On the 28th of January, we had our second meeting with Mike and Allie to discuss our initial ideas for involving the community in more active events at Victoria Baths.

In addition, we have also discussed the upcoming engagement workshops that the clients will be organizing. These workshops are going to be a key part of shaping the future direction of the project, and we can’t wait to see how they’ll help foster even more community involvement.

It has been an inspiring process, and we're really starting to see how these events can bring people together in meaningful ways.

Hi! I'm Benedetta, currently doing my exchange semester at MSA and attending MArch1 Infra. I'm originally from Italy and completed my Bachelor in Architectural Design at the Polytechnic of Milan.

Throughout my academic and professional journey, l've developed a strong interest in adaptive reuse projects, exploring how architecture can give new life to existing spaces.
I recently had the opportunity to experiment hands-on with reuse strategies during a recent workshop, where we transformed discarded materials into urban furniture.
I'm now continuing my research in my current atelier and I'm looking forward to engage with the Gorse Hill community!

Hello,

I’m Ella an Interior Architecture graduate from Liverpool John Moores University and a current student of Architecture and Adaptive Reuse.

My main interest within architectural design is the reuse of existing buildings, allowing them to have a new lease of life but also celebrating the historical footprint of what is already built. I love buildings which are full of character and hope that I will be able to work with listed buildings such as churches, industrial structures and many more in my proffesional practice.

Having the opportunity to work on Waterbarn Baptist Church is very exciting and relevant to my interests. I’m looking forward to proposing a plan to restore and repurpose the church with my MSA
Live group and hope we give the Valley Heritage team lots of positive ideas.

On Monday, 17th February 2025, we had our first virtual meeting in the evening. This meeting was essential to align our thoughts and gain a better understanding of our stakeholder, Mike’s aims for Victoria Baths.

We discussed the site conditions observed during our visit and proposed potential strategies and ideas for Victoria Baths. Additionally, we allocated tasks to each group member and planned another site visit, along with a digital workshop for our new team members. This will ensure that everyone is proficient with the same software, facilitating smoother coordination.

Name: Jichuan Ding
Course: Architecture and adaptive reuse

I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering in June 2019 in China and have been working for 4 years. During the four years of professional work experience I have accumulated, I have frequently travelled to building construction sites to conduct inspections and witnessed projects from initial conception to final completion. This practical experience has enabled me to assess the feasibility and innovative nature of projects. In addition, I qualified as a Class Ⅱ Registered Architect with technical knowledge in building structures, sustainability, materials, fire services and indoor environments.
I have a special interest in the practice of adaptive reuse and am committed to integrating the concept of sustainability into the conservation of historic buildings. Through rational structural reinforcement, material selection and spatial optimisation, I hope to revitalise the building while respecting its original character, bringing new social and economic value to the local community.
I am very excited to join this heritage restoration project. I hope to continue to learn through teamwork and work with everyone to explore ways to preserve heritage while incorporating modern needs for the Tyldesley community and creating a sustainable built environment.

On 10/02/25, We took an exciting first trip to the Victoria Baths in the north of Manchester with our clients.
Victoria Baths is Grade II* listed and widely recognised as Britain’s finest historic swimming pool. First opened in 1906, the Baths has played an important part in the health and well-being of local people and is now a very popular heritage, events and community venue.

When the Baths closed in 1993, the local community campaigned vigorously to try to prevent the closure. The Friends of Victoria Baths set up the Victoria Baths Trust, a charity which aims to repair and maintain the building in order to bring it fully back into public use.

Since then significant restoration has taken place and the building now has over 30,000 visitors a year enjoying a wide range of activities including exhibitions, festivals and weddings. There is still a lot of work to be done and the Trust remains determined to bring the amazing building back to its full potential.

We will focus on the current community value of historical heritage and try to utilize and revitalize it in a sustainable and green way. We will also explore the possibility of using historical buildings to provide community energy.

Hi, I’m Ellie I am currently doing my MA in Architecture and Adaptive reuse.
My bachelors is in Interior Design which I finished in 2023, after finishing I worked as an Interior Designer where I developed a strong foundation in spatial planning, materials and user-centred design.
With a keen interest in designing interiors in keeping with their history I felt that the two went hand in hand.
I am excited to be working on the Agecroft Cemetery project as we will have the challenge of protecting the history of the building but making it useable and accessible for the community, while remaining mindful of the importance of the building.
I am looking forward to the action weeks where we can work together, brain storm ideas and come up with a proposal that is mindful, inclusive and timeless.

MArch 1, Some Kind of Nature

Hello :) I’m Jirong. I am a student at Atelier SKN and completed my undergraduate studies at Newcastle University.

Since my undergraduate years, I have been deeply passionate about the revival of urban culture. I believe that a city’s cultural appeal isn’t defined by its size or population, and Bradford 2025 exemplifies this as a vibrant and ambitious project. Being a part of such an initiative allows everyone to immerse themselves in this dynamic atmosphere!

In addition to the architectural software skills, I enjoy expressing my ideas through hand drawing and creating physical models. I truly appreciate the "work in progress" process, as it enables me to experience a project in greater detail and depth.

On 25/02/25, we took an exciting first trip to Nelson and the 3B Systems space with our collaborator Michael. With our notebooks, cameras, and plenty of ideas, we explored the town, toured the site, and got a strong sense of its potentials and limitations.

A big focus was on designing engaging spaces for the local youth group while respecting the existing church building. We sketched, took photos, and recorded our thoughts, bouncing around ideas on how to make the space more dynamic, welcoming, and flexible.

By the end of the visit, we left with tons of inspiration, a clearer vision, and plenty of excitement! We can’t wait to bring it to life!

Possibility Machine 2.0: Design Manifesto

The Possibility Machine 2.0 is more than a trolley! It is a mobile catalyst for creativity, conversation, and community. Building upon the original project, we aim to expand its potential, making it more adaptable, sustainable, and engaging for all. We believe in open-ended creativity, where public spaces become platforms for artistic expression and social interaction. This new version will be a transformative, modular structure that encourages collaboration across generations, making art accessible to those who may not traditionally engage with it. We envision a trolley that is not just a tool but an experience. It will be an evolving artwork that responds to its environment and the people who interact with it.

The Possibility Machine 2.0 will explore:

+Mobility & Accessibility – ensuring it is lightweight, adaptable, and easy to transport.

+Sustainability & Innovation – integrating renewable materials and environmental awareness.

+Social Engagement – fostering a sense of ownership and participation within the community.

+Creativity Without Limits – allowing for artistic freedom through dynamic and interactive surfaces.

This project is a statement and a belief that art should move, evolve, and belong to everyone. It is an open invitation to imagine, play, and create new possibilities.

MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse

Hey! I’m Ziyang Zhou, a MA student in Architecture and Adaptive Reuse
. I am excited to continue my study in MSA!

I am particularly interested in repurposing and shaping architectural and spatial approaches that can make existing buildings more sustainable and more adaptable to different users and needs. I like to think about how people think about reuse and urban development in different cultural contexts and different urban forms. Places and memories are important to me in my thinking and design process, which helps us to connect the past with the future, while preserving the local character and culture.

At other times, I love the outdoors, whether it's hiking or sitting in the park, I enjoy these times of being close to nature. When I'm at home, I like to play with Lego and some video games. All these can give me some design inspiration. I also enjoy sports, swimming or basketball, the dopamine from these activities makes me happy!

MArch 1, Continuity

Hey! I’m Gabriel, and I am a March 1 student studying in the atelier Continuity. I completed my undergrad at Leeds Beckett University and excited to continue my studies in Manchester.

I’ve always been interested in the architectural language of adaptive reuse projects, especially the juxtaposing language of the old and the new. I think it’s important to celebrate the existing layers of the history of the building, and also allowing the imperfections of the past to shine through its design. This is why I wanted to engage with this project as it is holistic with my beliefs as the buildings in Bradford contain a deep relationship with the evolution of the town and needs to be resurfaced to the diverse community.

I have a keen eye for the small details in things, which perfectly translates into my love for photography, films and sketching. In some of my free time, I enjoy being active outside of the studio, like training in volleyball, keeping fit in the gym and also reading books to inspire my creativity towards my design in architecture.

MArch 1, Infrastructure Space

Hey! I’m Laura, a MArch 1 student in the Infrastructure Space atelier. I completed my BA at MSA and am excited to continue my journey here!

I’m particularly interested in large-scale land management and the ways design can shape landscapes to be more functional, immersive, and meaningful. I love creating narratives through design—whether that means reimagining how spaces evolve over time or crafting environments that tell a deeper story. Sustainability plays a huge role in this, ensuring that the places we design don’t just serve people but support all species that inhabit them.

In my free time, I love getting lost in hands-on creative work—carving linocut prints, giving stick-and-poke tattoos, or simply spending time in nature. I find inspiration in organic forms, textures, and the patterns found in the natural world, which often influence my creative work both in and outside of architecture.

Initial Digital Modelling: The Learning Space

In order to prepare for the collaboration weeks, considering the requirement of visuals and spatial proposals for our collaborator, we have begun to model the existing space and its surrounding rooms.

We have currently modelled all of the walls and physical features of the space, however we've left the exhibit stands and display cases out, so that there will be greater flexibility for model making and developing when the time comes.

Site Visit: Portland Basin Museum

On 29/01/2025 we visited the site for the first time, not only to experience the site but to interact with and meet in person with our collaborator, Rachel Cornes.

We had a quick tour of the museum and its current exhibits and displays, before being shown the project space, and having an initial discussion about its current issues and the potential for its future. We had also prepared an initial presentation, with our first ideas and images, to help push forward the discussion and start to develop ideas with Rachel.

After this we were free to look around and take photos and inspect the space, to fully understand the potential and the limitations. We were also able to get some drone photography, to help understand the context of the museum, especially considering its unique location at the intersection of 3 canals.

Hello! I'm Kim and I'm currently study on the Master of Architecture Course.

Before studying at Manchester School of Architecture, I worked in a rural based practice in the Ribble Valley for two years. The projects I worked on in this time mainly focused on new build dwellings, extensions and conversions of buildings such as barns, pubs & community spaces.

From this experience I have also gained valuable knowledge working within conservation areas, AONBs and with Listed Buildings.

As someone from Lancashire, getting to work on a project in my home county is particularly exciting. I am looking forward to working with Valley Heritage and my peers at MSA to help restore Waterbarn Chapel and graveyard into an asset for the local community.

The 178 year old chapel has fallen into a poor state of repair in recent years with the roof collapsing in 2011 and was damaged by two fires in 2022 & 2023. As unfortunate as these events were, they allow for a boarder range of possibilities for the building going forward.

After our initial meeting with our collaborators, we visited the site in the heart of Droylsden. Lena, Carol, and Nigel from Tameside Council guided us through the area, offering valuable insights into the site's history, current state, and development potential.

Course: MA Architecture & Adaptive Reuse

It is my first year in Manchester. After I finished my bachelor of forest degree in Vancouver, I did a four-month internship at a construction company. And then I worked as an assistant for interior designer for one year. I will bring my passion and skills into any group work.

I have a total interest in dance and music, which led me to get involved in relevant clubs during my undergraduate studies, which added a lot of fun to my life.

I chose this group in order to gain more experience of collaboration related to real projects and to understand the policies and regulations related to the conversion of buildings in the UK context.

The Droylsden MSA Live project revitalises Droylsden, a town east of Manchester, by enhancing public health, community engagement, and urban greening. A key initiative is the development of a community garden to strengthen local connections and improve accessibility.

To further support connectivity, the project emphasises pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and improved wayfinding to increase footfall in the town centre and boost local businesses.

During Action Week, potential outputs will include mapping, 3D modelling, renderings, and alternative layout options for the community garden. Ultimately, the project aspires to create a healthier, more sustainable, and community-driven urban environment for Droylsden.

Hello, my name is Alliah, and I am a 5th-year MArch student in the AND Atelier.

In 2023, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Reading, where I focused on cultural and vernacular architecture through a linear and historiographical visual art style. I also have a strong interest in pedagogy and construction detailing.

I spent a year in industry working in London as both a Part 1 Architectural Assistant and an Architectural Building Regulations Consultant. During this time, I managed projects from appointment and concept design through to snagging and handover. My experience at one of the UK’s leading firms in luxury retail architecture allowed me to operate on both micro and macro scales, managing projects, handling tenders, and engaging directly with clients.

While studying at MSA, I have developed a keen interest in ultra-sustainability and community development, which I explore through iterative rendering and visualisation. I aim to continually refine my skills in software such as V-Ray, Lumion, and Twinmotion while also improving my pedagogy skills to help others optimise their own.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy playing the piano, keeping fit through horse riding and running, and, most importantly, getting a good night's sleep!

Please feel free to contact me on Mahasin.Nadeem@stu.mmu.ac.uk. I am excited to begin our work together!

Aim:
The project aims to inspire real-world change by activating and rejuvenating the underused public space at the Milton Park skate park through a bespoke physical intervention or series of interventions. Positioned within the “alternative” cultural sphere, the project will engage with local people, particularly young residents, to highlight new possibilities for the space, foster social connections, and promote Alsager as a destination. It will coincide with the “Alternate Alsager” event, combining music, food, and street art to create a fun, engaging, and safe environment for self-expression.

Output:
A site-specific installation that interacts with the place and its surroundings, designed and prototyped based on insights from community engagement. The process will include speaking with local people, particularly young residents, with discussions and sketches recorded and presented using other potential deliverables.

Hello there ! I am a first-year Masters of Architecture student. I completed my undergraduate degree in Bath which finished in 2023. Shortly after graduating, I worked at an architecture firm focusing on restoring and maintaining farmsteads by adding new additions and respecting tradition.

Continuing along this theme with the Agecroft Cemetery project is something I look forward to. The building and site offer an interesting and meaningful project which will engage with the community.

Looking forward to the action weeks where we can work together to create a proposal that will revitalise the area surrounding the chapel, bringing a sense of community around the building.

Hi Everyone, I am Merly Sara Wilson currently doing the Adaptive reuse program offered by MSA. I have completed my bachelors of architecture from College of Architecture Trivandrum from Kerala, after which I gained experience in various architectural companies both in India and Middle East within a year. I have gained work experience having done commercial and residential projects in these respective countries which helped me develop a context based design ideas and analogies.
I think architecture should be fun and my favorite part about it is the ideation and the collaboration phase. I love the feeling of being a part of something big which makes me most interested in community related projects that could help them in a longer run, creating a sense of oneness within the community.
Apart from architecture I also involve myself in painting and reading. I also love travelling and exploring different art and architecture of the world. All of which seems to have helped me in my architectural visualization journey.
I look forward to the MSA live collaboration, hoping that it will help us create ideal and practical architectural solutions.
Exited to meet with you all soon!!!

Hi, I’m Loh Jia Jun!
I’m an MArch student in the atelier of Non-Standard Habitat design, focusing on adaptive reuse, speculative materials, and non-standard construction methods. My journey in architecture started with a Bachelor’s degree at Taylor’s University, where I built a strong foundation in architectural design, spatial planning, urban planning designs and technical drawings.

I’ve gained hands-on experience in both developer and architecture firms. As a Project Management Assistant at a developer firm, I was involved in construction site coordination and project oversight. Later, I worked as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at an architecture firm, where I focused on design development, technical drawings, and detailing.

My design approach balances minimalism, material innovation, and sustainability, creating spaces that are functional yet emotionally engaging. I’m particularly interested in architecture that blends natural materials, bold geometries, and cutting-edge technology, shaping environments that respond to both people and place.

I’m always excited to collaborate and exchange ideas, pushing architectural thinking forward. Let’s create something meaningful together!

Outside of architecture, I have a deep passion for photography and videography, capturing not just built environments but also everyday moments.

Feel free to connect with me at kenneth11023938@gmail.com – let’s build something great!
