ideas to drive our vision forward!

During our insightful site visit with our collaborator Jonathan, we delved into strategies to enhance social interaction among Stockport's diverse communities. Our overarching mission is to actively engage and uplift the residents of Stockport, reinvigorating community spirit through an innovative art-driven pop-up structure. This concept draws inspiration from the town's rich architectural heritage, aiming to create a vibrant space that fosters connection and creativity among its inhabitants.

Today marked the fourth day of Action Week, and we began by delving into a hands-on activity centered around crafting our own interpretations of 'Pop-Up' models. Each of us contributed unique ideas, exploring various folding techniques to bring our visions to life. Throughout the first half of the day, we immersed ourselves in this collaborative process, resulting in a collection of 10 imaginative pop-up iterations. By the conclusion of the session, we selected our top two designs from this array of creative expressions that we built forward towards the end of the day.
Posted 15 May 2024 12:06
Following the model-making activity, the second half of the day was dedicated to refining our concepts. We split into two groups, each tackling a selected pop-up iteration. Our aim was to enrich these concepts by developing detailed and functional diagrams, exploring innovative folding, retracting, sliding, and twisting strategies.

Through close collaboration and creative brainstorming, we explored various possibilities and refined our ideas into a finalized concept for the structure. This process allowed us to leverage diverse perspectives and expertise within the team, resulting in a compelling and innovative design direction.

As we wrap up the day, we're thrilled with the progress we've achieved. Our finalized concept represents a culmination of teamwork and creative exploration. With our concepts solidified, we're now ready to enjoy the weekend ahead!

On the fifth day of Action Week, we began by advancing our finalized iteration. We organized into teams based on the structure's two primary functions: the interior exhibition and the extension structure. Each group delved into refining these components, utilizing folding techniques and experimenting with materials and joineries to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

In the latter part of the day, our efforts transitioned to creating diagrams showcasing various configuration strategies. These diagrams served as visual aids, illustrating different ways our structure could be adapted and configured to meet diverse needs and scenarios.

Overall, it was a great day of focused teamwork and creative exploration. We're excited about the progress we're making as we refine our designs and delve deeper into the possibilities of our innovative structures.

On the first day of the second Action Week, our group started the day with diagramming and drawing some sketches for the pop-up. This was in continuity of the work we have done the past week. This activity gave us a clearer idea of what we envision the pop-up. Our team has attempted diagramming both digitally and on paper. Besides, we have also done some 3D modelling to envision the project. This was to help us build unparalleled realism and accuracy.

It was a great day with teamwork infused. We are all excited to see what we have in store tomorrow.
Posted 15 May 2024 12:11
Following the construction, modelling, and diagramming from yesterday, our team focused mainly on detailed discussions about the pop-up today. The two groups were still in progress, focusing on the interior and exterior each. Using both digital software and hands-on work, the team worked on the structure in detail. The two subgroups discussed and collaborated to reach a final decision regarding the pop-up. Each member also had a different task in hand for the pop-up project to move forward.

We discussed about connections, joineries to execute modular strategies for our structure. Our group members had time to bond and get to know each other more as well. More possibilities about the pop-up were also discovered, giving us many alternatives to construct.
Posted 15 May 2024 12:11
Today, we have chosen the materials for the pop-up. We collectively decided that polycarbonate, glass, waterproof double-sided fabric, and metal should be used to construct our pop-up. Since the pop-up is outdoors, the materials must be waterproof. Polycarbonate is also light as the pop-up is movable. All the materials are durable, which is good for the pop-up in the long run. The material glass is also chosen as it is sustainable, which projects the sustainability agenda of Future Everything.
Posted 15 May 2024 12:21
We completed our day with modelling our modular strategy. We used greyboard and paper to build this model. Through this activity, we explored the different possibilities of the structure which can be elongated, as well as folded at different angles. We had discussions about the different configurations that can be achieved with this structure for an enhanced experience of the exhihibition space!
Posted 15 May 2024 12:21
As a team, we had an ergonomics discussion today. We measured the width and height of a human, along with the dimensions of the structure. This was to ensure that a few people could use the structure at the same time and that there was enough space to walk through.
Posted 17 May 2024 17:31
Today, we're diving back into our tasks, eager to move forward with our output list. We've organized our day to collaborate in pairs, putting the finishing touches on our drawings and 3D models, and preparing the model for laser cutting.

It's been an exhilarating day, and we're delighted by the fantastic diagrams created by BA1 and BA2 students. They've truly showcased their creative talents in illustrating the narrative of our concept. We're now just steps away from the finish line!
Posted 17 May 2024 17:31
After much effort, our team has successfully assembled the physical model of our Pop-up structure at B.15. This hands-on project provided BA2 students team with valuable insights into the intricacies of joineries involved in crafting a modular mobile structure. The end result is truly exciting, as our team delved into various flexible configurations during the experimentation phase.
Posted 17 May 2024 17:32
As we wrap up our two-week schedule, we're brimming with excitement over the project's progress and outcome. The collaborative effort and attention to detail from each team member have resulted in a final design that exceeds expectations. The BA1, BA2, and MLA teams have shown remarkable dedication in bringing our ideas to fruition. As this thrilling journey concludes, we hope that our design proposal has made a meaningful impact on the Stockport community, elevating their surroundings and enriching their lives.
