Skills
As touched on above, during our project, you will have opportunities to learn and develop architecture visualization through a variety of digital software. Our project aims to produce architectural drawings, digital and physical models and also a final documentary film. We will offer workshops for Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and 3D digital modelling, these workshops will enhance the students work and provide them with lifetime skills for working in the role of a future young Architect.
In the first week, students will understand and explore the design principles of NMGH green village with its contexts. Students are located into two groups for different tasks with 3D modelling and video editing respectively. We will provide a range of software workshops and a community workshop in Crumpsall Community Hall at the end of the first week. During the second week, students will be engaged in the design and modelling process and complete the video. This project aims to promote master planning and communication skills as well. We encourage undergraduates to produce creativity in the final output and delivery the ideas to collaborations.

Abigail May
Hey Everyone, My name is Abi I am a fifth year at Manchester School of Architecture. I have chosen this MSA Live group because I am interested in healthcare architecture, patient-focused design and meeting lots of external partners.
Atelier:
I am in Atelier PraXXis, this atelier focuses on feminist theory and design. We spend time talking and having feminist conversions about how to make architecture a more inclusive practice. We look at feminist technologies and explore how the technical design of a building can have a positive impact on its users.
Undergraduate:
I studied at Newcastle University for my undergraduate and my graduate project was in experimental architecture where I developed a biological concrete prototype.
Work Experience:
After graduating I worked for Newcastle University and I was part of the team working on the £30M Sports centre new build and then I worked at a small practice in the Northwest and had the opportunity to independently design a Highschool building extension from stage 0 through to 7.
Hobbies:
Scuba diving, painting, travelling and drinking cosmopolitans.
Skills:
Painting large scale underwater paintings, make-up as an art form.

Omkar Sanjay Salvi
Hey everyone! I’m Omkar Salvi, an M.Arch student in Year 5 at Manchester School of Architecture. I think MSA Live is a unique module where people with different backgrounds, ideologies, Architectural styles and even different skillset collaborate and work together for one project and I’m looking forward to play my part in this unique collaboration.
Atelier:
My studio Atelier is Infrastructure Space where we focus on the North Sea from a Macro to micro level with an ideology of working toward achieving the UK’s 2050 Net Zero aim through design interventions on various scales in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire.
Undergraduate:
I hold a 5-Year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree from the University of Pune, India.
Work Experience:
I’ve worked in a design practice “Dream Arch Studio” based in India for a year. Currently I work part-time at Manchester United Football Club (MUFC) where I get a first-hand experience of how Hospitality Management and Administration of a large-scale institution like MUFC works.
Hobbies :
My hobbies include listening to a mixed-genre of Music, which could switch from Bollywood Music to UK Rap to Punjabi Pop Music in under 9 minutes. I also like swimming and playing Snooker, which ironically I hardly ever get to do.

James Jones
Hey everyone! My name is James and as the rest of my group, I am a fifth year at the Manchester School of Architecture. I had chosen this MSA Live project as I am really interested in film making and talking to new people, I also enjoy the challenge of trying to ascertain what the community want out of a project delivering that idea in a real and live format.
Atelier:
Currently I am in Atelier Making, this atelier focuses on Making (as the name might suggest). We spend loads of time making models and fleshing out many different design concepts and prototypes. For example, our first project consisted of rebuilding a dilapidated barn with items from within the barn, an extremely interesting project indeed.
Undergraduate:
Prior to joining MSA I had graduated from Liverpool John Moore’s University with a bachelor of arts in Architecture.
Work Experience:
Shortly after graduating, I joined a small Architecture practice in the North West working primarily on Super homes, it was definitely an eye-opening experience.
Hobbies:
My hobbies involve running, Jiu jitsu and cycling. I am currently training for the Conwy half marathon in November!

Day 1 Schedule!

Day 1: INTRODUCTION
We are excited to get started with Community Calls Project on our first day. The first meeting of the whole design team consists of an introductory presentation to better understand the project brief. We introduced the site and discussed the principles and goals of this project. The undergraduates began to familiarise themselves with the afternoon workshop sessions and prepare some drawings and collages.

Day 1: COMMUNITY WORKSHOP
The community design workshop began at 2 pm in the Crumpsall Community Hall! Everyone is welcome to express ideas and opinions about the proposed new open space.
We had prepared collage materials, craft supplies, and free refreshments for this workshop. It is a valuable opportunity to communicate with residents in the local community. The notes, drawings and collages will be analysed for the further design process in the two action weeks. Also, thank you to Nin from our primary external partner Hive Projects and students from Manchester College Film to assist this workshop!

Day 2: DRAWING COLLECTION
We guided people to express their ideas through drawings and collages during the community design workshop. And we focused on abstracting vital ideas and opinions from individual drawings.

Based on the interviews and drawings, our design team created a profile of the interviewees.
The main aim was to gain a better understanding of the views of the local community and to provide a solid basis for design development.

We are grateful to the local residents who participated in our design workshops. It was a valuable experience for us to learn about the different opinions and participate in this community project.

Day 3: MEDIUM PRECEDENT STUDY
Undergrads were asked to produce an A4/A3 printout of case studies and examples of how they want to create/visually represent their chosen profiles ideas on the green space. We encourage everyone to share ideas and discuss initial concepts for green areas.

Today we discussed each person's ideas on how they could use their chosen medium to visually represent the profile on the green space. We were pleased to hear that most people used a variety of mediums in this project and began the first step of their project.

Day 4: INTERVIEW
An interview was conducted with David Baldwin from Shepard Robson by Omkar Salvi, a team member from Community Calls on the 19th of May. David Baldwin has been working on the North Manchester General Hospital project at Shepard Robson Architects from the last 2 years. The interview briefly discussed David’s opinion on the Village Green project and how the design team approached to cater to the Community of Crumpsall. He elaborately spoke about their community involvement in Crumpsall and the general concepts and objectives behind the design of Village Green.

Day 5: DISCUSSION YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT
During the morning session, the undergraduates were asked to make a short presentation on their design concept.

We are all excited to be involved in this community project. The schedule for the week included a community workshop, third party interview and initial design development. We spent time abstracting key ideas from local residents and transferring these into different visualizations.

We had a video editing tutorial for students to produce the final video output, James introduced Adobe Premiere Pro and basic editing techniques.

"My design was inspired by the Manchester bee, from this base design I then added extra walking tracks and a shopping area that could include coffee shops, toilets, and restaurants. To keep the park clean I added multiple bins around the park. I wanted the space to include different ground heights to make the space feel more natural than man-made.
I also added a playground, skatepark and seating area so that the space would appeal to community members of all ages. The park is designed around a central pond that I think would add extra serenity to the area which was important to consider with the site being located right next to the hospital."

"The proposed design ensured all her requests. For safety, lots of lighting was provided as well as separate dog parks distant from the kids' playground. The design also took into consideration accessibility, by Placing equipment and features at varying heights as well as creating wide enough routes throughout the play space. Additionally, the park is full of colorful flowers and trees."

"I have made shelter a main consideration by designing a seat with canopy as seen in the animation and image, with timber strips for slight privacy. This seating with a canopy is important for people to be able to sit back and appreciate the green space, even when it is raining — which happens a lot in Manchester. The sound of water contributes to the tranquillity of the space, perfect for relaxing after work. The park should also be a place for nature to flourish, including insects."

Today, we had interviews with Nin Khoshaba from Hive Project and Warren Duffy, Head of Estates at North Manchester General Hospital. Their opinions on the proposed open space provide a lot of fresh ideas for the design development.

"I have learned to design architecture through a user-centred design approach. Through zooming into Sue’s profile, I was able to acknowledge specific programme requirements from a community point of view, in order to create a meaningful use of space for future development. "

"Sensory elements such as sight, tactile, scent and acoustic aspects are
also crucial in the design, and they come together to promote a space with exciting features. For instance, having the holes in the walls represents all the losses from a year while allowing light to pass through and create meaningful and aesthetic patterns. The meaning of the wall can also be seen as static, identical and similar height elements which contradict the chaotic growing nature - as if the memorial walls are for eternity and frozen in time."

"Landscape type drawings where I made a quick map of what to include in the park based on what my person wanted there to be. I then drew in pencil the different things like the pond or benches, later going over bits in a black fine liner and then watercolours. I placed the different layers of drawings together to give it different levels and depths and this is what I created."

"My community member, Jasmine, asked for a green space that provides playground equipment for her children and a zen-like space filled with a plethora of flowers and Japanese gardens for the residents and hospital workers. I created this image using Sketchup, Illustrator and After Effects."

"The narrative of the design takes on natural and open spaces as the key driver to respond to the community members’ desires. Integrating communal areas, seating areas and bicycle paths enable a greater sense of freedom, happiness and community in an urban landscape. The food stall is an integrated component of nature that promotes a greater sense of arrival but at the same time supports small businesses to promote local cultures and diversity. The overall design promotes a greater sense of inclusiveness and openess in an ubrany densified landscape in Manchester."
