Through a creative installation, we aim to breathe new life into the park, making it a more inviting place for the community—especially young people. This project is part of the “Alternate Alsager” event, where music, food, and street art come together to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for self-expression. Peripheral Praxis, is a local collective passionate about art, architecture, and creativity. We collaborate with the community to spark new ideas, inspire change, and make underused spaces come alive. Join us in shaping the future of Milton Park! Skills: sketch models, group work, concept design, ideation and development, hand drawings, workshop model making, client meeting, presentation

Peripheral Praxis is an emerging local interest group focused on arts, architecture, technology, and the alternative. Conceived as a collective, it currently comprises Home Coffee & Studio and Studio 100a in Alsager. Dedicated to provoking, inspiring, and revitalizing spaces through creativity and collaboration, Peripheral Praxis provides studio space while also engaging with people and places through projects and initiatives. Their aim is to educate, facilitate creativity, and drive real-world change by positioning their work within the “alternative” cultural sphere.
Posted 9 Mar 2025 16:26
Aim:
The project aims to inspire real-world change by activating and rejuvenating the underused public space at the Milton Park skate park through a bespoke physical intervention or series of interventions. Positioned within the “alternative” cultural sphere, the project will engage with local people, particularly young residents, to highlight new possibilities for the space, foster social connections, and promote Alsager as a destination. It will coincide with the “Alternate Alsager” event, combining music, food, and street art to create a fun, engaging, and safe environment for self-expression.

Output:
A site-specific installation that interacts with the place and its surroundings, designed and prototyped based on insights from community engagement. The process will include speaking with local people, particularly young residents, with discussions and sketches recorded and presented using other potential deliverables.

DAY 1:
Today, we welcomed the BA and MLA students, introduced the project brief and our collaborators, and kicked off a dynamic brainstorming session. The students were split into groups and began developing initial concept sketches, capturing their first impressions and creative responses to the skate park. We employed a pin-up method, where students presented their ideas, engaged with one another’s drawings, and provided constructive feedback. After the presentations, they explored the site in greater depth to better understand its scale and context, through a master planning workshop.

DAY 2:
Day 2 started strong with a visit from one of the collaborators, who came by to check on the students’ progress and share some feedback. After that, the group split in two, some worked on the site model while others focused on developing conceptual models.

DAY 2 - Brainstorm and Sketches
We’ve made great progress since yesterday’s brainstorm! Everyone contributed fantastic sketches, and we now have three distinct concept styles. Each one brings a unique perspective, and we’ve started forming rough ideas on the masterplan. The next step is to develop these further and refine the overall direction.

DAY 2 - Site Model
After developing our concept ideas, we began building a physical site model of the existing skate park in Alsager and some conceptual models. Site model will help us better understand the potential challenges we might face during the later stages of the design process.
Posted 13 May 2025 19:23
DAY 3:
We completed the site model today, and everyone enthusiastically moved on to concept sketching and designing the installation on-site. Both the BA and MLA students began refining the ideas they developed on Day 2, and everyone made excellent progress!

DAY 3 - Site Model
We went to B15 to laser cut layered MDF boards to represent the depth of the skate pool. Combined with hand-cut grey board models, we successfully completed the site model. We’re excited to move on to the next stage of the design!

DAY 4:
The students split into three groups, to create different concepts for the presentation with the collaborators on Day 5. The first group's idea related to the railway history of Alsager. The second one created an art interactive installation, while the third came up with the idea of creating a performance space.
Posted 15 May 2025 16:25
DAY 5:
For the end of the first week, we had one of the collaborators come in to see the progress made. He had very useful feedback for each of the concepts, and guided the students towards reaching a desired output.

CONCEPT 1 - Pavilion
We unintentionally divided everyone into BA1, BA2, and MLA groups. This concept originated from the BA2 students. They designed a pavilion alongside the skate pool, creating a sheltered space where children can play around the installation. They also proposed a children’s graffiti wall, referencing the existing graffiti wall next to the skate pool, where children can draw on it, moving their arts class to outdoors space.
Posted 19 May 2025 11:54
CONCEPT 2 - Installation X
This proposal comes from the BA1 students. They designed an X-shaped installation along the pathway between the graffiti wall and the skate pool. The intersecting arches of the X are envisioned to be constructed using recycled railway materials. Within the gaps of the structure, colourful images and drawings can be displayed, creating an engaging and ever-changing visual experience. On sunny days, the structure casts dynamic shadows on the ground that shift and evolve as the sun moves across the sky.
Posted 19 May 2025 12:03
CONCEPT 3 - Performance Stage
This idea comes from the MLA students. They propose a dynamically shaped structure that functions both as a stage and a skateable surface, forming a tunnel-like space for interactive play. In addition, they designed a pottery tower inspired by Alsager’s pottery heritage. The tower allows children to climb up and enjoy an elevated view of the entire Milton Park.
Posted 19 May 2025 12:13
DAY 6:
We are finalising the design today by extracting ideas from each group and aligning them with the requirements set by our collaborators, who want something building on-site. The pavilion is intended to be easy to construct, and we’ve decided to use timber for the structure. Besides the design itself, the main challenges we’re facing are determining how to build it and deciding on the appropriate scale.
Posted 19 May 2025 16:46
DAY 7:
Today, the group has discussed on the details of the pavilion as the final design installation. While still developing and resolving the structure and material, students were split in 2 groups, producing drawings and sketches of the final design, and the other group making sketch model. The students also prepared the materials needed for 1:20 final model.
Posted 20 May 2025 15:53
DAY 8:
We finalised the scale and structure of the Stoke-on-Trent pavilion and began constructing the 1:20 model using real materials. Meanwhile, other students worked on drawing the 1:20 section and elevation. A highly productive day!
Posted 22 May 2025 11:07
DAY 9:
Today, we wrap up the design work for the model, section, elevation, masterplan drawings, and renderings, all created at a 1:20 scale. We also begin documenting the sketches and writing a description of the conceptual journey from day one. NEARLY THERE!!!
Posted 23 May 2025 00:29
DAY 10:
We were wrapping up the final organisation and scanning work. Our collaborators have asked us to film a video presentation for the project. We’re producing two separate videos—one tailored for children, aiming to communicate our ideas in a fun and engaging way, and another for the council, serving as a formal proposal to advocate for bringing the project to life at the skatepark.
