WINDOW INTO LINDOW

Here is Window into Lindow! We are working with the Lindow Moss Landscape Partnership to create a special architectural heritage trail. The project combines cultural heritage, nature, tourism and community, aiming to raise awareness of the peat bog to transform it into a sustainable landscape. Our focus is providing interactions with throughout the site to aid the ecosystem and enhance the environment. By upgrading the existing Heritage Trail and adding a new Architecture Trail, we will aim to encourage deeper interaction between people and the place in different ways. We will choose materials and strategies that interact with the local ecology and peat to create an attractive, eco-friendly temporary space or landscape features. In the future, we hope this project will transform Lindow Moss into a vibrant space that provides a unique experience for both the community and visitors.

Our first visit to the site was with Jack, who guided us along the scenic Heritage Trail, a 3.5-mile path that passes through the unique peat bog. Jack shared information about the peat, the bog's ecosystem, and we learned about the surrounding buildings and the lives of local residents.

Hello, my name is Xiaohan Ma, and I am currently studying Adaptive Reuse at MSA. I previously earned my bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Liverpool.
I chose the Lindow Moss project because I am particularly interested in the relationship between architecture, people, and nature. The Lindow Moss project provides a unique opportunity to explore how design can contribute to both conservation and community engagement.
Through this project, I look forward to learning more about designing within a nature reserve while considering cultural heritage, environmental recovery and community well-being.

- Continuity

I enjoy exploring how designs can be adapted for alternative uses, ensuring versatility and sustainability in architectural practice. My approach combines creativity with thoughtful consideration, aiming to shape spaces that are both functional and visually impactful.

During my undergraduate studies at Coventry University, I began to develop a deeper understanding of how architecture influences the world around us. I focused on the connection between designs, their surrounding context, and the communities they serve.

In my professional experience I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to various residential projects. Passionate about blending modern and classical design elements.

The MSA LIVE project particularly caught my attention, as it embraces nature and the outdoors in a meaningful way. I’m excited by the enthusiasm and strong engagement of the collaborators at Groundworks, and I look forward to collaborating with like-minded individuals to increase the exposure of Lindow Moss

Hi, I am Muye!
I am currently studying in MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse. Before this, I studied the transformation of historic districts and urban villages in Shenzhen University, and I gained one year of practical experience in Chinese historic building restoration in research institute. I really enjoy uncovering the historical stories behind buildings, and I also love hiking and mountain climbing.
I am very excited to be part of the Lindow Moss. This peat bog is rich in history and culture and also serves as a unique space where natural ecology, architecture, and cultural heritage intersect. I look forward to exploring Lindow Moss with you, discovering both enjoyment and inspiration.

- I'm Luke!
- MArch I
- Continuity

I'm particularly interested in cultural and theoretical narratives and how they can enhance and engage with a place. Studying in Continuity has consolidated my interests in contextual architecture, heritage and history.

For my undergrad, I studied at the University of Nottingham, focusing on crafting stories through architecture and deeply linking the building to its users or communities.

After completing my undergrad, I worked for DLG Architects based in Leeds particpating in a mix of large scale commercial and industrial projects. Following this, I worked at HG2 Architects; a small practice located in Harrogate with an eye for contextual detail with a contemporary approach.

I chose this MSA Live project due to the rich history of Lindow Moss and its expansive ecology at risk due to Peat extraction. The collaborators at Groundworks are enthusiastic and are strongly engaged in the project. I look forward to the two weeks in which we'll venture to the site and have fun creating outputs Groundworks can use to increase exposure of Lindow Moss

Group meeting

On the first day, the group activities revolve around the launch of the project and preliminary research: familiarize the members and clarify the project goals through the ice-breaking link, conduct desktop research on the Lindow Moss Protected Area and surrounding architectural sites, integrate information into the Miro visualization platform, and formulate the group route and collection of the next day's field trip. Plan. Complete the project framework combing, information database construction and log update on the same day.

Day1-After work

After the activity, the team prepared the next-day inspection route: refine the hiking route according to the three key areas screened in the early stage, combined with satellite maps and topographic data. Inventory the equipment list and record equipment to each group, and check the communication equipment synchronously. For different tasks (site mapping, vegetation sampling, community interview), clarify the division of labor and data collection standards of members. Finally confirm the assembly time, transportation connection and backup route to ensure the efficient and safe progress of field research.

Day 2 - Site Visit

On our second day of action week we ventured to site by train - splitting into three teams we each focused on three key areas of research to allow the team to consolidate the desktop research. We explored key areas of conservation, architectural sites, finding key moments of interest within the conservation area.

We took plenty of photos, collected samples and small artefacts to inspire the further design progress.

A great day out in the sun!

Day 3 - Establishing the Narrative

We worked within our assigned groups today, focusing on material research, precedent and SWOT analysis.

This allowed us to establish the route of the Architecture Trail and key sites for the gateway proposal.

Day 3 - Site Reflection

Each of us prepared a drawing reflecting on our experiences throughout the trails, capturing key moments and experiences.

These were helpful in choosing work groups aligned with interests and delagating tasks based on personal avenues of research.

Day 4 - Material Testing

Today the Material Testing team crafted samples to test the QR codes for the plaques, ensuring they would be durable, easy to produce and sustainable.

After many tests (some better than others....) the results were great!

Hello! I 'm Jiayu Lu.
-MArch 1
-Non-Standard Habitat

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and worked in an architectural office in China to gain practical project experience. I then returned to the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree. My expertise includes architectural illustration and post-processing of renderings, as well as an in-depth understanding of architectural behaviour and residential design research.

D4-Trial Design

We have collected everyone's intention maps for map, as well as their choices of style and information.

Discuss the design of the trail. Based on everyone's understanding of the site, the trail for the project is finally determined.

Day 5 - Gate design

We made brave creations with branches and metal wires collected from the site, about the form of the gate, the shape, how the new material can be combined with the original wood.

The position of the gate, the shape of the combination, and the schematic effect will be refined in the coming sessions. The process was very interesting and interactive.

Day 6 -

Today we continued to expand our trail map by identifying and highlighting key buildings across Lindow Moss. These structures are shown on the map through illustrative elevations to serve as waypoints along the architectural trail.

Alongside this, we continued refining our intervention concepts through additional sketching, ensuring both elements work together as part of a cohesive spatial narrative. We have also begun to put together the final set of conceptual drawings

Day 7

Today, we have achieved many results, including improving the overall building trail Map, deepening the design of the Gateway and landscape nodes, and the results of the test materials. We start the production of the project web page. Meanwhile, we are also actively preparing for the presentation of the phased achievements to our partners tomorrow.

Day 8 - Conversation Day
Today is an exciting day! Our collaborators came and we shared with them the results and process of the window to lindow project and we had a great conversation! Then in the afternoon, we continued to move forward with the publication documents.
Posted 21 May 2025 16:21
Day 9-Final Collaboration & Review

The group confirmed the final outcome. Each group should collaborate to complete the final presentation content of the entire project, ensuring that all components ((website, pamphlet, models, and drawings) are ready. The final output includes complete content and a clearly structured display plan.
