ECO-EXPO LYMM HALL

Our site is the grounds of the grade II* listed Lymm Hall in Warrington. The brief is to design and visualize a new-build bothy within an existing berry orchard. The grounds were originally designed by the distinguished landscape architect – Edward Kemp, and incorporate a listed moat, icehouse and historic cock-fighting pits. As well as the bothy we aim to produce a series of conceptual designs that re-imagine and adapt these other unique spaces. Our client Ecospheric, who’s offices are located within Lymm Hall, are one of the UK's leading sustainability consultancies in developing low carbon solutions for retrofitting. They would like our conceptual schemes to incorporate cutting-edge sustainability technologies and strategies. Their ambition is that these designs can act as an exhibition of sustainable technologies that will stimulate conversation within the local and wider community on how we can re-imagine our built environment whilst delivering on the UK’s future zero carbon ambitions.

Lymm Hall is situated in the heart of the historic village of Lymm, Cheshire. Many of the local residents and
heritage organisations care deeply about preserving the hall, which has a history of more than 400 years on this
site. Beyond the residents of Lymm, this project is of interest and importance to groups invested in sustainable
building and heritage preservation, such as the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings (SPAB),
Historic England, The Greater Manchester Retrofit Accelerator, and Association for Environmentally Conscious
Building (AECB), and Passivhaus Trust.

DESIGN SPRINT – After meeting the team and conducting a team building exercise, we ran a design sprint, to gather initial sketch ideas for the four different mini projects. From this we were able to recognize themes and conceptual ideas for the next stage.

INITIAL IDEAS – The students chose which mini project they wanted to work on and we split into mini groups to discuss potential initial ideas and the sustainable technologies that could be implemented. Conceptual diagrams were produced for each mini project which were presented to the whole group for comment.

PRESENTATION PREP; Forward to the review with the client tomorrow morning, each group collated their work so far into InDesign document for presentation. As a team we grouped together for our daily progress review at the end of the day and prepared an agenda for the meeting, ensuring that there is a cohesive design narrative across all mini projects.
