29/01/25 | Visiting the Space and Establishing the Output

To kick off our project, we visited the library and met the collaborators. This gave us the opportunity to explore the space and understand what the team are hoping to achieve through MSALive.

Their primary focus is a children’s craft station – a self-guided, flexible workspace with storage for art supplies and space to display the poems and zines created. The design should reflect the nature-inspired theme already present in the children’s corner of the library.

We also explored ideas for a wayfinding tool - a magnetic, low-tech signage system that can help visitors navigate the library. We intend to leave this as a concept design that the library can develop further if they choose.

Sustainability and adaptability were key themes in our discussions and will be central to the design process.

The Collaborator

We are very excited to be collaborating with the MMU Poetry Library as part of MSALive 2025! This vibrant and welcoming library is located in the Grosvenor Building, right at the heart of the MMU Campus.

The team includes Becky (Director), Martin (Programme Manager), and Kaye (Education Manager). Being the first poetry library in the North West, they are super passionate about creating a place where everyone can ‘explore and enjoy poetry’.

The library has a lot to offer from a dedicated Manchester collection and multilingual poetry to zines, journals and a children’s corner. They also host a wide range of events and exhibitions throughout the year.

Hi! I’m Harry. After studying architecture at undergraduate level in Nottingham, I worked for a year and a bit in Leeds for GSSArchitecture. There I was able to work with various clients, mostly higher education, and hone my skills on software like Revit and Photoshop. Moving to Manchester to study is a new experience for me, being from the northeast I’d never been to Manchester before, and it’s certainly living up to the expectations!

Studying in the Continuity Atelier in MArch 1, I have developed a great appreciation for the layers of history that architecture can provide in our day to day lives, and the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of our cities. Outside of architecture, I’m a massive Newcastle United fan, howay the lads.

Working with Manchester Poetry library for the design of the children’s corner is going to be a great opportunity to engage with the community, and I’m really excited to see what happens!

First Site Visit

We visited the venue for the first time and kate harrison, service manager at Healthy Me Healthy Communities CIC, joined us for a tour of the current state of the garden. As well as the vegetables planted on the site, and some dilapidated pergola. and learnt in conversation how the previous gardens came to be. What their needs are today. What they most desire the garden to look like and what kind of space they envision that would help them work and be more beneficial to the community. And it gave us some ideas to think about.

First meeting

At the first meeting with our clients at Manchester Technology Center, Amanda, one of our clients, told us about their non-profit organization 'Healthy Me Healthy Communities'. They are dedicated to bringing vibrancy to their community and helping people with housing, and financial and mental health support. The clients then introduced us to the site and their expectations for the design direction.

Partners : Gorton Center

The Gorton Center is a community facility in Manchester operated by Healthy Me Healthy Communities (HMHC). It began as a paint factory and has since been transformed into a hub for food, welfare, training and enterprise.

The space provides health and social services for local residents (many of whom are disabled, live with long-term unhealthy physical and mental health conditions, come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, are older, live in poverty, are refugees or asylum seekers and are LGBTQ). As part of HMHC's mission to reduce health inequalities and promote community engagement. It also organizes events, offers space for rent, and runs community grocers, among other activities.

Their vision is to have a good community garden for growing, learning, and healthy activities, and would have some integration with the historic paint factory.HMHC envisions the garden as an extension of their existing wide range of offerings for the local community and stakeholders.

2nd Meeting!

Date: 12th February 2025

This meeting was organized to discuss some design ideas we had for the project with our collaborators. We decided to compile some design references and precedent ideas to show the collaborators, as well as draft a visual of our proposed design.

Overall Sally and Beth were excited and quite satisfied with our ideas, only sharing some minor comments about them.
Posted 11 Mar 2025 08:54
Getting to know our collaborator: Beth!

Beth is the school's own professional musician who, in our eyes, totally excels in providing the children quality AND fun musical experience. She leads a variety of musical sessions for the children, such as group jamming sessions, one-to-one music therapy sessions and even leads the school's choir and rock band!
Posted 11 Mar 2025 08:20
Getting to know our collaborator: Sally!

Sally is the Head teacher of Delemere School. Based on our conversations and meetings with her, we can affirm that she is immensely passionate about providing the highest quality of education to all of the school's children regardless of needs or ability.

"Our mission statement is “Together, we Make a Difference …” and we achieve this by creating a personalised curriculum and unique learning journey for every child"

First Site Visit!

Date: 29th January 2025

Delamere School is located in Urmston, a town in Trafford with a residential feel. We visited on a Wednesday so that we could observe how the school's musician, Beth, uses the music studio for her classes.

Upon reaching the site, Sally welcomed us and gave a tour of the school. Honestly, it is quite an impressive school! We were very fascinated by the various facilities this school offered (They had climbing walls, a sensory room and even a swimming pool!).

Sally also explained her ideas for the proposed upgraded music studio. Overall, the proposal should include considerations for students with mobility and sensory impairment. The space should be accessible and not overstimulating. Beth also suggested for creative ideas to store and take out the musical instruments more efficiently.

This site visit was definitely an eye-opener as we got to observe how children with various special needs are cared for, and how space plays a crucial role in their wellbeing and education. After the site visit, the team was even more motivated to do a good job for this project~

1st MSA Live meetup!

Date: 4th December 2024

This was our initial meeting with the whole team as well as our collaborator Sally, who is the Head Teacher of Delemere School.

Sally briefly explained the school's background and enthusiastically encouraged us to visit the school so that we could observe the learning environment for ourselves.

Sally also mentioned that her vision for this project is to definitely make it a reality in the near future so that the precious children of Delamere School can experience high-quality music education.

We all found that Sally's enthusiasm and energy were infectious, and we are all super excited to work on this project together!

Hi, I'm Ke Han.
I am from Malaysia.
I completed my undergraduate degree at the Manchester School of Architecture and am currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at CPU Atelier.

I am confident in using Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, InDesign, and physical modeling.

My interests include designing with a clear narrative, ensuring that every thought process behind it has a strong justification. Besides that, I enjoy working with both digital and physical mediums, allowing me to experiment with both the real and virtual worlds. Outside of architecture, I also enjoy writing short stories, watching K-dramas, playing badminton and chess, and traveling.

I am excited to work with Brick by Brick and Oswald Road Primary School to see how the younger generation thinks outside the box and expresses their creativity. This opportunity inspires me to share knowledge that might encourage them to explore architecture in the future.

Hi, I’m Zuzanna :)

I’m from Wejherowo in Northern Poland. For my bachelor’s degree, I studied at the University of Liverpool, where I was a member of the Heritage Related Design Studio.

After graduating, I moved to Winchester, where I worked at Adam Knibb Architects. During my two years in practice, I gained experience in residential architecture, including heritage-based and new build sustainable projects. Currently, I work as an architectural freelancer while focusing on my Part 2 degree.

I’m interested in sustainable building solutions, so for my current SKN project, I’ve been exploring the use of mycelium and hempcrete as building materials. I’m excited to test these materials on-site with our group and the volunteers from the Landing.

When I’m not in front of my laptop working on my project (which rarely happens), I enjoy traveling, practicing yoga, or baking.

First site visit...

We met on-site with the collaborator to discuss the project, and conduct a LIDAR survey of the existing building.

Although showing signs of being unoccupied for 15 years, the building is in much better condition than we had initially thought, and the client talked us through their requirements for the renovation. We were also able meet the prospective tenant that will occupy the retail unit upon completion, so there are multiple layers to consider when designing the adaptive reuse scheme.

To the rear of the building is a courtyard and former stable building which are accessible from the street. It is clear that these have lots of potential, and as the collaborator is keen to see ideas for how this space could be converted into an exciting, community-based initiative.

Part of a wider initiative...

Our project sits within a wider effort to regenerate Tyldesly High Street, which over time has seen low-quality shopfronts and businesses find their way into the conservation area.

Our scheme (highlighted orange) sits centrally amongst a number of sites highlighted by Historic England (blue) as opportunities for projects to restore the high street to its Victorian roots.

This is the room!
Introduction to our project:

Our project, SenseScape, focuses on children, especially those in their early school years. We are creating the interior of a room in the basement of the Manchester Museum, which is right next to other educational spaces where children's workshops take place regularly. As the basement space is often used by schools, our room aims to not only serve as a place of engagement but also as a space where children can feel safe and supported. The project will bring together sustainability and culture, and the room will have a therapeutic, sensory focus, engaging children's senses of sight, touch, sound, and hearing.

What our Action Weeks will look like?

During the Action Weeks, you can expect an exciting workshop experience! As our project connects with the museum's collections, we can't wait to host a site visit where our collaborators will kindly show us the room and the exhibitions. We are also planning to collaborate with Pinc College, which will give us great insight into designing educational spaces focusing on different sensory needs. We're also thrilled to share that one of our future prospects might include an exhibition of our project outputs right in the room we are designing.
It's going to be an inspiring project with plenty of opportunities for creative exploration!

Catchup 5 – MSA Live project aims with Emily

After the first few weeks of group work and collaboration, we had developed a set of base images and draft posters for our MSA Live project. We presented them to Emily, who gave us valuable feedback on which design worked best. After considering her input, we agreed on a final poster that reflected the culmination of great teamwork and creative thinking. Emily’s feedback helped us refine the concept and make sure it aligned with the stakeholder’s vision and MSA live brief. We also discussed the next steps, including our plans to get creative with the kids at the school by running fun, hands-on workshops to engage them in the design process. It’s exciting to see the project taking shape!
Posted 10 Mar 2025 20:20
Catch up 4 - Meeting with Emily

We had our first catchup with Emily to discuss our MSA Live project at Prospect Vale Primary School. We ran through the stakeholder’s vision for creating a more engaging and functional early years learning environment, focusing on both indoor and outdoor spaces. Emily gave us some valuable feedback on our initial ideas, including creating interactive learning zones, sensory-friendly areas, and flexible play spaces. We also discussed how to use the project outputs to help the school secure funding. It was really helpful to get her insight, and we’re feeling confident about the direction we’re heading in!

Meeting 1 - Meeting the Collaborator:

Near the end of last year, we had the exciting opportunity to meet our enthusiastic stakeholder, Luke, who shared his vision for the project. It was a fantastic chance for us to understand exactly what he had in mind and align our design approach with his goals. We also took the opportunity to present some of our initial ideas, which sparked a really productive discussion. Luke’s passion and clear direction gave us a strong foundation to build on, and it was a great way to kickstart this exciting project that we hope will have a lasting impact on the school’s future.

Catchup 3 - meeting as a group

Before our first meeting with Emily, we got together as a group of master’s students to reflect on the incredible experience of our site visit. It was a great opportunity to share our thoughts and ideas, align our project aims, and discuss the potential impact we could have on the children’s lives. We also used this time to delegate tasks within the group, ensuring that everyone had a fair role and that each member could contribute equally. It was clear that everyone was just as eager and motivated to help in whatever capacity they could. The meeting left us feeling inspired and united in our goal to create a meaningful and lasting change for the kids.

Hello everyone! Meet the collaborators!

We're excited about the upcoming Action Weeks and can't wait to share the effects of our collaboration with Manchester Museum! The museum's mission is to become the most inclusive, imaginative, and caring place you'll ever visit. As part of this project, we're working closely with Hannah and Wendy from Civic Engagement and Education, whose passion and dedication make this collaboration a true pleasure.
We are also closely collaborating with Pinc College, which works in unique ways with creative approaches to education. They have worked with groups such as the Greater Manchester Autism Consortium, which gives us a fantastic opportunity to create a space where every young visitor feels heard and valued. Through this collaboration, we aim to design a sensory room in one of the museum's spaces that will be accessible and supportive for children with different sensory needs. What's more, we hope to provide a space that supports and offers them comfort and the chance to engage in museum experiences fully.

We're looking forward to presenting the results of this exciting collaboration!

Day 0: Exploring Bradford: A Site Visit That Sparked Our Vision

Our recent visit to Bradford marked a turning point in the development of our project. The route we took, thoughtfully curated by Jade Jade Ibegbuna, our collaborator from The City Council, took us on a journey through some of the city’s most iconic historic buildings—and left us inspired to create a similar experience for the wider public.
As we moved through these incredible spaces, we were struck by how many of Bradford’s residents might not even know they are welcome to explore them. This realisation became a key part of our motivation: to design an experience that invites people to rediscover their city and feel a sense of belonging in its remarkable heritage sites.

The city is experiencing a cultural renaissance, embracing its diversity, youthful population, and rich artistic heritage. Bradford’s strength lies in its people—one of the most diverse communities in the UK, where cultures, languages, and traditions come together to form a vibrant social fabric. It’s this diversity that makes the city so dynamic and full of creative potential, and it’s central to the story we want to tell through this project.

We visited Bradford Live, currently undergoing renovation and due to reopen soon—we were incredibly lucky to get a glimpse inside before its official launch, thanks to Christophe. We also explored the Media Museum (with Dean), the Alhambra Theatre (with Laura and Penny), and City Hall (with Len). Each building offered a glimpse into the city's rich architectural heritage and the care that went into shaping its identity.

More reflections on each building (and the amazing people who guided us) coming soon—huge thanks to Jade, Rachel, Christophe, Dean, Laura, Penny, Len, Jamie, and everyone who joined our community roundtable.

Catchup 2 - Our first site visit to Prospect Vale Primary School.

All of the team members met at the site on the 27th of January with the Headteacher. Luke (Headteacher of the school) gave us a tour around the site and into the chosen rooms for the project.
During the visit, we were able to understand the scale of the project, assess the suitability of proposals and understand the requirements of the space. We were also able to gain first-hand experience from teachers who use the space daily and understand some of the constraints they are having with the current design of the space.
Luke shared with us the feedback from teachers and students using the space, this enabled us to understand what worked well in the space and where there were necessary changes needed.
We were also able to access the current outdoor space and see first-hand the current lack of indoor-outdoor connectivity and how this can be rethought.

Hi, my name is Jonatan and I’m a MArch 1 student, joining as part of the FLUX Atelier at MSA. I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Newcastle University in 2022 and have went on to work on a variety of small- and large-scale residential projects at BPTW in London during my Part I placement year.

I have always been drawn to the detailed aspects of architecture and enjoy understanding how things work by making them, which is why I am particularly excited to design the pagoda as part of our proposal. My hands-on experience with timber construction began at a young age, working on DIY projects around the house with my father. I’m really looking forward to working with the Monton Unitarian Church community to create a garden that is as much about the shared experience of creating as it is about the final space itself.

@TheGrange in Blackpool is a large community hub on the Grange Park estate. It has been highlighted as a centre of best practice for engaging local residents in wellbeing activity through the support provided by
the team at Groundwork.
The site includes a library, café, theatre, community farm, free to use laundrette and various meeting rooms.
Space is now at capacity and in order to deliver more activities for community benefit we want to look at reimaging underused spaces. This would include:

1) Redesigning the complex toilets and storage spaces to improve the quality of toilet facilities and create more functional community space.

2)Redesigning the open public spaces within the building providing a better flow and bringing the outdoors in. This would include design options to create a mixed library and café space and reimaging the outdoor patio space.

Our First Site Visit!

At the beginning of February, we had a chance to meet with Nathan, one of our collaborators, a head grower who takes care of the rooftop garden at The Landing. We discussed some of the primary ideas for the project and the possible output to achieve. It was a mind-opening site visit that inspired a creative design approach, utilising natural materials, repurposing waste from the Where The Light Gets In restaurant and engaging with the local community.

Nathan told us more about the activities they have on-site. These include workshops with school students, volunteer activities such as weaving locally sourced sheep wool to protect some of the plants in winter, and collaborations with artists and craftsmen.

The Shed is to provide the shelter where the workshops could be organised, providing the space to cook with the selfgrown ingredients and a communal table to gather and craft.

Our plan for the two weeks working with us includes a variety of exciting activities! We’ll start by welcoming you to the team and providing all the information you’ll need to get started. You'll meet our collaborator, and if all goes well, we may even arrange a site visit. Along the way, we’ll have group tutorials and creative sessions designed to foster collaboration and skill-building. Our goal is to create an engaging and informative environment that closely mirrors a real-world working experience.

In week one, we’ll focus on laying a solid foundation, setting us up to hit the ground running in week two. During this time, we’ll pay special attention to placemaking within a heritage setting and other key aspects of the project. In week two, we’ll dive into refining the final designs, visuals, and presentations to share with our collaborator. To wrap up, we’ll have a presentation and handover to potential collaborating architects, followed by a celebration to mark the success of our time together!

On December 4th, our team met with collaborators from Friends of Waterhouse Chapels, Peter Fleetwood and Nigel Roberts. We began with a brief introduction to the Waterhouse Chapels, outlining potential works, key stakeholders, and National Lottery funding.

We then discussed the project's significance and its potential impact on the community. From these conversations, we developed an initial concept strategy, positioning the chapels as a functional space that celebrates the works of Alfred Waterhouse.

To move forward, we arranged a site visit to further assess the space and explored the possibility of coordinating a meeting with Buttress to support their process and guide the following stages of our development.

Hi, I’m Rebecca.
I am from the UK
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Nottingham and am currently in my first year of the Master of Architecture course in the Continuity Atelier.

My interests include understanding and designing spaces for people and function and the old-fashioned way of doing things with a simple pen and paper, like drawing by hand and physical modelling.
Outside of architecture I love to travel to all over the world and experience fun activities and different cultures. I also like to read and write, and growing as many plants as possible on my windowsills and, much like my plants, I like to be outside in the warmth (preferably on holiday somewhere).

I am looking forward to working with Brick by Brick and Oswald Road Primary School because it offers the opportunity to inspire and teach younger children and will be a different experience than what is usually offered on projects at university, hopefully expanding and varying my skillset not only in the workplace but also in life. I am exited for the action weeks ahead!

Hi, I’m Yiyu Luo!

Course: MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse

I'm from Zhejiang, and I studied product design in the International Department of Wenzhou Business School, which seems to be completely different from my current major.

In my free time, I enjoy cycling and swimming, and occasionally go to some extreme sports as a challenge.

The reason I joined the Manchester Climate Coalition group was because I felt that climate conditions were essential for survival. What we're doing may not be big, but we're trying to improve the climate, and that's why I'm very interested in this group, doing my part.

Name: Taras Mandziuk
Course: MArch 1
Atelier: Infrastructure Space

I studied Architecture & Planning at the University of the West of England, graduating with both RIBA and RTPI accreditations, meaning I am qualified to work as both a Part I Architectural Assistant and an Urban Designer/Town Planner.

After graduating, I worked for 18 months as a Part I Architectural Assistant at BoonBrown; a medium sized practice in Somerset working in multiple sectors, including residential, retail, medical, and industrial projects.

My key interests are in community-centric architecture and urban regeneration projects. My work experience gave me an opportunity to develop professional skills within these interests on real-world projects, and now in my atelier at MSA, I am further developing my skills and interests.

I chose this MSA Live project as it is a great opportunity to actively engage in a scheme that will likely be built, and that will serve as a template for future development along Tyldesley High Street. I think my skills will be very useful to the group, and I believe that this project could potentially become a model for future urban regeneration schemes in other areas of decline.

Hi, I’m Lisa, I am a Master Architecture and adaptive reuse student. I studied at the University of Chester for my undergraduate in interior design. I have always had a passion for older and derelict buildings and thought A&AR was the perfect next step for my career to pursue in property development.

When I do get some spare time away from assignments, I take my two dogs for long walks exploring the countryside. I also love coming up with new ideas for interior design and experimenting in my house.

I chose Manchester Climate Alliance as it is a great opportunity to explore renewable energy for listed buildings.

Hi everyone, my name is Chung Hei Mok, but feel free to call me Henry to make things easier. I am originally from Hong Kong and completed my bachelor degree at Newcastle University. After a few years of Part 1 placement in the UK and Hong Kong, I am in my first year of the MArch programme, currently working in the ''Non-Standard Habitats'' atelier.

The relationship between architecture and humans has always intrigued me. No matter how well the setting suits the users' needs or how the aesthetic language appeals to our senses, a great design is always created by a thoughtful mind behind it. For me, exploring the story behind each project, what it is and how it came to be, is at the heart of my architectural interest. Outside of architecture, I am a huge football and photography fan.

In ''Brick by Brick'', I am excited not only to teach the kids about architecture, but also to see how their creativity can inspire me to rethink how architecture can be interpreted from this bilateral relationship. I hope this experience sparks new ideas and offers a playful exchange of thoughts. I am sure it will be a fun and inspiring event!

Firstly, some background!

The Ince Cemetery Chapels are a slice of local history right in the heart of Ince. Built in the mid-1800s, these chapels were created by the Ince Burial Board, which was set up after the Burial Act of 1852 to improve burial practices and sanitation in the area. The land for the cemetery was purchased from John Walmesley, part of the Ince Hall Estate, and the site was split according to the town's religious makeup—two-thirds for Protestants and one-third for Catholics and Dissenters. The chapels were designed by the famous architect Alfred Waterhouse, known for his Victorian Gothic style, and completed in 1857. As Ince grew and more churches popped up, the chapels saw less use. Today, the cemetery and chapels are cared for by Wigan Council, standing as a fascinating reminder of the town's history and how it transformed during the industrial revolution.

Hi, I’m Aysha!
I was born and raised in India, where I completed my undergraduate studies. After working for two years, I am currently doing my masters in MArch, CPU(Ai) atelier

Nature has always been at the heart of my design approach—I could spend hours just watching the sky! I believe nature has so much to teach us, and I love exploring how it can shape architecture. At the same time, I’m keen on blending these ideas with technology to create practical, future-ready designs.

What excites me most about The Oswald Old primary school project is interaction with children! I once taught a class of primary kids on Teachers' Day back home, and those three hours were both the most challenging and the most fun. Kids see the world so differently, purely through nature and their surroundings. And I think I’ll learn just as much from them as they will from me. Plus, spending two days making them more aware of their everyday spaces sounds like an amazing, joy-filled experience!

RICHARD SALGE

I’m a MArch 1 student at CPU Ai. Having completed my undergraduate studies in in Germany, I spent a year in practice in London working in a global practice. This experience gave me valuable insights into both large-scale and smaller projects, shaping my approach to architecture and design. I’m particularly interested in computational design and incorporating new tools, like Grasshopper. Outside of architecture, I enjoy playing tennis, watching Formula 1 and football, and traveling to discover new cultures and places.

Hello, my name is Emanuil.

My journey in architecture began in Denver, CO, where I was captivated by the endless possibilities the field offered.

After earning my Bachelor of Science in Architecture from UC Denver, I embarked on an 18-month journey in Paris. This period was fundamental as I had the privilege to work with two distinguished architecture firms. Each firm had a distinct architectural philosophy. I honed my skills on a broad spectrum of projects, from residential communal dwellings to large sports centre arenas, and everything in between, including refurbishment projects in the heart of Paris, France.

At MSA, I found myself drawn to the NSH atelier through its unique approach to originating non-standard forums that architecture can inscribe through material exploration, unconventional sites and aspiring future sustainable notions.

I am eager to share my enthusiasm with fellow students and professionals and embark on exciting projects within the field of architecture.

Hi, I'm Ariana, and I'm from Peru. I moved to the UK four years ago to complete my undergraduate degree in architecture at MSA. After graduating, I moved to London, where I worked as a Part 1 architectural assistant and absolutely loved the experience.

After a year in practice, I decided to return to MSA for my master's, choosing CPU as my atelier for this year. It has been an incredible experience, surrounded by inspiring people and an environment that constantly enriches my knowledge.

My passion for architecture began in childhood, as I was always fascinated by construction sites and the development of different projects up close with my family. I’m excited to continue on this path, refining my skills and applying them to future projects around the world.

"Exciting First Site Visit!"

It was wonderful to connect with individuals from Stockport Council, the Resilient Cities Network, Planit, and Shedkm. Our goal was to understand what this project could mean for the community while exploring ideas on how we can foster greater collaboration.
Posted 10 Mar 2025 15:42
Over the two weeks our main aim, alongside our ambitions, is to have fun and learn new skills.
We will not only visit the site and meet our collaborator, but we'll engage with the local community at a consultation event held at What If?'s community hub during the first week.
We're also hoping to visit a similar, highly successful, project in the heart of Manchester (more details to be confirmed) and see if we can apply any of this in Stockport.
We'll be analysing and critiquing existing proposals for the regeneration of the area and counter-mapping.
We'll be quickly getting to know the local, making sure that our final vision is ambitious, exciting, but most importantly hyper-local and for the community in which we are working.
At the end of the action weeks we'll have worked collaboratively to produce a vision for site and wider area. This will involve designing, debating, researching and ambitious thinking.

THE COLLABORATOR

What if? is a fast moving and grass roots urban consultancy firm. Their interest lye in taking in disused council buildings on the basis of generating ideas about how to repurpose them into social and democratic hot spots that give back into their communities. With a people first approach they stand as socially motivative outliers in a field that is rapidly developing into a profit centred industry. Above all else, they always stand to ask the question, What if?

Hey, I'm Xu Tianxiang (he/they)

I'm an MA student specializing in Adaptive Reuse, driven by its potential to merge sustainability with creative transformations of existing structures. My BArch from the University of Architecture focused on Environmental Design (Interior), where I cultivated a passion for adaptive strategies in historic spaces.

Before the MArch program, I co-led a church renovation project, tackling challenges like preserving heritage while integrating modern interior solutions that comply with regulations. This experience honed my ability to balance historical value with functional innovation.

What excites me most about adaptive reuse is its dual power to reduce environmental waste and preserve cultural narratives. I believe this approach can create architecture that actively benefits both communities and ecosystems.

My key skills include collaborating with diverse stakeholders, conducting deep research to inform design choices, and adapting ideas across disciplines. I’m particularly eager to explore circular design techniques in our projects.

Thrilled to join this group – ready to contribute my expertise and learn from all of you as we build meaningful solutions together!

Hi I'm Akeefah ! (She/ Her)

I am in the & Architecture Atelier and studied my undergraduate degree here at MSA. The atelier & focus on creating common spaces, spaces which are inclusive and encourage diversity. I’ve always enjoyed designing socially cohesive and resilient spaces.

I did my Part 1 at AEW Architects, and I enjoyed it because it was very people driven. I got to experience alternative ways to use CAD and Revit and worked in the retail team. I was involved in many projects at different scales, ranging from commercial office spaces to small refurbishment projects.

Why What if? ... Because it provides a realistic insight into designing feasible spaces that can also increase community cohesion.

Unique Skill – I love communicating and presenting, because you get to express ideas and experiment with software like InDesign etc. I also found that I love talking which helps too!

Hey there, I’m Alexia!

Course: MArch 1
Atelier: CPU

I’m from Romania, but I have been living in Manchester for the past 5 years. I have done my undergraduate at MSA and decided to do my postgraduate course here as well. When I am not working on my next assignment, I'm either dancing and playing volleyball.

During my year in practice, I have worked at FDG, a company that specialises on laboratories and research facilities. I prefer working in Revit, with a bit of Rhino and Grasshopper on the side, but InDesign and Photoshop relax me.

I chose Manchester Climate Alliance because of the opportunity it offers to research some renewable energy sources. I was also attracted to the idea of working on a project for the Victoria Baths since I've seen its interior on so many films and TV series.

Hi, I'm Chennan. (He/Him)

I’m currently in MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse. I studied my undergraduate degree here at MSA.

I have two work experiences, one as an intern in an interior design company working on residential design projects and one as the personal assistant to the general manager of a green technology company.

I chose to be a part of ‘What if’ because joining this group will allow me to have the opportunity to work with a diverse team to contribute to sustainable development and social well-being.

Unique Skill: I will be able to focus on environmentally friendly design solutions suitable for human use.

Hi everyone, I'm Max.
I’m currently in my first year of March and in the Continuity Atelier. Before this, I completed my BArch at the University of Newcastle. After that, I spent a year on placement in South Africa, where I worked on several large-scale office-to-residential retrofits and urban regeneration masterplans. Following my time there, I spent another year in London working with the firm Howells (formerly Glenn Howells), an AJ100 firm, where I focused on large-scale residential schemes and masterplans both in the UK and across Europe.

My group, Group 13, is working with the Company What if? They are led by a very dynamic and engaging team that have already introduced the MArch Students to a variety of Architects, Landscape Architects, Council delegates, Town Planners and Historians around Stockport who we can continue to work with throughout this project. The brief Is currently very open, but looking at structuring a program for sustainable retro fit to produce community centred buildings is something I’m really interested in and something I think could really standout in a interview portfolio.

A skill I bring to the team is that “I don’t deal in if buts or maybe’s, I deal in absolutes” equally to further this, when working on this project “I want everyone to go out there, enjoy it, but be fucking disciplined with it”. Channelling my ideologies into my digital workflow and team communications is crucial in allowing myself to add moderate, up to significant levels of additional value to any group work dynamic.

Hey, I’m Alex (he/they)

I’m a MArch 1 student in Continuity, an atelier I was drawn to due to its highly pragmatic, grounded and contextual approach to Architecture. I did my BArch at the University of Nottingham, where I particularly focused on inclusive education and housing, as well as adaptive design.

I did my Part 1 at WW+P Architects (formerly Weston Williamson), and continue to work there part time whilst I complete my degree. My work there on the Residential Mixed-Use team is predominantly focused on social housing and civic buildings, and I also get involved with education programmes like Open City’s Accelerate.

What If? particularly appealed to me as I have learnt the value of community is so important, particularly whilst working on social housing projects. What If? Is an exciting proposal to reuse a historically valuable local building and give it community value. It also ties into a bigger vision for the redevelopment of the region, promoting resilience for the existing and future communities.

A skill I bring to the team is my ability to quickly adapt to new situations and challenges, allowing me to get stuck into a short project, like in the upcoming Action Weeks.

Hi there, I’m Roy!

Course: MArch 1
Atelier:Some kind of Nature

I am from China and completed my undergraduate RIBA I studies at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. I have worked at Daniel Stisen Studio in Shanghai and Cocoon Studio in Suzhou. In my practice, I focus on the adaptive reuse and renovation of old buildings, as well as the research and exploration of the locality of architectural culture.

I chose to join the Manchester Climate Alliance because I believe that the climate is critical to the future of each and every one of us. Creating environmentally friendly design solutions that also bring value and meaning to each member of the surrounding community is as important as architecture's role in creating better spaces. Spaces that not only bring about positive change for humans, but also for the other species that share this planet.

I am also very interested in the morphology and structure of buildings. For more information about me,welcome visit my Instagram account: Roy.Wang7
