THOMAS WEBSTER

Atelier: SKN

Hi, I’m Tom.
I’m a 5th-year MArch Architecture student in the SKN (Some Kind of Nature) atelier.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Architecture at the University of Sheffield, I moved to Manchester to work at AEW Architects as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy staying active through hiking, weight-lifting and running, alongside playing guitar and photography. I’m really excited to be working with Wigan and Leigh Community Charity to help provide genuine value to a community in need of new facilities. Drawing on both my professional and academic experience, I hope to offer fresh external insight into how we can adapt the area’s abandoned spaces and create meaningful places for young people.

ATELIER: PRAXIS

Hi, I’m Greta - I’m in my first year of studying Masters of Architecture in the PRAXIS atelier. I studied at UCLan for my undergraduate degree before working in practice, where I worked on projects in areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Communicating with clients in practice was the highlight of my year out - I’m looking forward to collaborating with a client again for MSA live. I’m passionate about relevant, sensitive design which addresses key issues for communities. I’m excited to encourage positive action within Wigan & Leigh alongside my group. When I’m not studying, I’m usually horse riding, painting or walking in the countryside.

ATELIER: CONTINUITY

Hi I’m Joyce ,
I’m currently in my first year of studying Masters of Architecture. For my undergrad, I studied at Central Saint Martins and the University of Kent before undertaking 1 year placement at JM Architects in London.

Growing up in London as well as travelling , I’ve been naturally drawn to building designs in different environments and climates. I’ve managed to help my dad with a housing project in my native country, Congo, which gave me early hands on experience on concept and design. Outside of architecture, I enjoy painting in which I've had the opportunity of one of my paintings to be on Supermalt Can and sold across the UK. I also enjoy running, padel and scenic walks :)

SAM WALKINGTON

ATELIER: SKN

Hi, I’m Sam.
I’m a 5th-year MArch Architecture student in the SKN (Some Kind of Nature) atelier.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, I completed my year out as an Architectural Assistant at Arcadis where I worked with colleagues on a global scale.

Outside of architecture, I keep myself ticking over by playing football, weight-lifting and running, all exercise that helps me balance a love for food. I’m really excited to be working with Wigan and Leigh Community Charity to help provide meaningful outreach programs to a youth community in need of new facilities. I hope to get out of this project a deeper understanding of what it means to work with locally run charities and gain some skills along the way.

Post University I hope to apply knowledge gained on sustainable and circular economy practices into the fabric of my work, and will hope to narrow my focus on socially led projects in addition to designing for those with cognitive impairment.

JAI LALL

Hi I'm Jai,
I'm a BA year 1 Architecture student at the Manchester School of Architecture. I really enjoy trying new things and working on this project has given me the opportunity to put my creativity to use and meet new people. Alongside architecture, I enjoy playing the violin and going on walks, taking in the environment around me. Through this I can explore new places and come up with new ideas which I'm excited to bring to this project. I hope to contribute positively to the Wigan and Leigh community through creating an inclusive and sustainable area for young people which supports opportunity, wellbeing and creative engagement within the community.

AMANEE MIAH

Hi, I’m Amanee.
I’m a first-year BA Architecture student at the Manchester School of Architecture, based in Manchester.

Before university, I studied 3D Design, where I developed a strong interest in architectural interiors and exteriors, particularly those influenced by classical and refined aesthetics. I’m inspired by cities, visual culture, and fashion, especially the way proportion and texture create identity. I’m particularly drawn to French architecture, including Haussmannian buildings, and the balance of order and ornamentation within those environments.

In the future, I’m particularly interested in exploring fashion-led spatial design, including runway set design and immersive environments.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy baking, visiting art galleries, and playing tennis. Through this project, I’m looking forward to exploring how thoughtful design can positively impact local communities.

SIYI LI

Hi, I'm Siyi Li (Sheri),
I studied Interior Design for my undergraduate degree in Shanghai. I later spent two years studying Architecture in Japan before continuing my studies in Adaptive Reuse at the Manchester School of Architecture. My interests focus on adaptive reuse, spatial experience, and the relationship between architecture and interior design, particularly in the transformation of existing buildings through sensitive contemporary interventions. After university, I hope to work on projects involving adaptive reuse and interior design, with a particular interest in hospitality and experience-driven environments.

WALAA OSMAN

Hi, I’m Walaa,
I completed my undergraduate degree in Architecture at the University of the West of England, where I developed a strong foundation in design thinking, technical knowledge and creative exploration. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture, specialising in Adaptive Reuse at the Manchester School of Architecture, a collaboration between The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. My studies focus on reimagining existing buildings and spaces, exploring how their life can be extended in ways that are sustainable, meaningful and socially responsible.
I also gained valuable professional experience working in Sudan, where I developed a deeper understanding of architecture within different cultural, environmental and economic contexts. Practising in my home country shaped my perspective on resourcefulness, climate-responsive design, and the importance of community-led solutions. It strengthened my belief that architecture is not simply about buildings, but about people, identity and place.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy walking in nature. Exploring landscapes, observing natural patterns and spending time outdoors inspires my creativity and reminds me of the importance of designing in harmony with our environment.
I look forward to combining our diverse perspectives, skills and ideas to develop creative and impactful proposals that genuinely connect with and benefit the local community.

XINYU ZHONG

Hi, I’m Xinyu Zhong (Madison).
I’m currently studying MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse.I studied Interior Architecture & Design at Coventry University, and I’m especially interested in adaptive reuse and socially-driven design — how existing buildings can be reworked to support real communities, not just look good in renders.Alongside that,I’m looking forward to further study and developing design approaches that connect adaptive reuse with social issues — especially projects that combine education/skills training with space to support social-enterprise models.

HARRIET AKERS

Hi I’m Harriet!
I am currently in my first year of architecture at MSA. In my free time I like to draw and paint, play the piano and get fresh air by going on small hikes.
Moving to Manchester and starting university has presented me with many opportunities within my social life and my future. Which made me realise how limited the small town I grew up in was for younger people, making me excited to work on this project. We hope to find a solution that can enhance the neighbourhood whilst supporting a local charity. Through doing this project I aim to learn new skills and use this experience to help me in my future.

ELLI-ROSE DOUGLAS

Hi, I'm Elli.
I am currently studying my first year of university at Manchester School of Architecture. Throughout my life i have found joy in immersing myself into artistic and creative aspects of life. This early interest heavily influenced my academic path, leading me to study design focused subjects throughout school and college, and now architecture at university. I also pursue creating art and paintings in my own time, as well as a small business creating personalised cards and small items, or sketches.

My hometown of Stockport is one that has been subject to neglect in the past, however now it is getting the attention it needs and is rapidly developing. I hope to bring these revitalising aspects that surround me at home towards this project, turning the site within Wigan and Leigh into one that provokes inspiration to the younger generations, like my home town has had for me!

Day 1- The Icebreaker - 03/02/26

Our first session marked the beginning of our collaboration as a mixed-year team, bringing together BA1 and MArch students. To break the ice, we shared our educational backgrounds, design interests, and individual strengths. This helped us understand what each person could bring to the project, whether that be model-making, CAD, research, graphic communication, or critical thinking, and how we could distribute roles in a way that both builds on our strengths and encourages us to develop new skills.
We then turned our attention to the project brief. Working collectively, we highlighted key themes and unpacked its core objectives, mapping out ideas on a whiteboard to visualise potential directions. This early discussion allowed us to identify priorities, questions, and possible opportunities within the brief.
In preparation for meeting our client, David from Wigan & Leigh Community Charity, we drafted a structured set of questions to ensure our conversation would be focused and productive. To maintain clarity during the meeting, Tom was appointed as spokesperson while others took on note-taking roles, allowing the discussion to flow in an organised and professional way.
The first day focused on establishing a clear direction and ensuring that, as a team, we approached the project with a shared understanding of its aims and context.
