Group 13
VERY MUCH

In this project, we will model and visualise concepts for a new co-housing scheme for MUCH, Manchester urban co-housing and will help them develop some key marketing messages and materials for their website and for social media. The hope is that the material produced will attract people to the housing scheme from all around Manchester, people at the lower end of the age spectrum (50-60 years old) as well as attract people with disabilities, people of colour, LGBT people and men. Using some of the potential designs that MUCH has along with precedence of other co-housing schemes in the UK we will develop a design with a digital model which includes the key design principles MUCH wants to feature in their upcoming scheme. As well as story boards for potential residents which will include snapshots of their lives/ daily routines at the scheme and finally, lots of creative conceptual imagery and collages to represent the scheme in a fun and artistic way. We will prioritise the needs of the occupants for example social interaction, maintaining independence, support for developing needs and using materials and design layouts which generally create a pleasant place to live and spend free time. The live project will push for a deeper understanding of the necessities behind designing co-housing and designing with community ethos in mind, moving the project from simply an idea to a visual and realised concept.

MUCH, Manchester Urban Co-Housing
MUCH is made up of a group of individuals who have a collective vision for a sustainable co-housing scheme within South Manchester where people over 50 can move to when they feel they no longer want to live alone, have potentially retired or are just looking for a home within a close-knit community. The scheme will encourage interaction and social activities between its occupants, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere to call home.
The scheme will support independent living by providing self-contained apartments but also community areas and co- workspaces where members can socialise and host events. Mutual support and additional external support will allow members to sustain an independent lifestyle and support individuals’ well-being so that they can continue to thrive. The design of the scheme will also ensure that homes and shared indoor/outdoor spaces will be able to meet members future mobility or other needs.

The skills within our project can be developed upon or learnt from scratch as we will provide small workshops on Photoshop, Indesign and 3D digital modelling at the start of the two weeks. We will always be on campus too if anybody needs to ask us for any help while carrying out their tasks for the project. If you are confident in any one of the skills on this poster then we encourage you to join our team as you can develop your skills and learn new ones as you work with us.
For the 2 weeks will have a small team to work on the digital model and video walk through. However, we will also be making lots of creative conceptual images and story boards for potential residents, whether that be by hand drawing or by using photoshop to create fun diagrams, collages and renders.
If this sounds like something, you will enjoy doing then please join our team!

Part of the vision is to create a social impact that would principally consist of the creation of collaborative living and eating arrangements for older people. The aim is to allow residence to age actively in a mutually supportive environment but also contribute to sustainable cities and communities by releasing under-occupied family-sized homes. Furthermore, the scheme will ultimately contribute to the realisation of savings in health and social care costs.

Furthermore, the scheme will help bring isolated and potentially lonely people into a supportive, community based environment in which they can maintain their independence at the same time. Residence will be also able to find assistance from internal and external groups to support their wellbeing and mental health needs and so continue to thrive.

The MUCH team are active, values-based elders and the results of the live project will hopefully recruit likeminded people to collaborate with MUCH to bring their vision into reality.

The first team meeting!

Today we have had introductions and a meeting between the students in the morning and an informal presentation from Pam and Sian from the MUCH team :)

We are now all familiar with Co-housing and MUCH. We have organized ourselves into to small groups with a team leader for each group.

We are all meeting tomorrow to start the project outputs.

We look forward to the weeks ahead :)

Day 2

Today the students came in and began their first tasks.
They were split in to different teams to create different pieces of work :)

One team started on a 3D Digital Model,
One team started to hand draw story boards
and
One team started some conceptual collages.

The Masters students lead and gave instructions to each team and helped/guided them throughout their tasks.

Today everyone got to know each other even better and the undergraduates developed their skills with the the masters students help :)

Day 3

Today all students worked really well and some managed to finish their collages! These collages are focused on sustainability, community and activity.

Other students continued working a long side their masters students on the story boards and the 3D digital Model.

It is nice to see all our students working together and learning new skills as they go, including building on their communication, team work and their architectural skills.

Once the model is complete the students can then work on producing some more exciting and visually dynamic images for the publication!

The days following this the students will have continued workshops on photoshop, rendering and video making :)
