Offset from the vibrant road of Barlow Moor Road is the old Police Precinct - another derelict space ideal for Chorlton Bike Deliveries’ Bike Hub. This site also challenges you to design and include the space needed within an existing structure, all whilst integrating with the wider community along Barlow Moor Road.
Whilst Chorlton Precinct awaits its redevelopment, many shops remain vacant in the meantime, giving rise to an opportunity for a pop shop! Located in the heart of the Precinct, this vacant shop provides Chorlton Bike Deliveries with a temporary space to host their Bike Hub, offering a wider and more interesting discussion on ownership in a public space. This site challenges you on how to create an engaging space in the community, all whilst using the existing space provided.
Sustainability is also core to the brief, therefore this project seeks sites that enable recycling and reuse, raising wider discussions about premise and ownership, which is currently a major challenge in Chorlton.
Through meetings and emails, our team collaborated with Glynis and Dan to search for potential sites around Chorlton that respond to the sustainable aspect of the brief. The following posts present 3 sites that initiate reuse projects. The BA students will work in groups to create a design proposal for each site. During our first meeting on Monday, each group will visit their site with a member of our team and with Glynis or Dan for site discussions before commencing the design process over the 2 intensive weeks.
Glynis came to the first meeting with a clear vision for the Bike Hub. As CBD grows across Chorlton and beyond, their existing infrastructure to store their bikes is becoming too small! Therefore, a safe storage place for their delivery bikes and trikes is at the centre of this brief, with a larger vision of a Bike Hub – a place that encompasses a bike library (bike rental), recycling bike project (workshop), refrigeration for food and a social space to promote and support cycling and walking.
Our first collaboration with Glynis from Chorlton Bike Deliveries and Dan from Architecture Unknown in February!
It was a great opportunity for Glynis to explain all that Chorlton Bike Deliveries (CBD) do for the community. It was insightful for our team to learn how CBD operate daily – appreciating the logistics involved for CBD to support small local businesses and help the people of the community. This insight aided our understanding of Glynis’ detailed programme of the Bike Hub. Together with Glynis and Dan, we discussed precedents and potential sites that can house this programme that engages with the wider community. This first collaboration was a great opportunity to see how involved Glynis, Dan and our team were, providing the means to ensure the two intensive weeks are a collaborative process for us all.
At the start of the week we will finalise the plan for our 1:1 installation, as well as create final visuals for the publication. We will have 2 teams - a modelmaking team and a publication team - working simultaneously throughout the week to reach the desired outputs. There will be an opportunity for the modelmaking team to work at Martenscroft on some of the days, to allow for the children to observe the building process.
On the final day, we will return to Martenscroft and observe how the children interact with our installation. We will also curate a pin-up display board in Martenscroft which summarises our design process of the project. Our concept will be handed over to Martenscroft, which they can then choose to take further and make a reality in the future if desired!
After introducing ourselves to each other, we will be visiting Martenscroft on the first day to see our site. We also have guest speakers from MMU and Caukin Studio who will introduce us to ways to design for and work with children.
Introductory workshops into Photoshop, SketchUp and physical modelmaking taking place throughout the week will guide the brainstorming process.
During the week, mini design competitions will take place in groups, with the senses taking turns to be the main focus. These aim to help determine the site strategy and what we might choose to build at 1:1 scale.
We were honoured to be the guests of their launching event on 25th March. Seeing how the space has been transformed and watching the community getting together and supporting each other for the launch fueled our excitement to get our collaboration, Upcycle up and going!
Our excitement also led us to leave some messages in their time capsule :D
Don't forget to check out their social media for updates and events!

This project will be an opportunity to expand on skills such as site surveying, sketching/ collaging, model making, 3D modelling/ rendering, and work with external collaborators and consultants.
This project aims to engage in an essential issue experienced in today’s world, especially in Manchester, - Homelessness. With the view that it is our social responsibility to contribute solutions to this problem through architecture, we are proposing an innovative design to shelter homeless and differently-abled youth, which we believe would serve as the foundation for many more solutions in the near future. This project, through a scheme of community led design, would provide a space for skill development, leisure and communal gatherings for the residents to help improve their mental health and generate livelihood.
Youth House Co-op(under Greater Manchester Housing Action) is a non-profit organization in Manchester, set up by formerly homeless young people who are working towards developing a community led housing scheme for other homeless and differently abled people.
With a severe lack of homes for people in need, community-led housing offers a real opportunity for people to come together to benefit from supportive and secure homes. The scheme would be designed around the needs of local people and built with the community, not profit, in mind.
Through collaboration with MSA, they desire to develop a replicable community led housing scheme and spread understanding of use of disabled adaptation grants and grants to their future practice, benefiting more disabled homeless young people who wait longer than any group for housing currently.
We will be working closely in collaboration with them during the action weeks and would be interacting with potential residents of the housing scheme to understand their experiences and desired outcomes for the project. We will also be working closely with an occupational therapist for disability access planning, carbon co op for insulation advice as well as a Fire safety consultant for the project.
Youth House Co-op, a non-profit set up by formerly homeless young people, aims to house young people kept homeless by disability and disadvantages the founders experienced themselves.
Our project - “Living Up”, in conjunction with the organisation, will look into developing a creative proposal for the development of an inclusive and accessible multi-million pound housing scheme for young homeless people in Manchester. We will explore and work with shipping containers to design an interesting masterplan which would help the organisation achieve its planning submissions and will bring many people out of homelessness.
Within this project we will be using a variety of software. We will be helping you to build skills through workshops and then use these skills to complete the project. Throughout the two-week project we will be available for questions and to assist with any issues with software.
Adobe Photoshop: To edit photos, create site analysis diagrams and produce the masterplan.
Adobe InDesign: To lay out work produced in professional manner, add text and annotations to describe work, create an overall document to explain the project to the collaborator.
Rhino: To create 3D model of site, to add materiality and produce 3D renders.
Virtual Reality: To visualise the final product to the collaborator.
Sketching: To help convey and visualise design ideas and thinking.
Creative Thinking: To think outside the box to resolve design problems and think of innovative solutions.
We are working with the Chorlton Traders Association to help regenerate the area through 15-minute neighbourhoods.
Regeneration: The 15-minute neighbourhood model will regenerate the immediate living environment, accommodation, the street, service availability to improve life satisfaction.
Community: The 15-minute neighbourhood model will encourage people to build a community that is self-sustainable by supporting local businesses and providing everyone needed within the boundaries of Chorlton. This will improve health and wellbeing, increase diversity, and provide a stronger sense of community.
Municipal: The 15-minute neighbourhood model will help to bring everything back to the local area. By attempting to create an economically viable district with high footfall the employment opportunities will rise. Eventually the wealth generated will stay within the local area and reduce economic and social inequalities.
Meet our external collaborator! The Chorlton Traders Association is a community association of Chorlton Traders, working together for the benefit of all.
The association has a multitude of aims including;
- Discussion about local decisions
- Representing traders and residents as a single voice
- Communicate with local government
- Develop initiatives to gain opportunities for Chorlton
- Promote projects that will allow prosperity in Chorlton
- Planning long term goals to make Chorlton a great place to live and visit
The association is full of members who truly care and actively want to make Chorlton the best it can be to work and live.

We want to create a scheme that allows for different forms of encounter, collective spaces for the people who live and work here as well as spaces that allow get-togethers with the wider community and guests” Homebaked Community Land Trust.
Within this project you will be guided through a range of activities including; designing and running a community engagement workshop, producing technical drawings, storytelling / narrative development, graphic design and illustration. We will be helping you to build on these skills through active participation in the project.
Welcome to Homebaked a Community Land Trust that is located on the boundary of Everton and Anfield, just opposite Anfield Stadium. The Trust is a growing group of local residents who have been working together since 2012 to shape the pace where they live and work in community ownership.
In the first week of the workshop, students will be taken on a tour around the area, where they will be introduced to the client whilst exploring key areas of significance. Following the walk, they will engage in a series of mapping exercises. Students will be supported through the provision of Digimap, Adobe Suite and Sketch-Up tutorials. At the end of the first week, students will engage with public consultation, where they will meet members of the Castlefield community and have the opportunity to ask questions.
During the second week students will be engaged in designing and digital modelling, where they will learn about architectural visualisations for the concepts they have developed. Using the previously acquired skills students will begin to finalise design ideas. Creativity and representation styles will always be supported, and students will choose how they wish to visualise their ideas.
The project aims to engage with our external collaborator, Castlefield forum in achieving their vision of a cleaner, greener, safer, better Castlefield. The area is facing issues with unused spaces, confusing vistas and fragmented ownership. This has caused Castlefield to lose its cultural value over the time and the residents to feel disconnected with the place. There is an opportunity to tell the story of Castlefield and re-imagine a cohesive cultural identity for the place.
The project aims to tackle this by documenting the area of Castlefield which can be used as a basis for future developments. The other focus will be on providing urban interventions in the form of improving the quality of green spaces and community interaction areas. The objective is to use architectural tools and ideas to promote a healthier and safer living environment in Castlefield
Our collaborator is Castlefield Forum, a community group which became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2019. Headed by a board of 11 trustees and supported by 97 volunteers, The Forum is run by the community, for the community.
Their primary objectives are: to protect and celebrate Castlefield’s rich history, by educating residents and visitors on the geography, history and culture of the area; to maintain an enjoyable environment for current residents, through running action groups such as ‘Castlefield Clean & Green’ who regularly carry out litter-picking walks; and to promote positive urban regeneration, by working with the council to uphold high standards of planning and architecture.
Not only this, but The Forum provides an excellent opportunity for neighbourhood interaction – in an area where many residents are transient, the opportunity for a sense of community is limited. The Forum help to encourage neighbourly connections through their action groups, and through our project, we hope to offer further interventions to enhance this side of the organisation.
Re-imagine what once was an important landmark in the area and Re-ignite the new propose signal box to allow community engagement and connection to the heritage and its surrounding transportation routes

What happened to Nuclear Free Manchester?
Once upon a time, Manchester saw itself as a leading light in the fight against nuclear annihilation. Now not only do we have several companies here who manufacture nuclear missiles and submarines, but we also put ‘em in the regional marketing brochure.
How did this happen? When did Manchester City Council go from a peace-loving city with doves on the road signs to actively encouraging some of the worst companies in the world to set up shop here?

We want to address growing housing inequalities, intergenerational challenges and the climate crisis. We believe that creating a sustainable, resilient, diverse and multigenerational community will bring us one step closer to this goal, and during covid-19 we believe this will have an even greater positive social impact. In addition, we hope to reduce the energy costs of the community by recycling energy in a way that will no longer be the preserve of the wealthy, but will also allow people on low incomes to move into the community, while also achieving an environmentally friendly goal.
