Waymarking works with communities to shape and influence how their neighbourhoods are developing, through community-led planning, regeneration and economic development. Waymarking is led by director Sarah Spanton, who has a background in the arts and creative sectors, which is fused with urban design and community-led regeneration techniques to create bespoke place-based capacity building programmes. Recent and current projects include: supporting community business development in Gipton, Leeds (commissioned by Space2, Leeds) and Manningham, Bradford (commissioned by Power to Change), community-led healthier neighbourhood programmes in Woodhouse Park Manchester (commissioned by MCRactive). These co-designed and co-produced programmes have included supporting communities to: undertake their own research into health in their neighbourhoods; staff and participant training on setting up community businesses and on neighbourhood economic resilience, including setting up inspirational study visits. Community members working with Waymarking, find and amplify their voices, develop agency and realise their potential power as a group, and lead on local regeneration where they live and work.

Day 01 - Ice Breaker

Today we had our first official group meeting where we met together and did introductions. As an ice breaker, we paired the students up and asked them to draw a portrait of one another. Each student presented their drawing and explained their interests in architecture.

In the afternoon, the students worked together to make a 1:200 site model.

Day 02 - Site Visit

Today we visited the site and the students met with the client for the first time. We explored the site and collected photographs. At lunch, we all got fish and chips from the infamous chip shop in Miles Platting.

In the afternoon, the client invited community members and people involved to explain their thoughts and ideas that they would like implemented into the project.

In the afternoon, our client invited us to take part in some community planting on our site. This involved helping the volunteers with digging and planting.

We split the students up into two groups, where they discussed their thoughts and started making their initial concept designs.

Day 04 - Presentation

In today's session, our client Sarah visited us to present to the students. She explained the history of our site and provided more information about Waymarking C.I.C. The students then had the opportunity to present their initial proposals and they received feedback from the client.

Each group continued to explore their concept ideas through sketching, modelling and CAD. Each group presented their ideas to the team leaders and the other group to receive feedback on how to develop their designs further.

After a relaxing post-deadline weekend, the undergraduates reflected on the comments from the Friday session and further developed their group designs using drawing, collage and detailing.

Today the groups continued to develop their designs through model making and CAD software in preparation for the client presentation on Thursday.

Today, the students continued developing their designs and preparing their presentation documents for the client meeting tomorrow. Each of the groups developed physical models and produced visual renders.
