Catchup 2 - Our first site visit to Prospect Vale Primary School.

All of the team members met at the site on the 27th of January with the Headteacher. Luke (Headteacher of the school) gave us a tour around the site and into the chosen rooms for the project.
During the visit, we were able to understand the scale of the project, assess the suitability of proposals and understand the requirements of the space. We were also able to gain first-hand experience from teachers who use the space daily and understand some of the constraints they are having with the current design of the space.
Luke shared with us the feedback from teachers and students using the space, this enabled us to understand what worked well in the space and where there were necessary changes needed.
We were also able to access the current outdoor space and see first-hand the current lack of indoor-outdoor connectivity and how this can be rethought.

Hi, my name is Jonatan and I’m a MArch 1 student, joining as part of the FLUX Atelier at MSA. I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Newcastle University in 2022 and have went on to work on a variety of small- and large-scale residential projects at BPTW in London during my Part I placement year.

I have always been drawn to the detailed aspects of architecture and enjoy understanding how things work by making them, which is why I am particularly excited to design the pagoda as part of our proposal. My hands-on experience with timber construction began at a young age, working on DIY projects around the house with my father. I’m really looking forward to working with the Monton Unitarian Church community to create a garden that is as much about the shared experience of creating as it is about the final space itself.

Hi, I’m Zofia!

I am from Krakow, Poland, where my passion for architecture began, but my studies continued in the UK. I completed my bachelor’s degree at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where, for my final year, I was part of the regenerative design studio.

Before my master's degree, I returned to my hometown to undertake 1.5 years of practical experience at Ingarden & Ewy Architects. My work involved industrial, residential, and interior design as well as various architectural competitions, including the redevelopment of the Saxon Palace in Warsaw, where our design received a second award.

My interest lies in designing a responsive and inclusive green environment that promotes well-being and adopts a regenerative approach. I look forward to working on-site alongside the local community and engaging in hands-on activities. I can’t wait to start crafting a prototype of a mycelium brick!

When I'm not focused on architecture, you’ll find me traveling, skiing, doing watersports, or behind a camera.

@TheGrange in Blackpool is a large community hub on the Grange Park estate. It has been highlighted as a centre of best practice for engaging local residents in wellbeing activity through the support provided by
the team at Groundwork.
The site includes a library, café, theatre, community farm, free to use laundrette and various meeting rooms.
Space is now at capacity and in order to deliver more activities for community benefit we want to look at reimaging underused spaces. This would include:

1) Redesigning the complex toilets and storage spaces to improve the quality of toilet facilities and create more functional community space.

2)Redesigning the open public spaces within the building providing a better flow and bringing the outdoors in. This would include design options to create a mixed library and café space and reimaging the outdoor patio space.

Our First Site Visit!

At the beginning of February, we had a chance to meet with Nathan, one of our collaborators, a head grower who takes care of the rooftop garden at The Landing. We discussed some of the primary ideas for the project and the possible output to achieve. It was a mind-opening site visit that inspired a creative design approach, utilising natural materials, repurposing waste from the Where The Light Gets In restaurant and engaging with the local community.

Nathan told us more about the activities they have on-site. These include workshops with school students, volunteer activities such as weaving locally sourced sheep wool to protect some of the plants in winter, and collaborations with artists and craftsmen.

The Shed is to provide the shelter where the workshops could be organised, providing the space to cook with the selfgrown ingredients and a communal table to gather and craft.

I enjoy exploring how designs can be adapted for alternative uses, ensuring versatility and sustainability in architectural practice. My approach combines creativity with thoughtful consideration, aiming to shape spaces that are both functional and visually impactful.

During my undergraduate studies at Coventry University, I began to develop a deeper understanding of how architecture influences the world around us. I focused on the connection between designs, their surrounding context, and the communities they serve.

In my professional experience I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to various residential projects. Passionate about blending modern and classical design elements.

The MSA LIVE project particularly caught my attention, as it embraces nature and the outdoors in a meaningful way. I’m excited by the enthusiasm and strong engagement of the collaborators at Groundworks, and I look forward to collaborating with like-minded individuals to increase the exposure of Lindow Moss

Our plan for the two weeks working with us includes a variety of exciting activities! We’ll start by welcoming you to the team and providing all the information you’ll need to get started. You'll meet our collaborator, and if all goes well, we may even arrange a site visit. Along the way, we’ll have group tutorials and creative sessions designed to foster collaboration and skill-building. Our goal is to create an engaging and informative environment that closely mirrors a real-world working experience.

In week one, we’ll focus on laying a solid foundation, setting us up to hit the ground running in week two. During this time, we’ll pay special attention to placemaking within a heritage setting and other key aspects of the project. In week two, we’ll dive into refining the final designs, visuals, and presentations to share with our collaborator. To wrap up, we’ll have a presentation and handover to potential collaborating architects, followed by a celebration to mark the success of our time together!

Hello, my name is Xiaohan Ma, and I am currently studying Adaptive Reuse at MSA. I previously earned my bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Liverpool.
I chose the Lindow Moss project because I am particularly interested in the relationship between architecture, people, and nature. The Lindow Moss project provides a unique opportunity to explore how design can contribute to both conservation and community engagement.
Through this project, I look forward to learning more about designing within a nature reserve while considering cultural heritage, environmental recovery and community well-being.

On February 5th, we conducted a site visit to assess the current state of the Waterhouse Chapel.

This visit allowed us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the chapel’s condition, architectural details, and any necessary restorations. Through close collaboration with our partners, we gathered valuable insights into both the historical significance and structural requirements of the site. Engaging with the local team provided us with firsthand perspectives on existing challenges and potential areas for enhancement.

These findings will play a crucial role in shaping our next steps, and we look forward to implementing strategic improvements to ensure the successful advancement of the project.
Posted 10 Mar 2025 18:38
On December 4th, our team met with collaborators from Friends of Waterhouse Chapels, Peter Fleetwood and Nigel Roberts. We began with a brief introduction to the Waterhouse Chapels, outlining potential works, key stakeholders, and National Lottery funding.

We then discussed the project's significance and its potential impact on the community. From these conversations, we developed an initial concept strategy, positioning the chapels as a functional space that celebrates the works of Alfred Waterhouse.

To move forward, we arranged a site visit to further assess the space and explored the possibility of coordinating a meeting with Buttress to support their process and guide the following stages of our development.

TIA TIAN

I’m a practical architect based in Beijing and a dedicated researcher on smart architecture at MSA.
With an innovative and passionate approach to design, I explore multiple narratives within projects of varying scales, attributes, and contexts.
Beyond architecture, I find inspiration in the untamed beauty of the mountains, where I love to hike and travel—seeking new perspectives, fresh air, and the quiet wisdom of nature.

Hi, I’m Rebecca.
I am from the UK
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Nottingham and am currently in my first year of the Master of Architecture course in the Continuity Atelier.

My interests include understanding and designing spaces for people and function and the old-fashioned way of doing things with a simple pen and paper, like drawing by hand and physical modelling.
Outside of architecture I love to travel to all over the world and experience fun activities and different cultures. I also like to read and write, and growing as many plants as possible on my windowsills and, much like my plants, I like to be outside in the warmth (preferably on holiday somewhere).

I am looking forward to working with Brick by Brick and Oswald Road Primary School because it offers the opportunity to inspire and teach younger children and will be a different experience than what is usually offered on projects at university, hopefully expanding and varying my skillset not only in the workplace but also in life. I am exited for the action weeks ahead!

Hi, I’m Yiyu Luo!

Course: MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse

I'm from Zhejiang, and I studied product design in the International Department of Wenzhou Business School, which seems to be completely different from my current major.

In my free time, I enjoy cycling and swimming, and occasionally go to some extreme sports as a challenge.

The reason I joined the Manchester Climate Coalition group was because I felt that climate conditions were essential for survival. What we're doing may not be big, but we're trying to improve the climate, and that's why I'm very interested in this group, doing my part.

Name: Taras Mandziuk
Course: MArch 1
Atelier: Infrastructure Space

I studied Architecture & Planning at the University of the West of England, graduating with both RIBA and RTPI accreditations, meaning I am qualified to work as both a Part I Architectural Assistant and an Urban Designer/Town Planner.

After graduating, I worked for 18 months as a Part I Architectural Assistant at BoonBrown; a medium sized practice in Somerset working in multiple sectors, including residential, retail, medical, and industrial projects.

My key interests are in community-centric architecture and urban regeneration projects. My work experience gave me an opportunity to develop professional skills within these interests on real-world projects, and now in my atelier at MSA, I am further developing my skills and interests.

I chose this MSA Live project as it is a great opportunity to actively engage in a scheme that will likely be built, and that will serve as a template for future development along Tyldesley High Street. I think my skills will be very useful to the group, and I believe that this project could potentially become a model for future urban regeneration schemes in other areas of decline.

Hi, I’m Lisa, I am a Master Architecture and adaptive reuse student. I studied at the University of Chester for my undergraduate in interior design. I have always had a passion for older and derelict buildings and thought A&AR was the perfect next step for my career to pursue in property development.

When I do get some spare time away from assignments, I take my two dogs for long walks exploring the countryside. I also love coming up with new ideas for interior design and experimenting in my house.

I chose Manchester Climate Alliance as it is a great opportunity to explore renewable energy for listed buildings.

Hi everyone, my name is Chung Hei Mok, but feel free to call me Henry to make things easier. I am originally from Hong Kong and completed my bachelor degree at Newcastle University. After a few years of Part 1 placement in the UK and Hong Kong, I am in my first year of the MArch programme, currently working in the ''Non-Standard Habitats'' atelier.

The relationship between architecture and humans has always intrigued me. No matter how well the setting suits the users' needs or how the aesthetic language appeals to our senses, a great design is always created by a thoughtful mind behind it. For me, exploring the story behind each project, what it is and how it came to be, is at the heart of my architectural interest. Outside of architecture, I am a huge football and photography fan.

In ''Brick by Brick'', I am excited not only to teach the kids about architecture, but also to see how their creativity can inspire me to rethink how architecture can be interpreted from this bilateral relationship. I hope this experience sparks new ideas and offers a playful exchange of thoughts. I am sure it will be a fun and inspiring event!

Firstly, some background!

The Ince Cemetery Chapels are a slice of local history right in the heart of Ince. Built in the mid-1800s, these chapels were created by the Ince Burial Board, which was set up after the Burial Act of 1852 to improve burial practices and sanitation in the area. The land for the cemetery was purchased from John Walmesley, part of the Ince Hall Estate, and the site was split according to the town's religious makeup—two-thirds for Protestants and one-third for Catholics and Dissenters. The chapels were designed by the famous architect Alfred Waterhouse, known for his Victorian Gothic style, and completed in 1857. As Ince grew and more churches popped up, the chapels saw less use. Today, the cemetery and chapels are cared for by Wigan Council, standing as a fascinating reminder of the town's history and how it transformed during the industrial revolution.

Hi, I’m Aysha!
I was born and raised in India, where I completed my undergraduate studies. After working for two years, I am currently doing my masters in MArch, CPU(Ai) atelier

Nature has always been at the heart of my design approach—I could spend hours just watching the sky! I believe nature has so much to teach us, and I love exploring how it can shape architecture. At the same time, I’m keen on blending these ideas with technology to create practical, future-ready designs.

What excites me most about The Oswald Old primary school project is interaction with children! I once taught a class of primary kids on Teachers' Day back home, and those three hours were both the most challenging and the most fun. Kids see the world so differently, purely through nature and their surroundings. And I think I’ll learn just as much from them as they will from me. Plus, spending two days making them more aware of their everyday spaces sounds like an amazing, joy-filled experience!

Hello, my name is Emanuil.

My journey in architecture began in Denver, CO, where I was captivated by the endless possibilities the field offered.

After earning my Bachelor of Science in Architecture from UC Denver, I embarked on an 18-month journey in Paris. This period was fundamental as I had the privilege to work with two distinguished architecture firms. Each firm had a distinct architectural philosophy. I honed my skills on a broad spectrum of projects, from residential communal dwellings to large sports centre arenas, and everything in between, including refurbishment projects in the heart of Paris, France.

At MSA, I found myself drawn to the NSH atelier through its unique approach to originating non-standard forums that architecture can inscribe through material exploration, unconventional sites and aspiring future sustainable notions.

I am eager to share my enthusiasm with fellow students and professionals and embark on exciting projects within the field of architecture.

It was wonderful to connect with individuals from Stockport Council, the Resilient Cities Network, Planit, and Shedkm. Our goal was to understand what this project could mean for the community while exploring ideas on how we can foster greater collaboration.
Posted 10 Mar 2025 15:42
Over the two weeks our main aim, alongside our ambitions, is to have fun and learn new skills.
We will not only visit the site and meet our collaborator, but we'll engage with the local community at a consultation event held at What If?'s community hub during the first week.
We're also hoping to visit a similar, highly successful, project in the heart of Manchester (more details to be confirmed) and see if we can apply any of this in Stockport.
We'll be analysing and critiquing existing proposals for the regeneration of the area and counter-mapping.
We'll be quickly getting to know the local, making sure that our final vision is ambitious, exciting, but most importantly hyper-local and for the community in which we are working.
At the end of the action weeks we'll have worked collaboratively to produce a vision for site and wider area. This will involve designing, debating, researching and ambitious thinking.

What if? is a fast moving and grass roots urban consultancy firm. Their interest lye in taking in disused council buildings on the basis of generating ideas about how to repurpose them into social and democratic hot spots that give back into their communities. With a people first approach they stand as socially motivative outliers in a field that is rapidly developing into a profit centred industry. Above all else, they always stand to ask the question, What if?

Hey, I'm Xu Tianxiang (he/they)

I'm an MA student specializing in Adaptive Reuse, driven by its potential to merge sustainability with creative transformations of existing structures. My BArch from the University of Architecture focused on Environmental Design (Interior), where I cultivated a passion for adaptive strategies in historic spaces.

Before the MArch program, I co-led a church renovation project, tackling challenges like preserving heritage while integrating modern interior solutions that comply with regulations. This experience honed my ability to balance historical value with functional innovation.

What excites me most about adaptive reuse is its dual power to reduce environmental waste and preserve cultural narratives. I believe this approach can create architecture that actively benefits both communities and ecosystems.

My key skills include collaborating with diverse stakeholders, conducting deep research to inform design choices, and adapting ideas across disciplines. I’m particularly eager to explore circular design techniques in our projects.

Thrilled to join this group – ready to contribute my expertise and learn from all of you as we build meaningful solutions together!

Hi I'm Akeefah ! (She/ Her)

I am in the & Architecture Atelier and studied my undergraduate degree here at MSA. The atelier & focus on creating common spaces, spaces which are inclusive and encourage diversity. I’ve always enjoyed designing socially cohesive and resilient spaces.

I did my Part 1 at AEW Architects, and I enjoyed it because it was very people driven. I got to experience alternative ways to use CAD and Revit and worked in the retail team. I was involved in many projects at different scales, ranging from commercial office spaces to small refurbishment projects.

Why What if? ... Because it provides a realistic insight into designing feasible spaces that can also increase community cohesion.

Unique Skill – I love communicating and presenting, because you get to express ideas and experiment with software like InDesign etc. I also found that I love talking which helps too!

Hey there, I’m Alexia!

Course: MArch 1
Atelier: CPU

I’m from Romania, but I have been living in Manchester for the past 5 years. I have done my undergraduate at MSA and decided to do my postgraduate course here as well. When I am not working on my next assignment, I'm either dancing and playing volleyball.

During my year in practice, I have worked at FDG, a company that specialises on laboratories and research facilities. I prefer working in Revit, with a bit of Rhino and Grasshopper on the side, but InDesign and Photoshop relax me.

I chose Manchester Climate Alliance because of the opportunity it offers to research some renewable energy sources. I was also attracted to the idea of working on a project for the Victoria Baths since I've seen its interior on so many films and TV series.

Hi everyone, I'm Max.
I’m currently in my first year of March and in the Continuity Atelier. Before this, I completed my BArch at the University of Newcastle. After that, I spent a year on placement in South Africa, where I worked on several large-scale office-to-residential retrofits and urban regeneration masterplans. Following my time there, I spent another year in London working with the firm Howells (formerly Glenn Howells), an AJ100 firm, where I focused on large-scale residential schemes and masterplans both in the UK and across Europe.

My group, Group 13, is working with the Company What if? They are led by a very dynamic and engaging team that have already introduced the MArch Students to a variety of Architects, Landscape Architects, Council delegates, Town Planners and Historians around Stockport who we can continue to work with throughout this project. The brief Is currently very open, but looking at structuring a program for sustainable retro fit to produce community centred buildings is something I’m really interested in and something I think could really standout in a interview portfolio.

A skill I bring to the team is that “I don’t deal in if buts or maybe’s, I deal in absolutes” equally to further this, when working on this project “I want everyone to go out there, enjoy it, but be fucking disciplined with it”. Channelling my ideologies into my digital workflow and team communications is crucial in allowing myself to add moderate, up to significant levels of additional value to any group work dynamic.

Hey, I’m Alex (he/they)

I’m a MArch 1 student in Continuity, an atelier I was drawn to due to its highly pragmatic, grounded and contextual approach to Architecture. I did my BArch at the University of Nottingham, where I particularly focused on inclusive education and housing, as well as adaptive design.

I did my Part 1 at WW+P Architects (formerly Weston Williamson), and continue to work there part time whilst I complete my degree. My work there on the Residential Mixed-Use team is predominantly focused on social housing and civic buildings, and I also get involved with education programmes like Open City’s Accelerate.

What If? particularly appealed to me as I have learnt the value of community is so important, particularly whilst working on social housing projects. What If? Is an exciting proposal to reuse a historically valuable local building and give it community value. It also ties into a bigger vision for the redevelopment of the region, promoting resilience for the existing and future communities.

A skill I bring to the team is my ability to quickly adapt to new situations and challenges, allowing me to get stuck into a short project, like in the upcoming Action Weeks.

Hi there, I’m Roy!

Course: MArch 1
Atelier:Some kind of Nature

I am from China and completed my undergraduate RIBA I studies at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. I have worked at Daniel Stisen Studio in Shanghai and Cocoon Studio in Suzhou. In my practice, I focus on the adaptive reuse and renovation of old buildings, as well as the research and exploration of the locality of architectural culture.

I chose to join the Manchester Climate Alliance because I believe that the climate is critical to the future of each and every one of us. Creating environmentally friendly design solutions that also bring value and meaning to each member of the surrounding community is as important as architecture's role in creating better spaces. Spaces that not only bring about positive change for humans, but also for the other species that share this planet.

I am also very interested in the morphology and structure of buildings. For more information about me,welcome visit my Instagram account: Roy.Wang7

Hi, I’m Xiaoyan! As an MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse student at MSA, I’m passionate about bridging gaps—between old and new, stories and spaces. During my undergrad in Urban Planning, I redesigned historic Irish mines into museums, mimicked Icelandic flora for climate-smart structures, and balanced Hangzhou’s courtyard traditions with modern needs. Now, I’m thrilled to join MSA LIVE’s collaboration with Radio Diamond! Together with undergrads and the Manchester community, we’ll explore creative ways to amplify their voice: reimagining fundraising strategies, expanding public reach, and crafting sustainable futures for cultural spaces. Let’s turn this partnership into a blueprint for how adaptive reuse can empower not just buildings, but communities. Ready to rethink what’s possible? Let’s hit play on this next chapter!

SITE VISIT

On February 19, 2025, our team went to the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team in the Bolton area of Manchester for a site visit. The main purpose of this visit was to communicate in depth with the staff of the rescue team, understand the challenges and needs they face when using the existing site, show them our preliminary design ideas for the project, and listen to their feedback.

During the inspection, we first learned about the layout of the entire site, including buildings, parking areas, and surrounding environmental conditions through aerial photography. From this perspective, we have a more intuitive understanding of the spatial organization of the site and its relationship with the surrounding environment. Subsequently, we visited various areas inside and outside the building, and had face-to-face exchanges with the staff of the rescue team to learn in detail about their needs for the functional functions of the building space in their daily work, as well as the problems existing in the site. For example, the rescue team mentioned that the existing garage space is relatively tight and cannot meet the storage needs of all rescue equipment; at the same time, the functional division of the internal space also needs to be reasonably optimized to improve work efficiency.
Through this field visit, we not only enhanced communication with the rescue team, but also deepened our understanding of the current status and usage needs of the site. Next, we will further optimize and improve our design plan based on the information and suggestions obtained from this investigation, in order to create a more efficient, comfortable and work-oriented architectural space for the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team.

For our first team meeting, Theresa from radio diamond invited us to visit the station in Moss side where we were given a tour. It was a really fun day, they were full of energy and positivity about the project. It was great to see their passion for their work helping the local community. We were shown the studios where the live shows were recorded and the recording studio which they rent out for artists to record music and podcasts. After that we brainstormed ideas about how we could help them to raise money for their DAB licence and how we can help them improve their marketing.

YUANHAO LIANG

Hi, I' am Yuanhao Liang, a student study in MA Architecture And Adaptive Reuse. I am from China, and my background is landscape design.
During my undergraduate studies, I focused on landscape design. Through in-depth research on the natural environment and human activities, I developed my sensitivity to space design, sustainable development, and the vitality of public places. However, in the process of practice, I gradually realized that a large number of old buildings, abandoned spaces, and historical heritage in the city have not been adequately protected and reused. These spaces contain rich historical, cultural, and social values. If they can be redesigned and updated through adaptive reuse, they can not only continue the city's memory, but also bring new vitality and value to the city. I really hope to make progress with you in the future learning process.

Course & Atelier: MA Adaptive Reuse

Current Project in MSA:
I am currently involved in a historic building transformation project in Stockport, which aims to bring a derelict monolithic office building back to life. My design philosophy is to transform the local culture and urban memory into the architectural language by digging deeply into it and subtly integrate it into the old building in a micro-interventional way. On the basis of protecting the original building structure, I hope to preserve the historical memory of the building through careful design, but also inject new vitality into it, making it a link between the past and the future. This process is not only the transformation of the building itself, but also the continuation and innovation of the urban context.

Software + Other Skills:
Sketchup, Rhino, photoshop, AutoCAD, Enscape, Lumion.

Short Introduction:
I am an architectural practitioner with nearly one year's work experience, and I have accumulated some project experience in practice. I have a special interest in small buildings, especially those that reflect humanistic care and respond to social issues.
In my spare time, I love sports and often play basketball to keep my vitality. I also like to experience different life stories through movies. In my spare time, I often travel with friends to explore different urban landscapes, while also delving into cooking in the kitchen and enjoying the fun of creating delicious food. These diverse interests and hobbies enable me to maintain keen observation and creativity in my work.

I am currently working on the adaptive reuse design of a 1970s coal mine factory site. The factory is located in Xinjiang, China, and like many former industrial sites, it is situated in an area that lacks vibrancy due to its proximity to old residential buildings and outdated amenities, in stark contrast to the booming new city centre area. My goal was to revitalise the industrial area, address the infrastructure and commercial gaps while commemorating the coal mining culture and creating a link to the city centre area.

Software + Other Skills:
Sketchup, Rhino, photoshop, AutoCAD, Enscape.

Short Introduction:
I have three years of experience working in architectural design, with exposure to projects with a focus on commercial buildings. I enjoy sports, love drawing and enjoy meeting new friends.

My current studio project is to renovate a building in a forest near Glasgow. This building is a monastery that has been abandoned for a long time, and we are thinking about how we can bring it back into the community, make it more influential and bring back the prosperity of the past. Eventually we decided to transform it into a mixed-use building with a theatre, outdoor activity centre, and gallery space. Extending its radiation to the city of Glasgow and brings more revenue to the site.

YAXUAN ZHANG

Hello everyone, I'm Zhang Yaxuan, a design explorer dedicated to architectural transformation and sustainable regeneration. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Architecture at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), and I graduated from Beijing Forestry University with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design. I have always believed that old buildings are the silent narrators of a city's stories. My designs start from "listening to the memories of space" and focus on infusing old buildings with a soul that fits contemporary life. I am passionate about studying low-intervention renovation strategies, such as preserving the traces of the original structure and activating idle spaces through lightweight materials and flexible zoning, allowing history and modern functions to coexist harmoniously.
Recently, I have been focusing on exploring innovative applications of sustainable materials in old buildings, such as reshaping lighting systems with translucent recycled plastic or restoring wall textures with locally recycled bricks. I look forward to joining forces with like-minded partners to redefine the value of "old" through design, enabling every building to age gracefully and be reborn with elegance.

Name: Marwa Sanad Abdul Hameed Al-Saqqar

Country: Iraq

Course & Atelier: MArch, Some Kind of Nature

Current Project in MSA:
My current project in studio is an adaptive reuse one that proposes a model for regenerative farming and circular agriculture to respond to the effects of agro-industrial globalisation. The existing abandoned structure of a walled garden already exhibits the proper foundations to propose a model as to how architecture can contribute further to addressing the climate and biodiversity crisis through the design of sustainable forms of food production and illustrate how adaptive reuse can be the driver towards implementing nature-friendly farming practices and promoting circularity (cradle-to-cradle) through the design and landscaping. The project evolves from its original function towards a community-oriented space where all walks of life can gather, learn, grow, harvest, cook, rest, and most importantly, care —becoming a community, regenerative farm and centre for agriculture and horticultural education. This studio project’s aspirations are closely intertwined with what Local Food First advocates for at Wildbrook and in this MSA Live project.

Software + Other Skills:
Adobe Suite, AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, Vray, Enscape, Twinmotion, Lumion, Therm 7.6, and other construction and fabrication skills (laser cutting, CNC, 3D printing, wood construction, sewing, and knitting).

Short Introduction:
I have been working in the architectural industry for a few years, so it has been quite some time since I have been back in academia. It is interesting to see how much pedagogy has shifted to reprioritise architecture’s impact on society and build meaningful relationships —beyond human connections. I am very passionate about exploring the power that architecture has in shaping spaces politically, socially, and environmentally dissecting how design can be used as a tool for violence and oppression while also having the potential to foster resistance and advocate for community and kinship. I am very excited to work with everyone on this team to support Local Food First’s endeavours to develop a wonderful farming space that works with nature rather than against it and address food insecurity within the region.

Course & Atelier: MArch, FLUX

Current Project in MSA:
My current project within studio focusses on food insecurity, the lack of community building and a way in which we can address these concerns. The design I have created is a multipurpose building, housing a food bank, a cooking school, and a circular retail quarter, all three segments combining to address the stigma surrounding asking for help and to bridge the gap of food insecurity between those who require help and those who can provide it. The ideology of my scheme aligns completely with this project.

Software + Other Skills:
Adobe Suite, Revit, Sketchup, Autodesk

Short Introduction:
Architecture and the possibility to incite change through design is something I am very passionate about, creating connections between people and places in ways other disciplines could not.

Outside of architecture, I love painting and sketching for fun as I find it very relaxing. I also love baking and love to test new recipes. I am very excited to work on this project with Local Food First and hope that we can create a scheme that will make a difference for the site.

Hey! I'm Matt. I'm a student here at MSA studying for a master's in architecture. I am currently in the FLUX atelier, which focuses on ‘play’ in architecture and other unorthodox approaches to civic design and community engagement. I studied my undergrad at the Canterbury School of Architecture, and after that, I worked in practice in Guernsey, in the Channel Islands for 2 years. My favourite architecture includes brutalist, classical and anything a bit different. I’m excited for the opportunity to collaborate with other students and with Life Leisure to re-imagine some outdoor spaces, which frankly need some re-imagining.

I am particularly interested in architectural heritage, and how we can preserve it through adaptive reuse schemes. My professional experience and time at the MSA, have given me the necessary skills required for real-world projects like ‘Tyldesley Spark’.

I received my bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Nottingham, where I developed skills such as: AutoCAD, Sketchup, Adobe Suite, Midjourney and rendering engines. After completing my undergraduate degree, I worked for a small practice based in London called ‘Architect That’, where I contributed to a mix of residential and commercial projects focusing on adaptive reuse. This fuelled my passion for historic architecture, which I am excited to build upon throughout this project.

I chose this MSA Live project as it aligns with my interests in heritage and adaptive reuse. The potential for our work to be realized is something that attracted me. The collaborators at Tyldesley CIC are friendly and enthusiastic to make a change, something I would like to be a part of.

Hi! My name is Pat and I am a MArch 1 student and a part of the Continuity Atelier.
I finished my undergrad at University for The Creative Arts in 2021 and since have spent the past 2.5 years in practice at dMFK, a London based studio where I spent most of my time working predominantly on high-end commercial retrofit projects within stages 3-4.
I am detail driven, which is why in practice I really enjoyed working within stages 3-4 and why I chose to join the Continuity Atelier. Our project for Monton Unitarian Church is super exciting and I think my interests really compliment what we are trying to achieve with it along with the deliverables we are setting out to produce. My previous BA projects have always been some guise of a community led scheme so it’s exciting to be working on a live project where Monton’s local community is going to be so heavily involved.

Hey there, I’m Zhi!

Course: MArch 1
Atelier: Some Kind of Nature

I’m from Malaysia and grew up in a multiracial background, so picking up languages comes pretty easily to me, one of my little superpowers!

I graduated from the University of Sheffield and have been working in interior design, focusing on commercial spaces like workspaces, retail, and hospitality. I’m pretty handy when it comes to joinery and technical details, and you’ll usually find me deep in Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, or SketchUp, bringing designs to life.

I chose Manchester Climate Alliance because I’m interested in eco-strategies and how they can work within local building laws, especially for listed buildings. Plus, renewable energy fascinates me, and I’d love to explore how these ideas can shape future projects, whether in my second year or even further down the line.

When I’m not geeking out over architecture and design, you’ll probably find me hiking up a hill, going for a run, or whipping up some delicious Asian food. My speciality? Chicken Satay is guaranteed to make anyone smile!

Hi, I’m Ada! I have been in Manchester for the past 6 years, doing my BA at MSA after moving from Romania! During my 3 years in practice, I worked on large scale residential projects as well as offices and educational architecture all around Manchester.

Now in my first masters year at MSA, I have become passionate about ornament and detail as well as storytelling in architecture. Being in the Continuity atelier has definitely allowed me to expand on these passions! My skills include communication, problem solving and software such as Revit, the Adobe Suite and Enscape. I was also part of the MSSA zine in my undergrad where I developed physical skills such as bookbinding and zine making.

I have already had the opportunity to experience MSA Live as an undergraduate, therefore I am looking forward to help steer this year’s project and create a beautiful solution for engaging children in the Poetry Library at MMU!

Hi, my name’s Nicole and I’m studying in MArch 1, within the Continuity Atelier.
After graduating with a bachelor’s in architecture from De Montfort University, Leicester I went into my Part 1 year out, working for DHA in Birmingham. I was lucky enough to work on a range of projects but particularly enjoyed the conservation work, so I’m excited to be working on a site with the beautiful, historic Monton Unitarian church. Being in the continuity atelier, we have a focus on designing within the context of the existing and I look forward to designing the community garden to add to the wonderful existing site.
During my year of travelling last year, I spent a month building a medial dispensary in Fiji, so have a little bit of construction experience and am excited to get ‘hands-on’ during the intensive weeks building in May. I don’t have particularly green fingers, but I’m looking forward to getting messy and planting with the raised beds with the community so I can learn and then plant in my own garden. I am excited to get the wider community of Monton involved and to work with undergrads to design and deliver something exciting that everyone can enjoy together!

We are Group 5, working with Monton Unitarian Church to transform the unused Boddan lodge grounds, an ex-bowls green next to the church, into a community garden and venue. We are lucky to have the valued input of the church committee and are supported by Manchester Urban Diggers who have experience in creating community gardens.

The project has two stages:
1. To design and create a Community Garden, including raised planters, within the intensive week. We hope to get stuck in clearing out the garden and building the planters, ready to be opened on the last day for a community party!
2. Additionally, we will design a Pagoda to be situated on the hard standing where Boddan Lodge used to sit. This will provide some shelter for events in the garden and even a wedding venue for the church. We hope to design the pagoda and create a cost breakdown to make it clear for Anna the Reverend to employ builders to bring to life.

Unitarianism is a religion that welcomes each individual for themselves, complete with their beliefs, doubts and questions, making it a particularly welcoming community. We are excited to work with the church committee to design something that meets their needs and to all get stuck in together to create it during the intensive weeks, leaving them with a space that brings the whole community of Monton together.

Situated just a couple of minutes' walk from St. Helens station, the site sits on the corner of two streets, aptly named 'Street and a Half'. The opportunity here offers near complete freedom to reinvent the existing space, either digitally or physically. As a town, St. Helens has a deep cultural identity for the locals, so any engagement (or lived experience) with the space must be meaningful to the local people, bringing them in to be a part of the high streets they hope to reinvigorate.
